Rick Rubin Hurt Red Hot Chili Peppers More Than He Helped, A Former RHCP Member Believes

Since the ’80s, Rick Rubin has been consistently praised and hailed as one of the most important producers in music. One of his most frequent collaborators is Red Hot Chili Peppers, as he’s produced all of their albums since their 1991 breakthrough Blood Sugar Sex Magik (except for 2016’s The Getaway, which Danger Mouse produced). That said, Josh Klinghoffer, RHCP’s guitarist for The Getaway and 2011’s I’m With You, didn’t see Rubin as an asset.

In a recent interview with VWMusic, Klinghoffer was asked about his takeaway from his time as a Chili Pepper. He teased some strong feelings, saying he’s “incredibly conflicted” about his output with the band because with both albums he was a part of, “producers got in the way of us truly making great music or a great record.”

He didn’t mention Danger Mouse by name but he did call out Rubin directly, saying, “I like almost all of the songs that we wrote together, but seldom did we capture them in the best way. I will say that in the case of I’m With You, I feel Rick Rubin was way more a hindrance than a help. He told me once, ‘I just want to help the songs be the best they can be.’ I should’ve said, ‘Well, then get your driver to come and get you.’”

Red Hot Chili Peppers Unveil The ‘Return Of The Dream Canteen’ Tracklist

It’s going to get spicy this fall when the Red Hot Chili Peppers drop their forthcoming album Return Of The Dream Canteen on October 14. To kick off the rollout, the legendary band released their new single “Tippa My Tongue” today, just under a week after they shared a promotional video for the album.

It has been a year of hard work for Red Hot Chili Peppers, who just three months ago released Unlimited Love, led by singles “Nerve Flip,” “Not The One,” “Poster Child,” and “Black Summer.” Listeners ought to especially be excited by this output as it has been six years since their 2016 album The Getaway. Said excitement is likely what led to a fan rushing the stage to try and sing with them and Thundercat in their recent live show at College Street Music Hall.

Post Malone Will Accompany Red Hot Chili Peppers For A Tour In Australia And New Zealand In 2023

Since the beginning of last month, Red Hot Chili Peppers have been touring Europe with plans to bring their talents to North America later this month. It comes after the band released their 12th album Unlimited Love back in April. The project is a 17-track effort that’s their first full-length release since 2016’s The Getaway. Prior to releasing Unlimited Love, Red Hot Chili Peppers announced a worldwide tour that features a list of openers that include The Strokes, St. Vincent, ASAP Rocky, King Princess, Haim, Beck, Anderson .Paak & The Free Nationals, and Thundercat.

Now, that list is a little bit longer as Post Malone will join Red Hot Chili Peppers for six shows in Australia and New Zealand. Posty and Red Hot Chili Peppers will make stops in Auckland, Dunedin, Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, and Perth starting in late January and concluding in mid-February 2023. That tour will follow Post Malone’s own tour in support of his fourth album Twelve Carat Toothache. Roddy Ricch will join him across the tour’s 33 shows which kick off in September and continues through November.

Red Hot Chili Peppers Made The Odd Move Of Letting Opener ASAP Rocky Close Their Concert

Last night (June 22), Red Hot Chili Peppers performed at Emirates Old Trafford in Manchester, England, with support from Thundercat and ASAP Rocky. Typically, the support acts go on before the headliner (they are called “openers,” after all), but that’s not what happened yesterday.

According to The Independent, signs in the stadium read, “Due to unforeseen circumstances, A$AP Rocky will now play immediately after the Red Hot Chili Peppers.” Indeed, following RHCP’s set, Rocky put on a four-song performance, which technically made him the headliner and Chili Peppers the support act (with an exceptionally long set for an opener).

One fan, journalist Darren Burke, tweeted, “Red Hot Chili Peppers cut short their set tonight so support act ASAP Rocky could play AFTER their headline set. Been going to gigs for 30 odd years and never seen anything like it. Many disappointed fans. Bizarre end to the night.”

A brief fan-shot clip shows Rocky performing as what looks like a good number of attendees face away from the stage and head for the exits, since they presumably already saw what they went to see and didn’t have much interest in sticking around for Rocky, who isn’t musically similar to RHCP.

Claims that RHCP cut their set short to accommodate Rocky seem unfounded, however: Per Setlist.fm, the band had an 18-song set, which is as many (or more) songs than their recent performances have included.
