Lil Wayne Remixed ‘A Milli’ With A Slew Of Sports Lines In A Performance At The ESPY Awards

Lil Wayne has successfully straddled the line between rap and sports for decades. The 2023 ESPYs were last night, July 12, and some athletic figures walked away with a higher honor than a trophy: An improvised name-check from Lil Wayne during his performance of “A Milli” to open the broadcast.

Lil Wayne seamlessly altered the song’s famous bars to include nods toward LSU women’s basketball standout Angel Reese, Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin, San Antonio Spurs 2023 No. 1 overall pick Victor Wembanyama, and NFL Hall Of Famer-turned-Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders.

The mad dash ended with Wayne spitting, “I want my NIL so I’m goin’ back to college / Tattoos on my face, you can call me Dennis Rodman.” Wayne thanked the crowd before leaving the stage and welcomed everyone to the 2023 ESPYs.

If such a category existed, Wayne would have been the frontrunner for Best Sports Analyst In Rap. The New Orleans icon recently ranked LeBron James as the best basketball player of all time while visiting Matt Barnes and Stephen Jackson’s All The Smoke and weighed in with empathy on Ja Morant’s public slip-ups. Perhaps most stunningly, Lil Wayne praised Eli Manning’s rapping during an appearance on ManningCast last December.

Lil Wayne is easily one of the most legendary artists in all of hip-hop. Overall, in the eyes of many, he is the GOAT of the genre. Although he may not be everyone’s GOAT, he is at least Top 10 in the eyes of most people. After all, he has a ton of classic songs and features. Moreover, his mixtape run will go down in history as one of the best we have ever seen. At this point, you cannot discount anything that Wayne has accomplished throughout his career.

When talking about Lil Wayne, it is very hard to understate just how intertwined he is with the sports world. Of course, he currently has the theme song for Undisputed. Moreover, his songs have been used on numerous NBA broadcasts. At this point, a lot of people associate his songs with memories they have of playing sports. Consequently, that makes him the perfect person to perform at an awards show like The ESPYs. As it so happens, The ESPYs took place last night.

Lil Wayne Had Everyone Out Of Their Seats

The ESPYs are always a huge celebration of the year that was in sports. There were plenty of great storylines from the event. Additionally, as you can see above, Wayne kicked off the show by performing the 2008 track “A Milli.” This is one of Wayne’s most memorable hits, and you can tell that his performance was appreciated. Everyone was out of their seats and dancing along to the performance, which lasted about two minutes. Overall, it was a great way to kick off what turned out to be a very successful event.

The candidates for the 2022 ESPY Awards were announced by ESPN. The show will be broadcast live from Los Angeles, California on July 20 at 8 p.m. ET/ 5 p.m. PT on ABC to honor the best athletes and performances. Nominees include Stephen Curry, Aaron Judge, Cooper Kupp, and more.

For the best NBA Player, there is a heated four-way battle between Nikola Jokić, Joel Embiid, Luka Dončić, and Stephen Curry. The best MLB player is a decision between Shohei Ohtani, Bryce Harper, Aaron Judge, and Jorge Soler. The best NFL player nominees are Cooper Kupp, T.J. Watt, Aaron Rodgers, and Jonathan Taylor.

Aaron Rodgers, who is competing for the fourth time in “Best Athlete, Men’s Sports,” will be up against Stephen Curry, the 2015 winner, Connor McDavid, the 2021 nominee, and newcomer Shohei Ohtani. Along with newcomers Sunisa Lee and Oksana Masters, nominees for “Best Athlete, Women’s Sports” Candace Parker and Katie Ledecky are returning. The sole contestant seeking a second victory is Candace, who won the award in 2008.

The 2022 ESPYS will be broadcast live from Los Angeles on Wednesday, July 20 at 8 p.m. ET/ 5 p.m. PT on ABC, with ESPN announcing the nominations. The star-studded event will commemorate outstanding athletes and accomplishments, relive the year’s high points, and bring together the biggest names in sports.
