Common & Black Thought Join Forces On Afrocentric Funk-Inspired Track “When We Move”

Veteran MC Common is back with a new revolutionary anthem. The funk-inspired single, “When We Move” features lyricist Black Thought and Nigerian singer Seun Kuti. Kuti is the son of legendary afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti. Kuti’s cadence and saxophone riffs add a distinct layer of diasporic-influenced sounds to the track.

While celebrating Black people, Common is intentional about being inclusive by negating any notions of respectability politics. “I’ma just give Black power its flowers/Whether in the projects or the palace,” he raps.

Common and Black Thought previously teamed up on “Say Peace” for his 2020 release of A Beautiful Revolution Pt. 1. The Chicago native recently announced its follow-up, A Beautiful Revolution Pt. 2, which is set to be released on September 10th. The album will also include collaborations with Jessica Care Moore, PJ, Marcus King, Isaiah Sharkey, Brittany Howard, and Morgan Parker.

When speaking about the album, Common shared he wanted “to bring joy to people’s hearts, fun to their lives and smiles to their souls.”

Common, Black Thought, and Seun Kuti perform their new collaboration for the first time on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon (on August 19).

Quotable Lyrics:

We move in silence, we move the loudest
Ancestors in my dreams, they move the wildest
They prayed about us, praised and shouted
Picture this country bein’ brave without us
A slave’s nostalgia move through the woods with vigor
When we got free, the world moved with us
Now they wanna change their bodies, go figure
Used to call us, now they wanna be niggas
We the rivers that move through the jungle, yo
When we move, we make the world wonderful

Abra’s “Unlock It” With Playboi Carti Was Worth The Wait

On July 30, Abra’s comeback single “Unlock It” was hurling towards streaming services when the featured artist, Playboi Carti, reportedly blocked its release due to being unhappy with the mixing on his verse. Nearly a month later, the single has finally arrived, and it was definitely worth the wait.

Abra’s first major-label single boasts production from the legendary electronic producer Boys Noize as well as a high-spirited feature from the Whole Lotta Red artist, who actually has a close connection with her. “Unlock It” is a reunion of sorts for them, as they both rose to prominence while under Father’s indie label Awful Records during the early 2010s. Now, after traveling different paths, the two Atlanta artists have linked back up and delivered a record that just might be Abra and Playboi Carti’s next hit.

“‘Unlock It’ means so much to me for more reasons than I can count, and as someone very sentimental and nostalgic, it is truly a blessing to be able to unlock the next level of my career with a friend,” Abra said in a statement. “I’ve always been so proud of what Carti’s been able to achieve and having the fortune of reuniting with him for this song specifically feels like a trophy to what the song is about — validation for the long winding journey it took to get here and makes me feel a little more at home in this crazy new world I’m about to step into!”

Give it a listen below and let us know in the comments if you’re feeling Abra and Playboi Carti’s upbeat new collab.

Big Boi & Sleepy Brown Debut “The Big Sleep Is Over” Following Joint Album Announcement

6-time Grammy-winning rapper Big Boi needs little introduction. Best known as one-half of hip-hop’s most iconic duo, Outkast alongside Andre 3000, he has now teamed up with singer-songwriter, and platinum producer, Sleepy Brown of Organized Noise. On Friday, September 3rd, the two will release their highly anticipated debut album, The Big Sleepover

Big Boi and Brown have a long history of making chart-topping records together. As a member of one of the most important production collectives in hip-hop history, Organized Noise, Brown along with Rico Wade and Ray Murray penned and produced a number of hits for Outkast including the #1 single, “The Way You Move” from the duo’s fifth studio album Speakerboxxx/The Love Below.

With heavy-hitting 808’s and a Caribbean flair as a result of Jamaican vocalist K-1, “The Big Sleep is Over” is a track one can vibe out to in any setting. As expected the Southern lyricist, does not hold back on impressive one-liners while boasting about his rapping skills. “I make fantasy reality so bit*h get out the way/I’m perfection personified on the first take/Jedi rap shit, I was blessed with on my birthday/Check my track record, I sit back and attack shit in the worst way/ Never been washed,” raps Big Boi.

