Safaree Makes Fun Of His Own Moves In Nicki Minaj’s “Super Bass” Video

2011 was a very different time, and whenever artists look back on their previous timing -– however small or innocuous -– it often makes for an interesting retrospective. But sometimes, it’s as simple as just some jokes about dance trends at the time, as Safaree recently realized concerning his appearance in his former flame Nicki Minaj’s “Super Bass” music video. Via Twitter, he reflected on his moves in the visual, poking fun at his own 20/20 hindsight corniness and that of the culture at the time. “Yo wat the hell was I doing in that super bass video [crying-laughing emojis]. yo I am really a crazy a&& ni%%%a I don’t give a sh*% bout nothing [crying-laughing emojis].”

Furthermore, Safaree often reflects on his relationship with Nicki Minaj with a lot of amicable and appreciative jesting, such as recalling her disses towards his fashion choices when thinking about what to wear for her Pink Friday 2 world tour. “I’m definitely going to a Gag City concert in full disguise,” he tweeted earlier this year. “Y’all will not even notice me and I will enjoy the show!! Can’t wait!! Ima document it too and drop a video after [crying-laughing emojis]. Imma wear a jean vest too! Can’t wait!!”

However, not all of his reflections on the Nicki Minaj bond are as positive or playful, such as his reflections on when she kissed Nas in the “Right By My Side” music video. “You wanna know what’s so crazy?” he told the Keep It A Stack podcast. “I didn’t know it happened until the video came out. N***a, I was hurt, when that s**t happened, I was hurt. I was there the whole day so I was like, ‘Damn. Did that happen when I left to go?’ I must’ve left for like an hour, two hours and I think that’s when that scene happened, yo.”

Meanwhile, folks still like to reminisce on their working relationship, such as an old video of Nicki Minaj and Safaree dropping bars in their rap group. Maybe the two will continue to acknowledge each other and reflect on their fling in the future. Unless things actually get contentious, we doubt they have a lot of animosity towards each other at this point. If nothing else, we wonder what the Trinidadian MC would say about the “Super Bass” video today.

Nicki Minaj Side-Eyes AI Cover Of “Super Bass” Online

Nicki Minaj is not the biggest fan of A.I. technology in music, and as such, fans can’t tell whether a recent tweet is her joking or not. Moreover, she recently reacted on Twitter to an artificial intelligence-generated cover of her hit song “Super Bass,” but in the style of 1970s soul and funk. “I hate yall so bad for this,” Queen Barb quote-tweeted the cover itself, and it’s kind of hard to tell whether she’s serious or she’s joking. After all, sometimes that language isn’t as mean as it comes across on paper, but it’s also entirely possible that she’s tired of seeing A.I. take over in this way.

Furthermore, it’s very understandable why Nicki Minaj would want her classics preserved, especially in the face of edits without her approval. That being said, it’s very clear to see that no one, whether it’s a person or an A.I. generated creation, will be able to replace her sheer energy and passion. These are the kinds of qualities that make the ongoing Pink Friday 2 world tour a record-breaking and wondrous run for fans, which they couldn’t be happier with. No matter how hard the computer tries, it will never be able to capture crowds’ imaginations, joys, and spirits quite like that.

Elsewhere, Nicki Minaj is also defending herself with words, not just with her astonishments, like her current legal action against a blogger over defamatory comments. The social media user allegedly accused her of being a “cokehead” all the way back around 2022, when the lawsuit emerged. The Trinidadian MC requested a status update on the case, as apparently the defendant took a long time to reply and still didn’t meet an extension. In addition, she accused the blogger of unfulfilled compliance with discovery requests.

Meanwhile, there are some other legal issues on Nicki Minaj’s horizon right now, but it seems like they will all stay pretty controlled. It’s not like any of them have been able to stop the Pink Friday 2 world tour’s success, nor its headliner’s massive reach. But what could one day get in the way is if A.I. technology runs rampant and cheats musicians out of their likeness, voice, image, and therefore money. And it doesn’t look like Roman will let that happen.

Nicki Minaj Follows Cardi B As The Second-Ever Female Rapper To Have A Diamond-Certified Song

Back in March, Cardi B achieved a huge milestone: She became the first-ever female rapper to have a solo song be certified Diamond, meaning it garnered over 10 million sales in the US. Now, a few months later, Cardi’s predecessor has followed her achievement. Nicki Minaj’s 2010 track “Super Bass” just hit 10 million sales, meaning she’s the second-ever female rapper to have a song be Diamond-certified.

“Super Bass” originally appeared on the deluxe version of Minaj’s debut album Pink Friday, nearly a decade ago. Now celebrating its new Diamond status, Minaj took to social media to share her gratitude. She posted a video of the official Diamond certification plaque, which is encrusted with shimmering rhinestones and features a photo of Minaj from the “Super Bass” single art. In the post’s caption, the rapper thanked her fans for a “decade of support” and even gave Taylor Swift a special shout-out. “Thank you for over a decade of support,” she wrote. “(special thx to Ester Dean, Kane, Juice, Taylor Swift, Sofia Grace & Rosie, Ellen, Young Money/Cash Money & Republic. This one was released b4 the streaming era, so millions of fans actually purchased the song. I’m so grateful for you guys. Sending love & blessings your way.”

Cardi B is a Warner Music artist. Uproxx is an independent subsidiary of Warner Music Group.

Stephen Colbert Parodies Nicki Minaj’s Unlikely Vaccine Story With A Riff On ‘Super Bass’

Nicki Minaj’s vaccine tall tale continued to inspire content as late-night host Stephen Colbert joined in on the fun on his show last night. A few days ago, Nicki tweeted she is unvaccinated because her cousin told her his friend had an unusual adverse reaction to a vaccine that caused his testes to swell up. Despite that horror story being debunked by Dr. Anthony Fauci, who pointed out there’s ‘no mechanistic reason’ for a vaccine to affect one’s sexual organs, Nicki has remained more or less steadfast.

However, the unintentional hilarity of the tweet’s “Caribbean auntie WhatsApp broadcast energy” prompted plenty of equally hilarious meme-ing at Nicki’s expense. Colbert, looking to one-up Twitter’s plethora of pranksters, hijacking Nicki’s one-time biggest hit, “Super Bass,” turn to playfully jab at the likely mythical cousin’s friend’s dilemma with “Super Balls.” The show was cold-opened with the video, to the audience’s delight.

Remixing Nicki’s colorful video with closeups of all kinds of balls (basketballs, beach balls, disco balls, ping pong balls, etc.), the lyrics are revamped to reflect fictional misfortune, referencing King-Kong, the moons of Mars, and James And The Giant Peach. Colbert also roasted Nicki’s narrative in his opening monologue, cracking, “Nicki Minaj is known for her extensive research on what anacondas want… if and when you’ve got buns, hun.” Taking the iffy provenance of her story to task, he snarked, “To be fair to Dr. Minaj, everyone knows there’s no source more reliable than your extended family’s acquaintances in another country. Her report comes straight from the New England Journal of My Cousin’s Friend in Trinidad. Check out this week’s study: ‘I Heard His Girlfriend Got Pregnant From a Hot Tub.’”
