In a heated conversation on Monday’s First Take, Monica McNutt and Stephen A. Smith discussed how the WNBA has been covered by the media. Before long, the media’s general coverage of the sport had shifted. She continued, “It all started from the national championship game, and I’ve been dealing with this for two years now, and understand that, yeah, negative things have probably been said about me. But honestly, I’ll take that because look where women’s basketball is.” The 22-year-old Reese claimed that more and more individuals “you never would think would be talking about women’s basketball” are becoming aware of the league.

Angel Reese explains that it isn’t just a singular individual driving the popularity the WNBA is receiving “People are pulling up to games. We’ve got celebrities coming to games [and] sold-out arenas just because of one single game,” she said. Rapper Latto notably showed up to support Angel Reese, and she received love from Megan Thee Stallion. The forward declared that if it means the WNBA will keep expanding, she is willing to take on the role of the villain. Overall, Angel Reese wants to make it clear that the players before her and her rookie class are the reason the WNBA is having a moment. While Clark is a big reason, she isn’t the sole reason.

Yesterday, ESPN basketball analyst Monica McNutt called out Stephen A. Smith during First Take while debating the WNBA. Monday’s First Take included a contentious conversation between Shannon Sharpe, Monica McNutt, and Stephen A. Smith over the hard foul on Caitlin Clark. McNutt criticized Stephen A. in her closing remarks for waiting until this year to bring up the WNBA. Stephen A. Smith was left stunned and clearly outdone by Monica’s fair criticism. She responded to Smith saying, , “Stephen A., respectfully, with your platform, you could have been doing this three years ago if you wanted to.”

Pat McAfee has now thrown his hat into the defense team for Caitlin Clark in a wild rant on his ESPN show. It was inevitable that Pat McAfee would talk about the incident on his TV program as soon as it was revealed that he was there at Saturday’s Indiana Fever vs. Chicago Sky game, which saw Sky player Chennedy Carter push Fever guard Caitlin Clark to the ground. McAfee attacked unidentified WNBA players and the media, defending Clark’s status as the lone superstar in the rookie class for about ten minutes. He used the terms “cash cow” and “one white b—- who is a superstar” to emphasize his points.

McAfee began the show by talking about how Clark has been the target of a lot of trash talk from players on other teams. He had a message for the sports media and former WNBA players. “There seems to be this notion that this whole evolution of success and popularity in the WNBA is because of this entire rookie class. I think there’s a chance Chennedy Carter thinks [Sky rookie forward] Angel Reese deserves all this credit. The media talks about how it’s the entire class,” McAfee said. He says that there is only one person in the rookie class who matters, and that is Caitlin Clark. He then went off the handle.

The unexpected statement from McAfee came just as he was about to conclude the program, though. He said, “I would like the media people that continue to say, ‘This rookie class, this rookie class, this rookie class’. Nah, just call it for what it is — there’s one white b—- for the Indiana team who is a superstar.” using that language crosses a very hard line. It doesn’t matter if it’s a compliment or meant as a positive, it is disrespectful. Fans have been going at Pat McAffee since he made the shocking statements. WNBA referees and anonymous critics were the targets of McAfee’s subsequent tirades.

The WNBA is a majority-black league, but there have been white superstars plenty in the WNBA both past and present. The Caitlin Clark situation has created a discourse chamber that benefits form people who don’t really care about women’s basketball getting riled up about Clark. Some of the coverage has gotten out of hand with personalities like Stephen A. Smith and Shannon Sharpe now speaking as authorities on a sport they have not shown an interest in until this season. ESPN basketball analyst Monica McNutt called out Stephen A. Smith during First Take while debating the WNBA.

This past weekend, after Clark’s Fever narrowly defeated Angel Reese and the Chicago Sky, things reached a fever pitch. Before the game, Clark had expressed that she thought she was being “hammered” and wasn’t receiving the calls she deserved. However, late in the third quarter, Sky guard Chennedy Carter, who was waiting for an inbound pass, slammed her down from behind. The foul caused the Caitlin Clark discourse to get even worse. Drake Shows Support For Toronto’s WNBA Expansion Team In First Public Appearance After Kendrick Lamar Beef

Toronto will officially be home to its very own WNBA team soon. Yesterday, the WNBA announced that Toronto will host the newest WNBA expansion team, and Toronto’s biggest star, Drake, popped up to show support. A women’s professional basketball franchise has been awarded to Kilmer Sports Ventures bid. At a press conference held Thursday morning at a downtown Toronto hotel, Drake, Ontario Premier Doug Ford, Scottie Barnes of the Toronto Raptors, and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau were all present for the formal announcement. Furthermore, it is notably Drake’s first public appearance after the Kendrick Lamar feud.

The club hasn’t been named yet and will play home games at the 8,700-seat Coca-Cola Coliseum, located at Exhibition Place in downtown Toronto. They will occasionally be able to move up to the Scotiabank Arena. The WNBA also recently announced another expansion team that is headed to the Bay Area, the Golden State Valkyries. The newest Toronto squad, the first in the league to play outside of the US, will take the court in 2026. Drake is a big NBA fan and is regularly seen courtside at Toronto Raptors games. The WNBA continues to grow in popularity. With a strong crop rookies who are porving to be budding stars, and established allstar level players dominating the lague, the WNBA is in a great place.
