Post Malone Drops $2M On One Of A Kind “Magic: The Gathering” Card

Post Malone is now the proud owner of the One Ring Magic: The Gathering card. In March, Wizards of the Coast released a Lord of the Rings card set for their massively popular competitive card game. Within this crossover collection was the One Ring, based on the One Ring of Power from the iconic fantasy series. The One Ring card is truly unique – a one-of-one, serialized, foil-printed card. Furthermore, it was placed into a random Collector Booster pack somewhere in the world.

The cards were officially launched on June 23. Within hours, bounties worth millions of dollars were offered for the retrieval of the One Ring. Within a week, the card had been found by an anonymous collector in Canada. The card was subsequently graded at Mint 9 and resale offers, also in the millions, began flooding in. The most prominent of these was a reseller in Spain who offered $2 million plus an all-expenses trip to Europe. However, the One Ring has instead landed in the realm of men, with a humble bard by the name of Austin Richard Post.

Post Malone Acquires The One Ring

According to a post on X from Brook Trafton, Post Malone has now acquired the One Ring card. Trafton had previously spoken with outlets such as Dexerto anonymously through his PR presentation, The Notable Group. However, Trafton went public to share the news of the sale to the acclaimed musician. “This is my dream come true, meeting @PostMalone and him buying the One Ring card from me is literally a moment straight out of a fairytale. @PostMalone @wizards_magic you’ve changed my life. Things like this don’t happen to people like me. Forever grateful 🙏 ✨ #mtg #onering,” Trafton wrote on X, also sharing a video of him meeting Malone and safely delivering the card.

Furthermore, Trafton is now $2 million richer, although an article from Polygon suggests that the sale will be taxed at around 49% by the Canadian government. However, it’s a very special moment for the MTG community and Trafton himself. “This kind of thing doesn’t happen to people like me,” Trafton told Dexerto last month. “I think this whole collaboration, including the hunt, brought a lot of good to the MTG community. It brought new players and brought back some of the old ones. The set is fun to play and collect. I hope they continue to bring more of these collaborations and more of these hunts,” he added.

Post Malone Just Bought The Viral, 1-Of-1 ‘Magic: The Gathering’ Card That’s Been Valued At Over $2 Million

Post Malone is a noted Magic: The Gathering fan: He teamed up with the long-running card game for a promotion in 2021, at which time Wizards Of The Coast Head of Franchise Marketing Nathan Stewart said, “You’d be hard-pressed to find a bigger fan of Magic: The Gathering than Post Malone.” That indeed seems to be true, as he just bought one of the most important cards in the franchise’s history.

On June 20, MTG released its The Lord Of The Rings: Tales Of Middle-Earth set, and what’s especially notable here is the holographic The One Ring card, of which only one was made. The card was found later that month, but even before that, it drew offers of over $2 million. Now, the person who found the card has cashed out, by selling it to, of course, Posty.

The guy who found the card, a Canadian named Brook Trafton, shared a video of himself meeting up with Post to sell the rapper the card. He wrote in his tweet, “This is my dream come true, meeting @PostMalone and him buying the One Ring card from me is literally a moment straight out of a fairytale. @PostMalone @wizards_magic you’ve changed my life. Things like this don’t happen to people like me. Forever grateful #mtg #onering.”

It’s not clear how much Malone spent on the card, but if it was anywhere near the card’s valuation, this transaction did indeed change Trafton’s life.

Malone has poured some serious money into MTG: last year, he spent $800K on what was then the game’s most expensive card. Malone, by the way, is depicted on his own official MTG card.

Post Malone Will Play ‘Magic: The Gathering’ With A Lucky Fan For $10K

Post Malone‘s love for geeky games like Pokemon and Magic: The Gathering is no secret. Last year, he announced his partnership with MTG creators Wizards Of The Coast to promote the return of Friday Night Magic, a promotional campaign for the popular fantasy card game, promising “some cool stuff” to come in the following year. More recently, we discovered just what that “cool stuff” would entail. During a live stream next Friday, August 5, Post will select one viewer to fly to Los Angeles to play a one-on-one MTG match with him for $100,000.

Pardon me while I dig out and dust off my deck.

The actual match will take place on August 11 at 6 pm local time and stream via the Whatnot app. To enter, fans will need to download the app, create an account, and tune into the live stream on Friday. The winner will be randomly selected. According to the event website, no previous experience is required as MTG champion Reid Duke will coach the competitor ahead of the match (although, let’s face it; it’ll probably help to know what you’re doing ahead of time).

For the past month, Post has been hosting livestreams on Twitch, playing the battle royale-hero shooter Apex Legends and giving money to charity. Looks like mom was wrong about not being able to make a career out of playing video games — too bad I believed her, eh?

Post Malone Turns His ‘Magic: The Gathering’ Habit Into A Collab With The Game’s Creators

Post Malone apparently loves turn-of-the-millennium-era trading card games. Back in February, the “One Right Now” crooner teamed up with Nintendo’s monster-collecting juggernaut to celebrate Pokémon Day, the 25th anniversary of the release of the original video game turned card game turned name-an-industry-and-Pikachu-has-probably-dominated-it brand. Now, he’s shuffling in a new deck of cards alongside Wizards of the Coast to promote the return of Friday Night Magic, a program propagating the play of the popular game, Magic: The Gathering.

More than 8,000 stores will participate worldwide as Wizards promises more events, promotions, partnerships, and online experiences coming in 2022. While details remain relatively sparse at the moment, a press release quoted Posty, who said, “I’m obsessed with Magic: The Gathering. This is really a dream come true. We’ll be doing some cool stuff so keep an eye out.”

Meanwhile, Wizards of the Coast Head of Franchise Marketing Nathan Stewart said, “You’d be hard-pressed to find a bigger fan of Magic: The Gathering than Post Malone. As a fan for years, he knows just how much Friday Night Magic means to players. We’re thrilled to collaborate with Posty in ways that will allow his signature style, talent, and love of the game to combine in ways fans will never forget.”

It looks like all Post needs to complete the trifecta will be a similar collaboration with the makers of Yu-Gi-Oh! For now, we look forward to seeing what he and Wizards of the Coast come up with for 2022 as we brush up on the latest card releases in anticipation.
