Logic Says He Recorded ‘Vinyl Days’ In 12 Days In Order To Fulfill His Deal With Def Jam

Logic‘s latest album, Vinyl Days, marks the end of an eight-year journey with Def Jam. In a recent episode of Logan Paul’s Impaulsive podcast, the rapper detailed the creative process behind the album. Most notably, he shared that the album was recorded in less than two weeks.

“I made that album in 12 days so I could get off Def Jam,” he revealed. “That’s my favorite part — I’m off Def Jam. I made that album so I could leave, and guess what? I left them with some of the dopest sh*t I could give them. It’s not like I just wiped my ass. What am I excited about? I’m excited to be independent, I’m excited to do my thing.”

As a newly independent artist, Logic is looking forward to making music without having to deal with any of the politics of a major label. Although it seems he couldn’t wait to put Def Jam behind him, Logic insists that there is no bad between him and the iconic hip-hop label.

“I’m really happy to know that I represented and low-key was the face of the label — one of the illest hip-hop labels of all time — and that I sold millions and millions of records and gave them billions and billions of streams,” he said, “and that it was a good partnership. And I couldn’t be happier to get the f*ck out.”

Logic Denies Having Beef With TDE Rapper Reason: ‘If I Was Going To Diss You, I’d Diss You’

For such an ostensibly nice guy, Logic sure does find himself embroiled in lots of beef speculation. The latest rumor circulating online involves TDE rapper Reason, who some fans believe Logic dissed on his new album, Vinyl Days. On the album’s title track, Logic raps, “Come on, homie, listen to the voice of reason / Yeah, you talk a lot of sh*t but don’t want the beef like a vegan.” This led podcaster Rory of the New Rory & Mal show to relay that the Del Amo rapper believed such lyrics were shots at him to Logic.

However, being the nice guy he is, Logic wanted to clear the air as soon as he was informed of the alleged misperception. “Hey bro @reasonTDE my boy @thisisrory said you thought I dissed you on my song Vinyl Days,” he tweeted. “If I was going to diss you, I’d diss you. I love you, you’re my brother. Let’s get ice cream together some time.”

Incidentally, Reason seemingly did diss Logic on his 2020 single “The Soul (Pt. 2),” rhyming:

N****s pronounce my name wrong, tell me that I ain’t did much
See y’all mistake my name for Logic’s, y’all got me f*cked up
How you compare a n**** that take from the culture
Versus a n**** that’s for it? This sh*t gettin’ borin’

However, in an interview with HipHopDX shortly after the song’s release, he denied that it was intended as a diss. ” I didn’t think that it was going to be perceived that way,” he explained. “If I thought it would, honestly, I wouldn’t have done it because I’m not into taking shots just to take shots at a n****. That’s not me. It’s just small wordplay, and reasoning is close to logic. That’s really as deep as I thought about it. It’s really just a lesson learned that we’re in a different day and age, and rap is different. It’s a little bit more sensitive.”

Meanwhile, Logic has seen friction with peers like Joyner Lucas, Joe Budden, and Freddie Gibbs over the years. Maybe Reason’s right; you’re damned if you and damned if you don’t in hip-hop these days. If regular wordplay can be taken as a diss, it’s no wonder Logic wanted to quit to play video games.

Logic And Wiz Khalifa Arrive To Show Off Their Skills On The Intricate ‘Breath Control’

You might be wondering how much of an album Logic has left with all the singles he’s released ahead of Vinyl Days. Well, as we found out earlier this week, he’s going to have plenty of it leftover. That’s because Vinyl Days will deliver 30 tracks to the ears of listeners when it arrives on June 17. Ahead of its drop, Logic has released “Bleed It,” “Orville,” “Therapy Music,” “Tetris,” “Decades,” and “Vinyl Days.” Now, Logic ups the total of pre-release singles to seven with the arrival of “Breath Control” alongside Wiz Khalifa.

The track arrives with the nostalgic feel that is present in the aforementioned singles. Wiz Khalifa arrives with his trademark laid-back flow for a lengthy verse that serves as the ideal introduction for Logic as he checks in with a double-time flow that perfectly explains why he named the song “Breath Control.”

Logic and Wiz Khalifa’s new song arrives days after the rappers announced their Vinyl Verse summer tour. The duo will hit the road starting July 27 in Irvine, California, and continue things for a little over a month before bringing things to an end on September 2 in St. Louis, Missouri.

