Carmelo Anthony Shows Off New Colorway For Tiffany & Co. Air Force 1s

Carmelo Anthony just showed off a new colorway for the Tiffany & Co. Air Force 1 collab. Moreover, the NBA star gave fans a whole unboxing video and everything, revealing some of the shoe’s packaging details. In fact, a lot of people were gassing up the orange box and turquoise bag and interior color more than the sneaker itself. For those curious, the shoe has a white midsole, paired well with the teal body, and black laces and eyestays. However, some fans likely remember the shoe’s previous iteration, whose original design left fans disappointed.

What’s more is that many picked up on the redesign on social media, such as Instagram posts covering Anthony’s video. “It look like they be on ig doing their research cuz they was gone release them black ones. Til we flamed them sh*ts,” one commenter wrote on Instagram. Furthermore, the original design went for more of a classic all-black design with a Tiffany Blue swoosh. Moreover, this newest edition that the Lakers player showed off is the “Family and Friends” edition. Overall, many believe that this rendition of the Tiffany & Co. Air Force 1s takes a bolder approach than its original.

Carmelo Anthony Flexes New Colorway For Tiffany Air Force 1s

For those interested in copping a pair, unfortunately these won’t go on sale for the public. The original design will go on sale March 7th on the SNKRS app and select Tiffany locations. Also, they’ll cost you $400 USD. Of course, Melo doesn’t have to worry about price points or missing out on exclusive drops. Still, most conversation around him in the headlines these days surrounds his divorce from La La Anthony. While both seem to be in good spirits and moving on with their lives, reflections on the media scandal that surrounded them still resonate. For example, La La recently told Jason Lee about handling coverage of Carmelo’s alleged twins out of wedlock.

“I know I’ve said ‘thank you’ before but I want to thank you again,” she told Lee about when he fixed mistakes or misleading angles in his coverage. “Anyone in this room will say I’ve told that story to everyone that works with me. What stood out about you to me is that that was a very traumatic experience in my life, a very traumatic experience to my son. Hearing things, whether true or not true. And to be able to have made that call, and you respected what I said and understood that. I’m a mom to a teenager that has to see those things. I always appreciated and respected that.” Regardless of these developments, let us know what you think of the new Tiffany Air Force 1 colorway down below. Tiffany & Co x Nike, ‘A Legendary Pair’

YHQEP6GR2FE6TBWOKFB5GJ3UIY

On Sunday, Tiffany & Co. and Nike officially announced their collaboration on the  Nike x Tiffany & Co. Air Force 1 1837s. The shoe is being produced in honor of the 40th anniversary of Nike’s Air Force 1 and was teased over the weekend in a New York Times print ad of a Nike shoe box in Tiffany’s signature robin egg blue. The ad read  “A Legendary Pair.” Shortly after this announcement, the sneaker collab made its way to social media platforms where that “legendary” sentiment is quite hard to find.

By Tuesday, sneakerheads and social media users largely dismissed the $400 Nike Air Force 1 Low Tiffany & Co. 1837 shoes– proclaiming them as a huge missed opportunity. The shoe is essentially an all black Air Force 1, already deemed a persona non grata of the shoe world, with a Tiffany blue swoosh and silver plated back.

Commentary now began to flood comment sections across Twitter and Instagram. Users intervened stating: “They’re not bad if you don’t look at them,” “Is this a joke,” “Just Don’t Do It,” “You are a luxury brand, this looks so cheap” and “The design team was high for this one.” On other pages of youth culture such as Highsnobiety, Hypebeast and on popular archive account @liljupiter, people were even less inhibited.

American rapper Reese LaFlare deemed the entire collaboration “T R A S H,” going on to state that “Nick Diamonds did it better,” in reference to the Diamond & Co. founder who in 2005 collaborated with Nike Skateboarding on what was later dubbed the “Tiffany Dunk.” That sneaker currently fetches over $3,000 on sneaker reseller StockX and remains highly acclaimed.

Just a short time after the initial announcement of the shoe, the internet made up its mind. The collaboration, cool in theory, lacks substance and the cultural integrity to pull off what now seems like an uneducated marketing ploy.

Christopher Morency, chief brand officer of Vanguards and the former editorial director of Highsnobiety summed it up best. “Cultural credibility cannot be bought. And it certainly can’t be reduced to a tired marketing template. Tiffany and Nike’s partnership failed on multiple levels. The bottom line: cultural credibility needs to be earned with respect for sneakerheads and their culture, not on their backs.”

