Denver Nuggets Take Finals Lead Behind Historic Performances

The NBA Finals have already produced plenty of excitement. The Nuggets dominated Game 1 at home. Nikola Jokić led a dominant blowout with yet another triple-double. However, despite Jokić dropping 41 points, the Heat were able to steal a tight Game 2. Jimmy Butler, Bam Adebayo, and Gabe Vincent were able to help the Heat outlast the Western Conference giants. This led to a hilarious moment where Butler mooned Adebayo at the post-game press conference.

As the series moved to Miami, there were a lot of variables in the air. Many pundits believed that the Heat had finally figured out how to defend Jokić. Furthermore, there was speculation that the Heat simply had the deeper starting roster, with the Nuggets heavily relying on Jokić and Jamal Murray. However, it would all be settled on the court, with the series lead up for grabs. After stealing a game on the road, it was the perfect opportunity for the Heat to take control of the series.

Jokić And Murray Headline Historic Night

Miami took a slim, early lead in the first quarter before the Nuggets battled back to end the first quarter tied at 24. However, Denver began to pull away in the second quarter and entered the half up five, 53-48. Jokić already had a double-double at the half, with 13 points and 11 rebounds. The Nuggets pushed their momentum in the third quarter, extending their lead to 14 entering the final period. The Heat never found a way back into the game and Denver retook the lead in the Finals with a 109-94 victory.

Murray led all scorers with 34 points, adding 10 rebounds and 10 assists. Alongside him was Jokić, who put a 32-point triple-double with 21 rebounds and 10 assists. It made them the first players in NBA history to record 30-point triple-doubles in the same game. Furthermore, they became the first teammates to each record 30 points and 10 assists in the same game since Clyde Drexler and Terry Porter in 1992. Elsewhere, Jokić was making individual history by recording the first 30-20-10 game in NBA Finals history. Furthermore, it’s just the third 30-20-10 game in playoff history after Kareem and Wilt. It was too much Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray for the Miami HEAT in game three as the Denver Nuggets cruised to a 109-94 victory to take a 2-1 lead.

Jokic had 32 points, 21 rebounds, and ten assists, while Murray added 34 points, ten rebounds, and ten assists. The star duo for the Nuggets became the first teammates in NBA Finals History to have 30-point triple-doubles in the same game.

Nuggets’ coach Mike Malone was speaking differently about his team than he did after Game 2. Specifically about Jokic and Murray, Malone said it was “By far, their greatest performance as a duo in their seven years together.”

Assisting the Nuggets duo were Christian Braun, who had an energetic 15 points off the bench, and Aaron Gordon, who added 11 points, ten rebounds and five assists.

For the HEAT, Jimmy Butler had 28 points, Bam Adebayo had 22 points and 17 rebounds, but what was echoing out of the HEAT in postgame was a lack of energy.

“Maybe we’re at home; we think we did something,” Butler said. “I don’t know. It just can’t happen. It won’t happen again. It starts with myself. I have to lock in on the defensive end. I have to go up and get loose balls. I think if I start playing and doing that, then everybody else has to follow suit.”

“I just think sometimes, for us, when we lose a lot of those physical battles, the effort plays, the loose balls, the rebounding battles, that’s our identity,” Head Coach Eric Spoelstra said. “And sometimes, that can affect the flow of the rest of your game. That’s not an excuse. I think the thing that we’ve proven over and over and over is we can win and find different ways to win regardless of whether we have confidence, regardless of whether the ball is going in.”

The HEAT will get another shot at the Nuggets when Game 4 tips off on Friday from Miami.

Aaron Gordon Gifts Jamal Murray A Diamond Pendant

Aaron Gordon has been a key contributor for the Denver Nuggets this season. Playing, and starting 68 games in the regular season, Gordon averaged 16.3 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 3.0 assists per game. Furthermore, he has started 16 playoff games for the Nuggets this year, averaging 13.2 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 2.4 assists. Gordon was the #4 pick in the 2014 NBA Draft.

Meanwhile, Jamal Murray has been a Nuggets superstar. Appearing in 65 regular season games, Murray put up 20 points, 4 rebounds, and 6.2 assists. However, Murray has come into his own in the playoffs. He is averaging 27.2 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 6.4 assists through 16 games. That includes three 30-point games against the Lakers in the Western Conference Finals. Now, Gordon has reportedly gotten Murray a special gift to commemorate their reaching the NBA Finals. Murray was the #7 pick in the 2016 NBA Draft.

Aaron Gordon Gifts Jamal Murray Diamond Pendant

According to TMZ, Gordon gifted Murray a diamond pendant ahead of the NBA Finals, which began on June 1. The pendant is shaped like a bow and arrow, a nod to Murray’s sharp shooting and signature archer celebration. Furthermore, the pendant included Murray’s initials and his jersey number, 27. Gordon had it done at Mile High Jewelers in Denver, with an expedited turnaround so it would be ready for the Finals. However, even with an expedited turnaround, the piece still took ten days to make. The pendant includes ten carats of white and blue WS diamonds.

“[Aaron] wanted to show his appreciation for his outstanding play, effort and being a great teammate/brother during his time in Denver,” the jeweler explained. Gordon and Murray have been teammates since 2021 when Gordon was traded to Denver by the Orlando Magic. Gordon still has three years left on his contract with the Nuggets. Jamal Murray has absolutely popped off in recent games. He exceeded 30 points in three of the four games against the Lakers, including back-to-back 37-point games. The tighter the Lakers guarded Nikola Jokić, the better Murray played. His continued success will be absolutely crucial as the Nuggets turn their attention to the NBA Finals. They will face either the Heat or Celtics, with the Heat currently up 3-1 in the Eastern Conference Finals.

However, a months-old interview with Murray is going viral in the wake of his recent success on the court. In a laidback interview while playing NBA 2K, Murray shared his thoughts on who the greatest players to ever the grace the NBA were. While many of his answers could be construed as mainstream or “bandwagon”, they clearly show that Murray had a good eye for the game.

Murray’s thoughts came during an interview with YouTuber James Rush. However, the interview did not make waves at the time and still only have 3400 views at the time of writing. Jamal Murray is chomping at the bit heading into the NBA Playoffs. The Nuggets guard was sidelined all of last season after a knee injury. Now, Murray wants to make a positive impact on the team after such a long absence. However, it seems the injury bug will not leave Murray alone. Murray has been dealing with a nagging thumb injury on his shooting hand. Although the injury has admittedly bothered Murray. Nuggets fans may have some good news on the way.

Mike Singer of the Denver Post sent out this tweet on Murray’s thumb injury. “Jamal Murray said his thumb is still bothering him and it’s definitely still on his mind when he’s shooting. But he was a full participant today and should be a full go.” It doesn’t seem like the thumb injury will have Murray sidelined when the playoffs begin this weekend. The Nuggets are the number one overall seed in the Western Conference. The team has flexed its dominance all season behind MVP candidate Nikola Jokic.

The team is ready to begin their quest for a title. However, they still don’t know who their first-round opponent will be. The Timberwolves will meet the winner of Thunder-Pelicans to decide the final playoff spot. With all the talks of upsets in the Western Conference, the Nuggets haven’t been mentioned in those discussions. One seeds are not normally sent home in the first round of the NBA Playoffs. However, just ask the Dallas Mavericks. It can be done.

Whoever their opponent may be, the Nuggets will not take them likely. Murray became a playoff superstar during the bubble year. The Nuggets and Jazz gave fans one of the best playoff series of all time that year. So having Jamal Murray at full strength will be massive for the Nuggets.
