Ice Cube Explains To Shaquille O’Neal Why He Blocked His Collaboration With Dr. Dre

Shaquille O’Neal recently brought on Ice Cube to his show, The Big Podcast, during which the legendary rapper revealed why he blocked Shaq from releasing a collaboration with Dr. Dre. The track was titled, “That’s Gangsta,” which addresses what Cube took issue with. He explained that O’Neal was “more than just gangsta” and a star of the Los Angeles Lakers at the time.

“Cube was executive producing one of my records,” Shaq said. “And he put me in the studio with Dr. Dre. I did a song called ‘That’s Gangsta.’ Cube heard it and was like, ‘Nope. We’re not releasing this.’ Dre did the beat. I thought it was nice … And then I played it for Cube … He was like, ‘Shaq, you’re a f*cking Laker, bro. I don’t want you talking about nothing gangsta. We not doing none of that sh*t.’ And it never came out.”

From there, Cube explained: “Shaq is a dope MC, but I just felt the record was off-brand for him because, to me, he’s more than just gangsta. He’s loved by millions, loved by kids. He already established that. And why go backward when you’re already forward? You’re already a household name.” Shaq wasn’t upset with the comments, instead suggesting it taught him an important lesson. “That taught me, Cube, stay true to who you are,” O’Neal said. “‘Cause I ain’t gonna lie. You guys wanna be basketball players, I wanted to be y’all growing up.” Check out the full interview below.

T.I. Speaks On Younger Generation Of Hip-Hop Artists

T.I. compared the proliferation of hip-hop artists from the new generation to the NBA offering anyone who knows how to pick up a basketball an invite to the league. He explained that the talent on display ranges from “exceptionally dope” to “just alright” during an appearance on Shaquille O’Neal’s podcast, The Big Podcast with Shaq.

“This generation reminds me of every other generation,” he began. “You got some people who are exceptionally dope, and some people who are just alright. You know what I mean? But it’s a lot more of it to choose from now. I feel that, actually, what they’ve done with music is equivalent to if they were to open up the doors of the arena and say, ‘anybody think you can play basketball? Come on out the stands out here to the floor. Here go you a jersey, man. Get in the game.’”

Elsewhere in the interview, T.I. discussed Nelly and Usher purchasing ownership stakes in sports teams. While he respects it, he isn’t interested in doing the same. “So many of my contemporaries — like Nelly, you know, he got a piece of Charlotte — and Usher’s got a piece of Cleveland,” he said. “You know, people be asking me, ‘Would I ever do it?’ And I don’t think I would, you know? Because I just can’t see me taking so much of my money, investing it in something, and I can’t do what the f*ck I wanna do. I just can’t imagine that. I’m gonna put my money into something where I can dictate, and I can determine, the way it’s gonna go.”

Shaq Reveals Lonely Life While Telling Jason Kelce To Enjoy Retirement

Shaq painted a sobering picture of his post-retirement life while interviewing Jason Kelce on The Big Podcast. “Enjoy your family, brother. I lost my family and I didn’t have anybody. You got the ring. [I] lost my whole family. I’m in a 100,000-square-foot house all by myself,” Shaq lamented. While sad to hear from the Hall of Famer. he might be trapped in a prison of his own making. In a previous episode of the podcast, Shaq advocated against men sharing their feelings with women. “Whenever something goes down, they throw it back in your face,” Shaq reasoned when asked why he doesn’t open up to his partners. Shaq is divorced and has since struggled to hold down a relationship long-term. In the past, the Hall of Famer has admitted to “making mistakes” and being “greedy” in his first marriage. However, the sharing of feelings doesn’t appear to be a mistake Shaq thinks he’s made.

Meanwhile, one relationship that is working out for Shaq is the more familial one he has with LSU star Angel Reese. Reese called him a “father figure” during a wide-ranging interview that she and other members of LSU did with USA Today. “There’s really strong parallels in their personalities. They love people. They welcome the spotlight that comes with stardom, they both have a great love for this school and an enthusiasm for life,” said Bob Starkey, an LSU assistant coach. During his long tenure in Baton Rouge, Starkey has coached both LSU legends.

Me’Arah O’Neal, Daughter Of Shaq, Commits To Florida

However, while Shaq may live a lonely life, members of his immediate family are thriving. Me’Arah O’Neal, Shaq’s youngest child, signed a national letter of intent with the Florida Gators back in November. In a ceremony at her stepfather’s church in Texas, O’Neal chose Florida over seven other schools, including her father’s alma mater, LSU. “I went on the Florida visit, and I had a feeling that’s where I belonged. And that I was going to be most successful if I went to go play at Florida. I felt like I connected with Coach Kelly more than I connected with any of the other schools that recruited me. She really cares about me not just on the court but off the court. That’s important for me,” O’Neal said.

The #33 recruit in the 2024 class, O’Neal joins a promising Gators class that also includes #16 recruit Alivia McGill, the highest-ranked recruit Florida has ever landed in women’s basketball. Furthermore, O’Neal said that the choice to sign with the Gators was hers alone. “My family was just there to support me. I was pressuring myself to make a decision, but I learned I had to be patient. And I did make this decision on my own,” she said. The Gators have struggled this season. At the time of writing, they have a 13-11 record but are just 4-8 in SEC play.

Shaq Reveals Why He Doesn’t Open Up Emotionally To Women

Shaq has advocated against men sharing their feelings with women. “Whenever something goes down, they throw it back in your face,” Shaq reasoned when asked on The Big Podcast why he doesn’t open up to his partners. Shaq is divorced and has since struggled to hold down a relationship long-term. In the past, the Hall of Famer has admitted to “making mistakes” and being “greedy” in his first marriage. However, the sharing of feelings doesn’t appear to be a mistake Shaq thinks he’s made.

Meanwhile, commenters online were not vibing with the NBA legend’s comments. “You know what’s funny. Women open up to a man and tell him all you been through. He doesn’t throw it in your face. He just does the same stuff to you again 🤦🏿‍♀️🤷🏾‍♀️,” one person noted. “This man cheated on his wife, got divorced. She got remarried and he still proceeded to call her his wife because “that’s mine. Listen to em if y’all want to 💀,” added another.

Furthermore, Reese used “father figure” to describe the Hall of Famer, saying she didn’t see him as a role model or basketball mentor. They have a light airy relationship, which ranges from Shaq giving Reese business advice to Reese roasting Shaq if he is ever spotted out with a woman. Additionally, Reese said she plans to have him walk with her on Senior Day. This is an honor typically reserved for family members. If Reese plans to declare for the WNBA this year, Senior Day will likely be LSU’s regular-season finale at home against Kentucky.
