Lil Nas X’s New Song Finds Himself Asking ‘Where Do We Go Now?’ After Taking The World By Storm

Lil Nas X has the world talking. His latest video, “J Christ” has been met with praise by fans, as well as controversy from Christian conservatives (as was expected). This weekend, the pop and hip-hop hitmaker is set to drop his documentary Long Live Montero, which will give fans a look at his rise to fame, coming out, and handling scrutiny from the public. Ahead of the documentary, Lil Nas X has shared a new song, “Where Do We Go Now?,” written just for the film.

On the song, which was produced by Omer Fedi and Blake Slatkin, Lil Nas X finds himself wondering what’s next. He’s had an impressive run as a gamechanger in the mainstream music landscape, however, seems to be grappling with the mixed emotions that come with fame.

“Where do we go now? / We’ve seen everything we had to see / We figured it out, my love / So where are we goin’? / So where do we go now? / We did everything so endlessly / And only to feel undone / So where are we goin’?,” he sings on the song’s chorus.

The song serves as a bridge between Lil Nas X’s debut Montero era, and the world he’s creating with his imminent second album.

You can listen to “Where Do We Go Now?” above.

Long Live Montero will be available for streaming on Max beginning 1/27.

Lil Nas X Had A Graphic Response To An Article Incorrectly Identifying His Mother As Somebody He’s Never Heard Of

Lil Nas X begged to be called by his name on his single, “MONTERO.” Now, he is asking that the courtesy be extended to his parents. Although Lil Nas X has no problem dismissing attacks on his name (hi, Dave Chappelle), he doesn’t hold back regarding family. Yesterday (January 4), People Magazine learned that the hard way when it misidentified Lil Nas X’s mother.

After getting wind of the publisher’s inaccurate piece on the rapper’s life, he hopped on his official X (formerly Twitter) page to set the record straight. Fans are very familiar with Lil Nas X’s father, Robert Stafford, having attended many events with his famous son. Stafford has even clapped back at a few celebs over their disgusting comments. However, Lil Nas X’s mother remains a mystery.

So when People incorrectly claimed (in a now-deleted article that has been archived here) Lil Nas X’s mother’s name was Shawnita Hathaway, he slammed them. “Y’all just be creating people. cuz who the hell is Shawnita Hathaway? I did not come out that lady p*ssy,” Lil Nas X wrote.

Back in 2021, when rumors circulated that Lil Nas X refused to help his mother had fallen on hard times, Stafford took to his Instagram to shut down the reports with a statement (seen here).

During an interview with Vanity Fair, Lil Nas X opened up about his relationship with her mother. “I never really talk about my mom. She’s an addict, so we don’t have the closest relationship. Even trying to get her better — things didn’t quite work out. But there’s still love… The biggest surprise of becoming globally famous? On the outside, everybody loves you — but on the inside, everything [feels] the same,” said the musician.

The long-awaited release date for Lil Nas X’s tour documentary, Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero, is closer than ever. The film, which premiered at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival, is coming to HBO and Max at the end of the month, according to The Hollywood Reporter. It’ll debut on HBO at 8pm ET on January 27, hitting the Max streaming platform at the same time. The film is directed by Zac Manuel and Carlos López Estrada (whose credits include Blindspotting and Raya And The Last Dragon).

The film’s 2023 premiere at TIFF was actually delayed due to a bomb threat against the festival; however, organizers said that the threat was general, not directed at Lil Nas or his film. The screening went ahead with additional security, and currently holds a 75% score on Rotten Tomatoes with eight critics reviews.

The Long Live Montero Tour was Lil Nas’ first headlining tour, running from September 6, 2022 to March 26, 2023. According to the TouringData page on Twitter, the tour generated over $7 million in revenue after 21 shows, selling around 100,000 tickets. The documentary follows Nas on the tour and sees him talking about his place in the music business as a Black and queer performer.

Nas is preparing for the release of his second album with a rollout playing on the accusations of devil worship prompted by his debut.

A Bomb Threat Delayed Lil Nas X’s Documentary Premiere At The 2023 Toronto International Film Festival, According To Organizers

Through his Grammy Award-winning music and several racy photoshoots posted on social media, Lil Nas X has shared parts of his life with fans. His new documentary, Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero, directed by Carlos López Estrada and Zac Manuel, is another look into superstar life. But the project’s 2023 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) world premiere almost didn’t happen.

According to Variety, on Saturday, September 9, local authorities notified organizers that they had received a bomb threat in relation to the event. To ensure the safety of the confirmed attendees, fans, and event staff, the screening, set to take place at Roy Thomson Hall, was delayed as they investigated the claims further.

A representative from TIFF shared a statement with the outlet confirming that the incident was handled with care. Read the full statement below.

Earlier this evening, we were made aware by the Toronto Police Service of an investigation in the vicinity of the red carpet for the ‘Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero’ screening. Our standard security measures remained in place during this time, and the screening commenced with a slight delay. To our knowledge, this was a general threat and not directed at the film or the artist.

Fortunately, the screening took place after the assessment was complete. Lil Nas X, alongside his father and two nephews, walked the red carpet before taking their seats inside the venue.

The 2023 Toronto International Film Festival is set to take place until September 17 at various venues. Tickets for the Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero screenings are on sale now. Find more information here.

Lil Nas X TIFF Premiere Delayed By 30 Minutes Due To Bomb Threat

The premiere of Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero at the Toronto International Film Festival was briefly delayed on September 9. As Lil Nas X arrived at the screening, event organizers were informed that a bomb threat had been received. Furthermore, law enforcement revealed that the threat had been explicitly made against Lil Nas X. This was due to his status as a Black queer artist. However, the threat was deemed to be a hoax. As a result, the screening was able to go ahead after a 30-minute delay. This is the first major incident to affect TIFF specifically. The festival has introduced new security over the past few years. This was in response to incidents at other festivals and in the wider Toronto area.

“Earlier this evening, we were made aware by the Toronto Police Service of an investigation in the vicinity of the red carpet for the Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero screening. Our standard security measures remained in place during this time and the screening commenced with a slight delay. To our knowledge, this was a general threat and not directed at the film or the artist.” A TIFF spokesperson told Variety. The latter portion of this was later disputed, stating that the threat was made against Lil Nas X specifically.

Lil Nas X Hopes Film Will Help Change The World

The bomb threat is a perfect example of what Lil Nas is hoping to combat with his film. “I know in my lifetime, while I’m here, I’m going to do my best to make the ceiling unreachable to where we can go as Black queer people. And I mean unreachable as, like, it can go above and beyond. I feel like we live in a generation where Black queer people really control culture. And they’re helping really take the world to the next level. And I think that’s going to have an effect on our youth watching us,” Nas told Variety.

“I think there are a lot of different layers to the film, which is surprising maybe for a music documentary. I think what was really important was that Montero himself was so transparent in his identity and also his journey toward being the fullest version of his identity that he really wanted to be. And I think sharing that journey with us and going on that journey with his family ended up really becoming the heart of the film. But he’s also able to put himself in perspective as a part of a continuum of other Black queer performers who came before him. I think his reflections on those things became the spine and the heart of the film. It became really important to the narrative, and also to how we understand him as more than just an artist, but understand him as a person,” added co-director Zac Manuel.