It looks like Logic is going to have plenty of new material to perform on his upcoming Vinyl Verse Tour with Wiz Khalifa. In addition to the previously released singles “Therapy Music,” “Orville,” and “Bleed It,” his upcoming album Vinyl Days will host a whopping 30 tracks, closing out his time at Def Jam with one hell of a bang. Seriously, we know albums have been trending longer for the sake of streaming algorithms, but this is either ridiculous or impressive — depending on your opinion of the Maryland rapper.

Among the guests featured on the album are rap legends, contemporary stars, and underground stalwarts, making it one of the most well-rounded representations of the music business today. Action Bronson, AZ, Blu & Exile, Curren$y, DJ Premier, The Game, Langston Bristol, Nezi Momodu, Royce Da 5’9, Russ, RZA, and Wiz Khalifa all make appearances, along with Bobby Boy Records signees iamJMARS, Big Lenbo, and C Dot Castro.

Vinyl Days will be Logic’s seventh album and his first since announcing his “retirement” in 2020 — a retirement he rescinded months just months later with a string of collab tracks alongside Madlib, the single “Vaccine,” and possibly a mixtape as Doctor Destruction, who fans believe was just a barely disguised Logic all along.

Logic Lets The Ink Spill In His New Song ‘Bleed It’

It’s been a very active year for Logic, and he is here today with his sixth song of 2022 “Bleed It.” Over the 90s reminiscent production with midtempo drums and a vintage vocal filter, he raps in the chorus about letting his pen bleed. He raps with enthusiasm and confidence but also reflects on the days that may not have been the case, referencing how he was once a “loser,” “failure,” or “never was a winner but he won some.” After the internet backlash Logic has faced over the years despite being an advocate for mental health, he refreshed as he has his mind set on not dwelling too much on the naysayers.

“Bleed It” comes just one week after the record “Orville” featuring Like, Blu and Exile. Prior to “Orville” the 32-year-old released “Therapy Music” featuring Russ, “Tetris,” “Decades” and the DJ Premier-assisted title track for his forthcoming album Vinyl Days. Since Logic’s almost yearlong retirement in 2020, which he began to focus on being a father, the Rockville rapper has put out the 2021 mixtape Bobby Tarantino III and three songs alongside Madlib under their duo moniker MadGic.

Logic Shares The Release Date For His Seventh Album, ‘Vinyl Days’

Ahead of his upcoming Vinyl Verse Tour with Wiz Khalifa, Logic will drop his seventh studio album, Vinyl Days next month. The album follows Logic’s January announcement of him coming out of his rap retirement.

Earlier this year, Logic teased the tracks “Breath Control,” along with Vinyl Days‘ title track. This month, he released “Therapy Music,” which features Russ. On “Therapy Music,” Logic raps, “I keep my ego in check, just me and this instrumental pumpin’ through this cassette deck / Money don’t represent my rank / Yeah, Logic rose from jack but even the Titanic sank / I seen cats with egos bigger than cruise ships lose it / Gain power and abuse it.”

Last month, he dropped a double single, comprised of the tracks “Tetris” and “Decades.” This came after a public dispute with Def Jam, who originally planned to release them as two standalone singles. “What the f*ck is going on, man? I told Def Jam that I wanted to release my sh*t as a two-pack,” Logic said in an Instagram video, “and I just found out that they’re releasing it as two singles at the same time. What kind of sh*t is that?… I care about my fans, man. I care about hip-hop. I care about music.”

Fortunately, it seems Logic got his way after all.

Logic Announces That He’s Working On A New Album Called ‘Vinyl Days’

Logic’s last album arrived in 2020 with No Pressure, a project that was billed as his last album after he announced his plans to retire from hip-hop. That retirement was quite short as Logic returned with new music the following year. Over the course of 2021, he released a collection of singles like “Tired In Malibu,” “No Vaccine,” and “My Way.” He also released three songs with Madlib as the rapper-producer duo MadGic. With that being said, it was safe to say that Logic is back in action, and for his first move in 2022, the rapper returned with an announcement for those hoping for more music this year.

In a post to Instagram, Logic shared what he’s been working on so far this year. “I’m working on a new album called Vinyl Days,” he captioned the video. The post itself captures Logic working on a beat. “This is JAY-Z‘s microphone,” he says to start the video as he removes the microphone from its case. “No I.D. gave it to me.” Logic then begins recording sound effects with his mouth before adding them to a beat as it plays. His longtime producer 6ix also joins him in the video.

Logic also shared a snippet of the title track from “Vinyl Days” in a later post. “From dawn to dusk,” Logic raps to begin the snippet. “Hit the homie Mac Demarco like, ‘What up, my man?’/ I need some raw sh*t.” It remains to be seen when Logic will release Vinyl Days, but based on the snippet, the project seems to hold a sound that’s similar to his early Young Sinatra mixtapes.
