Saints Extend Tyrann Mathieu

The New Orlean Saints have extended Tyrann Mathieu, giving Honey Badger two more years in the Big Easy. The contract, as mentioned, is for two years and totals $13M. In 2023, Mathieu had 75 tackles (50 solo) and four interceptions. This put him joint-fifth in tackles and joint-first in interceptions on a team that finished 9-8 on the season but missed out on the playoffs due to tiebreakers. The Saints are facing the daunting task of navigating an offseason that sees them nearly $69M over the salary cap despite the historic increase of $30.6M.

Mathieu enters his third season with the Saints. He began his career in 2013 as a third-round pick for the Cardinals. He left Arizona for Houston in 2018 before joining Kansas City a year later. He was a major contributor to the start of the Patrick Mahomes dynasty before leaving for New Orleans in 2022. Mathieu has 775 tackles and 33 interceptions for 501 yards and 4 touchdowns across his decade-plus in the league.

Damar Hamlin Surviving First Round Of Bills Roster Cuts Garners Mixed Reactions From Fans

Meanwhile, in Buffalo, Damar Hamlin is one of the few players left at the secondary positions for the Bills as the team began to cut players ahead of the new NFL year. The cuts included CB Tre’Davious White, and safeties Jordan Poyer and Siran Neal. That means that barring some major free agent signings or trades, Hamlin will likely be a starting safety next season. Most draft analysts have the Bills drafting a wide receiver in the first round.

Fans were less than happy with the news. Not only was Poyer loved by the team, but Hamlin is far from an equivalent replacement for him. Additionally, such drastic cuts appears to indicate that the Bills have closed their championship window for the time and are looking to rebuild a cheaper roster for the 2024 season. How do you feel about the Bills’ roster moves? Let us know in the comments below.

Saints Latest Sports Venture For Fif

However, the Saints are just the latest sports team to partner with Sire Spirits. The brand already has an agreement with the NHL’s Vegas Golden Knights, as well as several NBA teams. Furthermore, Fif has a special place in the hearts of Vegas fans. The rapper was chosen to sound the T-Mobile Arena siren ahead of Game 5 of the Stanley Cup earlier this year.

The siren appeared to work its magic as the Golden Knights decimated the Panthers 9-3. After two periods, the Golden Knights led 6-1. The game became tied for the third-highest margin of victory in a Stanley Cup Finals game. There have been six other instances of a 6-goal margin in the Stanley Cup Finals. Many hailed 50 as the team’s good luck charm, attributing his siren ring as helping cause the rout. The win sealed the Cup for Vegas, marking the franchise’s first title. Furthermore, it was the second major championship for the city of Las Vegas, following on from the Las Vegas Aces’ WNBA title in 2022. The Aces repeated as WNBA champions earlier this month.

Foster Moreau To Play NFL Season Despite Cancer Diagnosis

Foster Moreau has been in the NFL since 2019. After winning a national championship with Joe Burrow and LSU, the tight end was taken in the fourth round of the Draft by the Raiders. Primarily backing up Darren Waller, Moreau played in 61 games across his rookie contract. Additionally, he was fined in 2020 for attending a maskless party hosted by Waller. He had recorded 1107 yards and 12 touchdowns as the Raiders declined to re-sign him.

However, Moreau’s offseason went a little unexpectedly. A medical exam with the New Orleans Saints revealed that Moreau was suffering from Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, a form of cancer. It begins in the white blood cells and affects the lymphatic system, part of the body’s immune system. Despite this, Moreau isn’t going to let a little thing like cancer stop him from playing football.

Moreau To The Saints For Three Years

According to Moreau’s agent, Joe Linta, Moreau has signed a three-year deal with the New Orleans. The contract is said to be worth $12 million, with $8 million guaranteed. After trading veteran Adam Trautman during the draft, the Saints have been left a little light at tight end. The most experienced player at the position currently on the roster is Taysom Hill, the former quarterback that the Saints have long utilized as a tight end. Moreau brings both production and veteran experience to the position. The Saints did not draft a tight end but did sign Central Michgan’s Joel Wilson as an undrafted free agent. Instead, the Saints focused on bolstering their defense with the first picks.

14 tight ends were taken in total, including six in the first two rounds. Interestingly, Darnell Washington, who was considered one of the best tight ends in the draft, was amazingly still available in the third round. However, the Saints instead took TCU running back Kendre Miller. Washington was drafted 22 picks later by the Steelers with the 93rd pick. Moreau is cleared to resume football activities next week. However, it’s unknown how much treatment he will need during the season. Be sure to make HotNewHiphop your first stop for all the latest sports news and analysis.

Derek Carr Signs With The Saints, Fans React

Derek Carr was one of the biggest free-agent quarterbacks in the NFL this offseason. Overall, there are some other interesting storylines to watch. For instance, Aaron Rodgers is someone who has been teasing a decision in regard to the Green Bay Packers. Moreover, Lamar Jackson and Daniel Jones are looking for massive contracts. However, if they do not get them, they could very well end up on other teams. This is all going down as Carr has been trying to find a new team to play for.

Out of all of these quarterbacks, Carr was the readiest to make a decision. He was a free agent and could go as he pleases. In fact, there had been all sorts of reports about Carr considering the New Orleans Saints. Overall, they are a franchise that has been in need of a new franchise QB, and Carr seemed to fit the bill. Although he hasn’t won a ton in terms of the postseason, he is still a top-15 quarterback in the league. Consequently, the Saints had some mutual interest.

Derek Carr Makes A Decision

Today, Carr took to Twitter where he posted a video of Tyrann Mathieu on the field prior to a Saints game. This pretty well confirmed the fact that Carr would be signing with the team. Subsequently, the Saints have some decisions to make as it pertains to Jameis Winston. They could trade him or just release him entirely. Moreover, they also have to think about Andy Dalton, who is also on the roster. Either way, it is confirmed that Carr is now their quarterback of the future, and it will be interesting to see how this goes.

As you can see in the tweets below, fans had some split reactions to this latest development. Overall, there seems to be this sense that Carr is making a lateral move and that he cannot win anything with the Saints. However, there are quite a few Saints fans out there who are very happy about their new QB. No matter what, this is a far cry from the days of Drew Brees. Let us know what you think of the move, in the comments below.
