Creating films is usually a long and tedious process with a lot of moving parts that need to work in harmony. Moreover, many films are a labor of love from the cast and crew alike, so it is a shock when they get shelved. It’s especially sad when these films have already gone past pre-production before being suddenly canceled. One of the most recent examples of this is Warner Bros.’s Batgirl, which was canceled out of the blue. Since the beginning of cinema, there have been circumstances where movies that have been written, cast, and sometimes even fully filmed and edited were completely scrapped. Here are seven of such movies that were anticipated but later given the boot.

Fantastic Four

The unreleased 1994 Fantastic Four movie is, ironically, one of the most popular adaptations of the characters. It was produced by Roger Corman and Bernd Eichinger of Constantin Film and had already begun promotion when it was all unceremoniously stopped. Stan Lee claimed that Eichinger never planned on releasing the movie and just wanted to retain the rights to the characters. However, Eichinger alleged that he was paid by Marvel to discard the movie. Why? Because allegedly, its low-budget look would hurt the company.

Batgirl

One of the more recent movies to make waves for being shelved is Batgirl. Warner Bros’s decision to kill production on the highly anticipated movie came as a huge shock. The news of its cancellation came in August 2022. Unsurprisingly, a massive backlash followed from fans, especially since reports showed that the movie was already in post-production. Warner Bros. stated that the movie was canceled because the company wanted to focus on theatrical releases, and Batgirl was set to release on HBO Max. However, many people think that Warner Bros. was looking for a movie to write off for a tax break. Unfortunately, Batgirl got the short end of the stick.

Scoob! Holiday Haunt

Around the same time that Warner Bros. announced the cancelation of Batgirl, other movies were shelved. One of the most popular was the anticipated Scoob! prequel. Scoob! was released amid the pandemic in 2020 and was a hit for viewers at home despite its box office failure. Holiday Haunt was announced as a Christmas-themed prequel movie and made a ton of buzz. Even though screenwriter Tony Cervone said the movie was already “practically finished,” Warner Bros. announced its cancelation, citing the same reasons as Batgirl.

Silver & Black

The Sony Spiderman Universe has been trying to find a way to introduce Black Cat for some time now. She was initially meant to be introduced in Spiderman 4, but Sam Raimi decided to part ways with the studio after the third movie. Their next attempt was with The Amazing Spider-Man series, but after the failure of the second movie, that idea was halted, too. Eventually, Sony brought on Gina Prince-Blythewood to direct a female-led movie in the Spiderman universe titled Silver & Black. It was to be centered around the characters Silver Sable and Black Cat. However, it became one of the most unexpected cancellations of the 2010s, joining the list of shelved movies.

Gore

Netflix threw down the big bucks for Gore, which was meant to be a biopic about Gore Vidal. The film was meant to star Kevin Spacey as the prolific writer and public figure. However, just as filming for the movie wrapped, the sexual misconduct allegations against the lead actor were made public. Kevin Spacey was accused of and sued for sexual assault, and despite the $40 million budget of the movie, Netflix immediately dropped Gore. Vidal is a fascinating historical figure, and many people were interested in what the biopic had to say about his life. Nonetheless, as far as expected shelved movies go, Gore takes the cake. The allegations against Spacey would have almost certainly resulted in a massive flop.

Empires Of The Deep

Empires of the Deep is one of the most bizarre cases of shelved movies. It was conceptualized and funded by Chinese billionaire Jon Jiang. Jiang was inspired by the likes of James Cameron’s Avatar, and even hired Cameron’s long friend and collaborator Randall Frakes to work on the script. The script went through dozens of drafts and changed writers 10 times before casting began, which was just as tumultuous. The movie eventually became a running joke for its unstable production. Despite the movie being slotted for a 2011 release, Jiang was unable to find a company willing to distribute it.

Justice League: Mortal

Justice League: Mortal was one of the most anticipated DC movies to be announced, but it was subsequently shelved. George Miller was hired as director, with Michele and Kieran Mulroney onboard as screenwriters. The movie was supposed to be a live-action adaptation of the popular Justice League Unlimited animated series. While there was a complete script and casting process, it never began filming. The first roadblock that production faced was due to the 2007 WGA strikes. However, even after the strikes, there was a three-month delay due to complications with the Australian Film Commission, as filming was meant to take place in Sydney. Warner Bros. decided to ultimately scrap the project, focusing on more solo hero movies after the success of the Dark Knight trilogy.

From movie remakes to prequels, franchises, and live-action adaptations, Hollywood is clearly not interested in new intellectual property anymore. While reboots and franchising sequels are met with a range of mild curiosity to total indifference, movie remakes are often frowned upon. Successes like the acclaimed Dune and A Star Is Born remain the exception to the rule, but the vast majority never seem to hit the mark. What’s more concerning is that nobody asked for them!

Footloose (2011)

1984’s Footloose follows a young man who, upon moving to a new town, finds that dancing is outlawed among its teenage population. Soon after, he sets out to bring life back to the youth. The original was a cultural reset with an iconic soundtrack, and what is probably still Kevin Bacon’s most iconic role. This is one of the reasons why the remake was considered mediocre by many. The plotline of a teen culture that loved to dance didn’t translate to a modern audience. Moreover, the movie didn’t even have a great soundtrack, becoming one of the least impressive remakes out there.