Ultimately, the shoe highlights a lack of synergy and fluency with youth culture. Marketing efforts, while clever, lacked knowledge of sneaker culture and were limited by a great lack of imagination. Other creatives on the internet have reinvented their own version of the shoe, many of which are being celebrated by others. So while the Nike x Tiffany & Co collab is generating buzz that will likely lead to purchases, the general consensus on the shoe reflects a much less triumphant affair.

Beyonce And Jay-Z’s Basquiat Tiffany Ad Gets Criticized By The Painter’s Collaborators And Friends

According to a new report at The Daily Beast, the new Tiffany & Co. ad campaign featuring Beyonce and Jay-Z posing alongside a rarely-seen canvas by Jean-Michel Basquiat has drawn the ire of the artist’s closest friends and collaborators, some of whom say they were “horrified” to see the ad. They maintain that Basquiat himself would not have approved of such commercial use of his work, calling it a “prop” to give the ad empty cultural clout.

Alexis Adler, who is described as a girlfriend of the late painter who lived with him during his early career, told The Beast, “I’d seen the ad a couple days ago and I was horrified… the commercialization and commodification of Jean and his art at this point—it’s really not what Jean was about.” Alder pointed out that while Basquiat certainly wanted to be commercially successful, he also wanted his art to be accessible. “Unfortunately, the museums came to Jean’s art late, so most of his art is in private hands and people don’t get to see that art except for the shows,” she notes. “Why show it as a prop to an ad? Loan it out to a museum. In a time where there were very few Black artists represented in Western museums, that was his goal: to get to a museum.”

Al Diaz, Basquiat’s partner in the duo SAMO, also criticized the ad for misappropriating Basquiat’s image and reputation as a “luxury” association. “People think that his association with luxury was because he was impressed with that shit, but he couldn’t care less,” he explains. “It’s not just about wearing an Armani suit. If he wore it, it’s because he could buy it and fuck it up, it wasn’t because the stitches were fabulous or well-made… People won’t see the depth. At this point, the only people that could afford a Basquiat are the people he was targeting. Like, you’re the oppressor. They buy it out so that it becomes meaningless.”

And an unnamed curator of Basquiat’s work takes issue with the company’s insistence that the distinctive blue tone used on Equals Pi would ever be a simple tribute to the remarkably similar “Tiffany blue” signature. “Let’s say he did reference that color on purpose — which seems out of character for him to do something that simple — I think it really flattens his artistic approach,” they said. “He was a really deep thinker. His work wasn’t like, this symbolizes this. Everything references something but then it tells a story of that thing. But let’s say he did though… to use it in an ad, it wouldn’t have been the context. It wouldn’t be used to sell Tiffany’s but to say something critical, maybe about blood diamond extraction or something. I just think it’s a reach.”

Beyonce And Jay-Z Display A Never-Before-Seen Basquiat Painting In Their New Tiffany & Co. Ad

Over the years, Beyonce and Jay-Z have come to represent a standard of luxury for a generation of music fans. Likewise, the long-established jeweler Tiffany & Co. has also represented class and elegance at a high level, so it only makes sense for the brand to tap into The Carters’ cachet as it markets its product to that younger generation. The only thing that would improve such an idea would be some kind of expensive, ridiculous rare art piece — what’s that, you say? A never-before-seen painting of Jean-Michel Basquiat’s? Yeah, that’ll do the trick.

Alexandre Arnault, Tiffany’s executive VP of products and communications, told WWD that the painting, the 1982 “Equals Pi,” is “a way to modernize Tiffany blue.” He elaborated that while the inspiration of the painting isn’t quite ironclad, the choice of the iconic shade was likely intentional. “We don’t have any literature that says he made the painting for Tiffany,” he said.

“But we know a little bit about Basquiat. We know his family. We did an exhibition of his work at the Louis Vuitton Foundation a few years back. We know he loved New York, and that he loved luxury and he loved jewelry. My guess is that the [blue painting] is not by chance. The color is so specific that it has to be some kind of homage. As you can see, there is zero Tiffany blue in the campaign other than the painting. It’s a way to modernize Tiffany blue.”

MASON POOLE FOR TIFFANY & CO.

The campaign marks the first time the company’s signature Tiffany Diamond (worn by Beyonce) appears in such marketing materials, making Beyonce only the fourth woman to wear it after Mary Whitehouse, Audrey Hepburn, and Lady Gaga. A short film accompanying the ad sees Beyonce singing the theme song from the 1961 film Breakfast At Tiffany’s to Jay as he films her with a Super 8 camera.
