Projexx Revs Up His New Single ‘Top Speed’ In A Charismatic ‘UPROXX Sessions’ Performance

Projexx and Uproxx — a perfect combination. The Jamaican genrebender dropped by Uproxx Studios to perform his new song “Top Speed.” On the original song, the slinky Caribbean beat blends with Giggs‘ grime-grounded flow for a distinctive distillation of diasporic sounds. Here, although Giggs and Marksman don’t appear during Projexx’s performance, the Kingston native’s natural charisma carries the track anyway, breaking it down to its most essential elements.

“Top Speed” appears on Projexx’s newest project, Grim Tape, Vol. II, which dropped July 7 through R&R Digital, Big Wave, and Warner. In an interview with Broadway World, Projexx said, “I wanted to produce something different and unusual, so I was in the studio experimenting with Nate and Tyree when they came up with the beat. I was freestyling until I found the first line ‘Bimma inna top speed.’”

The song’s perfectly timed to take advantage of a burgeoning wave within British music scenes like drill and grime that has begun to tap back into African and Jamaican roots for a unique blend of rapping over more tropical production. Examples include J Hus’ Beautiful And Brutal Yard and Burna Boy’s new music.

Forest Claudette’s Wistful ‘Mess Around’ Performance For ‘UPROXX Sessions’ Shines

A new voice in R&B has entered the scene. Forest Claudette hails from Melbourne, Australia, and is generating big buzz around his newly released debut EP, Everything Was Green. Deftly combining elements of R&B, pop, and alternative, he’s perfectly positioned to capture an audience raised on the Pollen playlist with tracks like “Violence” and “Mess Around.”

The 23-year-old singer dropped by the Uproxx Studio to perform the latter for UPROXX Sessions, crooning his way through the wistful ballad in a fittingly emerald ensemble. While the studio version from his EP features Atlanta funk-rappers Earthgang, he’s just as able and engaging singing solo here. The Aussie singer bears every hallmark of a Gen-Z star — and he certainly shines in this performance.

Flight Aims To Break ‘The Scale’ In His Smooth ‘UPROXX Sessions’ Performance

The social star-to-recording artist pipeline remains intact and any number of familiar faces from our favorite Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube accounts continue to make the leap — including today’s UPROXX Sessions performer, Flight. Known as FlightReacts on YouTube, he’s mainly known for reactions to basketball highlights, but he’s also got a growing catalog of self-produced albums and songs on streaming platforms, which includes his late-December offering “The Scale,” which features Detroit punchline merchant Babytron.

Sans his guest star, Flight dropped by UPROXX Studios to deliver a fluid performance of the new(ish) song. A boastful track that sees the Florida native Los Angeles transplant detailing his big plans for the future, “The Scale” is a straightforward introduction to the world of FlightReacts. Consistency is key; as long Flight keeps dropping new music, we’ll be well on his way to being where DDG is in no time.

West Coast Rising Star Jayson Cash Brings ‘Some More Of It’ To ‘UPROXX Sessions’

Del Amo’s own Jayson Cash pulls up on UPROXX Sessions for a laid-back performance of his song “Some More Of It.” With a voice and flow like a cross between DJ Quik and Ab-Soul, Cash steps to the mic with enough West Coast swagger to launch a fleet of lowriders down Crenshaw Blvd. “Let me put some Jayson in it,” he boasts. Well, go on, then.

Cash’s buzz has grown over the past year since releasing his major-label debut project, Read The Room, which contained features from LA staples like Blxst and Dom Kennedy and fellow rising star Kalan.FrFr. There are big things on the horizon for the South LA native, so he’s worth keeping an ear to the street for.

Dirtybutt Delivers A Defiant Peformance Of The Militant ‘March’ For ‘UPROXX Sessions’

With a name like Dirtybutt, you might expect today’s UPROXX Sessions performance to run more comedic than militant. But when he starts performing his defiant song “March,” it’s clear that the Charlotte native has some serious concerns on his mind. Borrowing the “I Don’t Know, But I’ve Been Told” military drill, he addresses police violence and government overreaches over a buzzing, churning beat that underlines Dirtybutt’s thrash-rap roots.

The punk-rap artist should be familiar to fans of past UPROXX Sessions performer Nascar Aloe, with whom he’s been touring all this month. His influences, which extend to similar genre mashers like Trippie Redd, XXXTentacion, and ZillaKami, are pretty clear; while it may seem that provocation is his primary goal, his underlying motivations suggest that there’s more to this artist than his off-putting stage name.

‘UPROXX Sessions’ Welcomes MyGuyMars (And His Band) With A Groovy Performance Of ‘U Know Wassup/Only You’

1500 Or Nothin’s MyGuyMars steps up to the mic with a groovy medley performance of “U Know Wassup/Only You” for UPROXX Sessions. In a departure from many of the one-take performances we’ve hosted, Mars brings a full band, including bass, guitars, and DJ, and plays keys himself as he sings the upbeat West Coast two-stepper “U Know Wassup,” then slows things down for a cover of “Only You” by 112. I dare you not to dance — and I bet you will.

