Nicki Minaj Reacts To ‘Super Freaky Girl’ Debuting At No. 1 And Making History For Female Rappers

Nicki Minaj has found herself in the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart a handful of times now. Her first time was with her featured appearance on Doja Cat’s “Say So” in 2020, then with her Tekashi 69 collaboration “Trollz” later that year. Just yesterday, she landed her third No. 1, doing it unaccompanied this time with “Super Freaky Girl,” which debuted in the top spot. This has Minaj excited, so she took to social media to celebrate.

Sharing an Instagram post noting the various things the song’s No. 1 debut means, Minaj wrote, “You did it barbz. You did it. I love you so much. like so so SO much. Thank you.” She shared a more concise version of that message on Twitter, writing simply, “You did it [teary eyed emoji].”

As for what “Super Freaky Girl” has done, it’s the first song by a solo female rapper to debut at No. 1 on the Hot 100 since Lauryn Hill did with “Doo Wop (That Thing)” in 1998. It also makes Minaj the first female lead artist to debut at No. 1 in 2022, and the first female rapper with multiple songs to debut on top. Aside from the Hot 100, “Super Freaky Girl” is also No. 1 on a number of other charts, including Streaming Songs, Hip-Hop/R&B Songs, Digital Song Sales, R&B/Hip-Hop Streaming Songs, R&B/Hip-Hop Digital Songs Sales, and Rap Streaming Songs.

Nicki Minaj's "Super Freaky Girl" Makes No. 1 Debut on Billboard Hot 100

Nicki Minaj and her new single “Super Freaky Girl” has debuted on top of the Billboard Hot 100. The single is Minaj’s third time on top of the chart, but her first time unaccompanied. She previously appeared alongside 6ix9ine on top with “Trollz” and with Doja Cat on “Say So.”

“Super Freaky Girl” features a sample of Rick James’ “Super Freak” and had a monster week of 21.1 millions treams, 4.6 million radio airplay audience impressions and 89,000 downloads in its first week.

“Super Freaky Girl” is also Minaj’s 21st single to reach the Top 10 of the Hot 100. It is the rapper’s second single to do so this year, following her collaboration with Lil Baby “Do We Have a Problem.”

In addition to the top of the Hot 100, Minaj’s new single tops the Streaming Songs and Digital Song Sales charts.

Adding to the moment, Minaj topping the charts follows “Break My Soul” by Beyoncé and “About Damn Time” by Lizzo, making for the first time in this century that three solo Black female artists have topped the Hot 100. Minaj is also the first solo rapper to debut on top of the Billboard Hot 100 since Lauryn Hill in 1998.

Nicki Minaj, along with LL Cool J and Jack Harlow, will host and present the night’s major events as the 2022 “VMAs” air LIVE from Prudential Center on Sunday, August 28 at 8PM ET/PT.

By adopting a more creative and distinctive approach to the conventional “host” role seen in past years, the three rappers will announce the show’s star-studded lineup of performers, presenters, and winners.

Nicki Minaj’s ‘Super Freaky Girl’ Debuts At No. 1 On The Hot 100, Making History Along The Way

Nicki Minaj’s latest single, “Super Freaky Girl” has debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, making history along the way. While women in hip-hop have made a resurgence on the chart in the last couple of years, “Super Freaky Girl” is now the first song by a solo female rap act to debut at the top of the chart since 1998 when Lauryn Hill’s “Doo Wop (That Thing)” was released in limited quantities making the song eligible to appear on the chart after initially being released as a radio-only single two months earlier.

Meanwhile, Nicki helped push her own hit to the top of the charts by teasing it on Instagram a month before its release, then taking a fan poll when the title needed to be changed for copyright reasons. Finally, after the single’s release on August 12, she followed up less than a week later with the “Roman Remix” of the song, which added another verse, and juiced its streams at the 11th hour to get her all the way over the hill (and past Harry Styles, whose single “As It Was” held onto the top spot for 10 weeks prior).

“Super Freaky Girl” is now Nicki’s third No. 1 single after she cracked the seal with Doja Cat on “Say So” in 2020, then followed up with Tekashi 69 and “Trollz” later that year.

Barbz are elated at the fact that Nicki Minaj is gearing up for a new era. On the heels of her latest single, “Super Freaky Girl,” Minaj has teased the colorful visual, which may include an appearance from Hunger Games actor Alexander Ludwig. She’s also released an extended version of the song, which features an appearance from her alter-ego, Roman Zolanski. Last night, Minaj dropped an acapella version of “Super Freaky Girl,” which was only available for an hour and a half. While fans rallied and purchased the song in droves, Minaj admitted that she hadn’t listened to this particular version.

“I refused to listen to it,” said Minaj in a tweet. “I don’t think I’ve ever dropped an a cappella… I knew if I listened I probably wouldn’t approve it.”

Later this month, Minaj will host the MTV Video Music Awards, alongside LL Cool J and Jack Harlow. She will also receive the Video Vanguard Award.

“Nicki has broken barriers for women in hip-hop with her versatility and creative artistry,” said Bruce Gillmer, president of talent and music programming at Paramount, in a statement. “She has shifted the music industry and cemented her status as a global superstar with her crossover appeal, genre-defying style, and continuing to be unapologetically ‘Nicki’.”