The dancehall-leaning single is accompanied by creative animated visuals that display Big Boi as the size of a bug in the middle of a marijuana field. The pair will be on tour this fall, hopefully, fans can expect a Dungeon Family reunion.

The Beat Switch On Frank Ocean’s “Nights” Still Feels Otherworldly

Frank Ocean’s debut album channel ORANGE was already a huge moment in Hip-Hop and music history, in general. The gold-certified record earned the former Odd Future artist three Grammy nominations, but four years later, when Frank finally returned with new music, it was clear that his lauded debut was just the beginning for Frank Ocean.

Over two days in August 2016, Frank Ocean released Endless, an Apple Music exclusive visual album, and somehow finessed his way out of his Def Jam recording contract. A day later, he released Blonde, and while Frank refrained from submitting it for Grammy consideration, the free-flowing album has gone on to outsell his debut and become his first platinum-certified record.

Frank Ocean performs at the 2017 Panorama Music Festival on Randall's Island in New York on July 28, 2017

Blonde is often regarded as Frank Ocean’s best, or at least his career-defining, album, and with tracks like “Pink + White,” “Self Control,” the Andre 3000 “Solo (Reprise)” interlude, and “Godspeed,” it’s easy to see why fans have taken to so keenly to it. Another track that was a highlight from the record was “Nights,” a personal two-part track from Frank that has an ethereal beat switched. Give it a listen below.

Five years later, what are your favorite tracks from Blonde? Do you think the album deserves all the fanfare it receives or is it overrated?

Quotable Lyrics

After ‘Trina hit I had to transfer campus
Your apartment out in Houston’s where I waited
Stayin’ with you when I didn’t have a address
Fuckin’ on you when I didn’t own a mattress
Workin’ on a way to make it outta Texas, every night

Trippie Redd Is A “Rich MF” On Album Highlight With Polo G & Lil Durk

Following the release of Trippie Redd’s new album Trip At Knight, fans have been raving about a few of the songs on the tracklist. At the same time, everyone is wondering where the promised collaboration with Drake, titled “Betrayal,” has gone after previously being revealed as the third song on the album, but not yet being released on streaming platforms. As we patiently wait for the new Drake x Trippie Redd, people have taken a liking to two songs, in particular, gravitating towards “Matt Hardy 999” with Juice WRLD and “Rich MF” with Polo G and Lil Durk.

We’re placing a highlight on the latter song, which sees Trippie use an interpolated version of Valee’s “Womp Womp” flow in the chorus. The infectious new track starts with a standout hook from Trippie before flowing into his verse. Polo G takes over in the second verse and Lil Durk closes the song out with the third verse before Trippie comes through for another chorus. The song was produced by Hitmaka.

Presently trending on Twitter, find out what the hype behind Trippie Redd’s new song “Rich MF” is by listening below.

Jhené Aiko & Swae Lee Reunite On “In The Dark” From The “Shang-Chi & The Legend Of The Ten Rings” Soundtrack

They came together years ago when Swae Lee was featured on Jhené Aiko’s “Sativa,” and now the two artists sing their way through their new single, “In The Dark.” The track is featured on the soundtrack to Marvel’s Shang-Chi & The Legend Of The Ten Rings, an action film that is slated for release on September 3. “In The Dark” follows the soundtrack’s previous release, “Lazy Susan,” which featured 21 Savage, Warren Hue, Rich Brian, and Masiwei.

On this latest single, you’ll find both artists singing to their lovers as they lament over deserving much more from their relationships. Despite feeling underappreciated, they vow to stay true to their partners as long as they aren’t left “in the dark.” Jhené and Swae recently appeared on the red carpet of Shang-Chi & The Legend Of The Ten Rings‘ premiere and praised the film ahead of its release.