Carrie (2013)

Many disappointing movie remakes tend to fail because they deviate too far from the original. However, 2013’s Carrie was disliked by fans for a completely different reason. The movie lacked originality and brought nothing new to the story of a young girl coming to terms with her changing body in a harsh world. Carrie White’s story was already perfectly told in the 1976 adaptation, and despite Chloe Grace Moretz’s acting chops, the 2013 version just felt uninspired. Furthermore, while director Kimberly Pierce’s name garnered a lot of interest, the movie fell flat.

The Mummy (2017)

Considering that the 1999 version of The Mummy was a remake itself, and is now a cult classic, you would think that producers would know when to leave a story alone. However, Universal decided to take the comedic tone of the Brendan Fraser-led trilogy and replace it with a grim and too-serious version. Even Tom Cruise couldn’t save this critically panned film. The reboot was meant to launch the Dark Universe, Universal’s cinematic universe, but its failure led to the entire concept being scrapped.

The Craft: Legacy (2020)

Zoe Lister-Jones’s The Craft: Legacy was marketed as a sequel to 1996’s The Craft. However, the similarities in the plot made it lean closer to yet another entry in the list of unnecessary movie remakes. The Craft: Legacy follows almost the exact plot structure as the original, with a coven of teenage witches getting in over their heads with their newfound powers. Nonetheless, the remake fails to capture the essence that made the original so beloved. Though the movie deserves props for its inclusiveness, many fans simply believe that it was more concerned with being modern than telling a compelling and coherent story. On the other hand, the original was not afraid to be gritty and messy.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003)

One of the pioneering films of the modern slasher horror genre, 1974’s The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is still a classic today. And the 2003 version is proof that movie remakes need to take a back seat to the original material. Although the original movie has inspired a wave of sequels and spinoffs, none have been as hated by fans as the 2003 version. It lacked all of the subtle filmmaking choices and underlying social commentary that made the first movie a cult classic.

Ghostbusters (2016)

As far as unwanted movie remakes go, 2016’s Ghostbusters received a lot of undeserved criticism. This mostly boiled down to unchecked racism and misogyny. However, there’s no doubt that the movie fell short of the 1984 film. And while the female-led cast was undeniably talented, the movie was ironically slammed for leaning too hard on comic relief. Overall, it lacked a healthy balance of comedy, science, and action. Furthermore, the movie didn’t have a strong enough plot, or a convincing villain. All of this led to Sony following it up with a direct sequel to Ghostbusters 2, essentially erasing the 2016 remake from the franchise’s timeline.

RoboCop (2014)

Robocop (1987) is hailed today as one of the best depictions of a robot character in film. The original Robocop managed to balance its heavy themes of humanity, morality, and consumerism. Moreover, this was done with a healthy dose of action and satire. The 2014 remake’s lack of satire was heavily criticized, completely missing the mark of the original classic. The remake also had a PG-13 rating that didn’t allow it to explore the themes of violence.

“I’ve only regretted one thing [throughout] my whole career,” she said. “…I remember Chadwick Boseman had dropped a video shortly before he passed, and I thought he was training for a movie. You know, some people really get into the roles… And he had posted — he was telling people to stay inside. And I had said, ‘Man, you need to stay inside,’ or something like that. [But] it was a joke and, of course, I didn’t know anything about his cancer or anything, and you know, I riffed on him.”

Unfortunately, some social media users have taken issue with the film and have called for a full-scale boycott of the sci-fi adventure. The reasoning for the Dune 2 boycott is fairly niche, however, and unlikely to hold a great impact on the film’s profitability. Still, it’s worth examining, as the issue ties-in to a significant global conflict which has already cost many actors their jobs. Here’s a look into why some fans are demanding a Dune 2 boycott.

The Boycott Centers On A November 2023 SNL Sketch

Dune 2 lead Timothée Chalamet hosted an episode of Saturday Night Live back in November, which saw him taking on a number of roles in comedy sketches throughout the evening. One pre-recorded sketch, headed by one of SNL‘s in-house comedy troupes Please Don’t Destroy, centered on Chalamet’s character planning to leap from a ledge to his death. The trio behind Please Don’t Destroy, portraying fictionalized versions of themselves, see Chalamet as he prepares to leap and attempt to stop him from doing so, asking him if there’s anything in his life worth living for. The punchline of the sketch is that Chalamet’s character is an aspiring musician, though his music, which he proceeds to play over a Bluetooth speaker as he teeters on the edge of a ledge, is all terrible.

While most of the punchlines in the sketch come and go with little controversy, one joke which references the Palestinian political group Hamas has received negative press from users on social media platforms such as TikTok and Reddit. The joke in question sees Chalamet asking onlookers to share his music on Instagram, and explaining that his band is named Hamas (pronounced hay-mis, but spelled H-A-M-A-S) prompting one member of Please Don’t Destroy to shout, “Yeah dude I’m not sharing a song by Hamas on Instagram!”