For those unfamiliar, 1500 Or Nothin‘ is a collective of artists, musicians, and producers based in the Los Angeles area who has worked with just about everybody who’s anybody in hip-hop today, from local legends like Kendrick Lamar, Roddy Ricch, Nipsey Hussle, Snoop Dogg, and The Game to pillars of hip-hop like Beyoncé, Frank Ocean, Jay-Z, Just Blaze, Rihanna, and Usher.

Mars is one of the core members of the collective alongside Rance, James Fauntleroy, and Brody Brown, and has been performing under the 1500 banner since his high school days. His credits include The Dirty Projectors and T.I., while he has released numerous solo projects, including February’s No Days Off 2, which is where you can find “U Know Wassup.”

Zacari Pines For A Past Paramour In His Poised ‘Touch Of God’ Performance For ‘UPROXX Sessions’

Top Dawg Entertainment crooner Zacari had a pretty productive 2022, contributing to “Do Better” and “Motions” from labelmate Ab-Soul’s album in addition to dropping his own new single, “Restless,” toward the end of the year. He followed that up with the release of the moody “Touch Of God” in May, and this week, he stops by Uproxx Studios to deliver a poised performance of the haunting single for UPROXX Sessions. “Your love to me is the touch of God,” he sings over the cavernous beat, reflecting on a love who moved on and left him longing for meaning.

Fans have been speculating about a potential new Zacari album since last July, when he released the video for “Bliss” featuring Isaiah Rashad, and while he hasn’t made any official announcements yet, with “Restless” and “Touch Of God” coming just six months apart (which is impressive for an indie artist such as Zacari, especially considering TDE’s patient — and sometimes chaotic — rollout schedules), there’s a good chance he’s got the follow-up to 2019’s Run Wild Run Free cooking. And given that last year saw plenty of TDE’s roster get long-awaited releases, clearing the future schedule for mainstays like Schoolboy Q and newbies like Ray Vaughn and Reason, there’s plenty of reason to hope some new Zacari music is on the way as well.

Sexyy Red Brings Her Raunchy Hit ‘Pound Town’ To ‘UPROXX Sessions’

Sexyy Red is a fast-rising name in hip-hop thanks to her raunchy hit “Pound Town” and today, she brings an unapologetic performance of her breakthrough single to UPROXX Sessions. Earlier this week, she explained the rules of “Pound Town” with Uproxx’s Cherise Johnson, and now, she shows why the sexually explicit hit is currently racking up the streams despite (or perhaps because of) its provocative content.

So, what are the rules of “Pound Town?” According to Sexyy Red, condoms are a must, the tongue has to get involved, “leave your morals at the door,” and there’s no nuttin’ allowed. And make sure you wash first because no one wants to deal with the smells before things get wild.

Thanks to the viral interest in “Pound Town” and another racy hit, “Born By The River,” the St. Louis native was able to secure some high-profile co-signers ahead of the release of her new mixtape Hood Hottest Princess. She’s joined on the tape by both Juicy J and Nicki Minaj, who appears on the remix of “Pound Town.” The mixtape is out now.

OMB Peezy Doesn’t ‘Think You Ready’ For His Defiant ‘UPROXX Sessions’ Performance

From Alabama to the Bay Area, Sick Wid It rapper OMB Peezy has been making a name for himself for the past few years thanks to impressive releases such as Preacher To The Streets, Too Deep For Tears, and Misguided. Now, with his new album, Le’Paris (taken from his real first name), coming soon, Peezy drops by Uproxx Studios to deliver a defiant performance of his new single “Think You Ready.”

Produced by Quay Global, the new track finds Peezy questioning and challenging the listener at the same time with its dismissive refrain as he details the struggles he’s survived and the big plans he’s got for the future. “Look, if you think you ready, it get deadly,” he warns. “We be marching up on feet / R.I.P. Tez, survived the headshot ‘fore he took ’em off the street / You think you ready ’til them boys walk up and blind you with a beam / I been heavy all my life, they wanna drop me ’cause I’m me.” He also briefly addresses his legal troubles while asserting they are no problem, just another hurdle for him to jump on his road to success.

Damon Elbert Takes His ‘UPROXX Sessions’ Performance To ‘New Levels’

Rising Seattle artist Damn Elbert wants to reach “New Levels,” and displays the potential to do just that with a new performance of his song for UPROXX Sessions. Blending the sounds of hip-hop and R&B with a pop sensibility, Elbert aims to make a name for himself with the help of Drakeo The Ruler‘s Stinc Team.

Elbert has appeared on a number of the LA-based group’s releases, including Drakeo’s final pre-humous album, The Truth Hurts and RalfyThePlug‘s 2022 project iHeartRalphy. With a moody crooning style, Elbert’s music bridges the gap between traditional pop songwriting and melodic hip-hop, giving the indie artist a toehold in each world.

In April, he released the third entry in his Love On The Line album series, following up in May with the single “Magic.”
