DMX Has Been Given His Own Day By The New York State Senate

After holding a memorial for DMX on Saturday, featureingappearances from Kanye West and the Sunday Service Choir, Swizz Beatz, and more, the late rapper’s family held a Homegoing Celebration for him on Sunday. Just like the previous service, Sunday’s in-person gathering was limited strictly to close friends and family, while DMX’s fans were able to watch it through a livestream on BET. But the latter at least had some good news.

According to Revolt, Erica Ford, the co-founder of Life Camp, an organization established to prevent gun violence, and Priscilla Echi, a Westchester community activist, revealed at the service that the New York State Senate had officially declared December 18th, DMX’s birthday, as Earl “DMX” Simmons Day. The resolution, which sought to mourn “the untimely death of DMX, legendary New York rap icon and talented actor,” was originally introduced on April 20 by Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins and Senator Jamaal T. Bailey.

“His lyrics were rapped on the Senate floor by Senator Jamal Bailey who introduced a resolution in his honor. He also has proclamations from Mayor Spano and Mayor Shawyn Patterson Howard,” Echi revealed during Sunday’s service. “From the governor’s office, we have the flag that was flying the day that he died to be presented to his family,” she said. “We have a citation from the governor’s office for his oldest son and one for his father.”

Lindsey Graham Says Systemic Racism Can’t Exist Because Obama Was President

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) argued that systemic racism cannot exist in America and that the elections of President Barack Obama and Vice President Kamala Harris are the proof. His comments came in response to President Joe Biden, who said that the killing of George Floyd revealed systemic racism in America.

“No, not in my opinion,” Graham declared. “We just elected a two-term African-American president; the vice president is of African-American and Indian descent. So our systems are not racist.”

Graham added that he believes the result of Derek Chauvin’s trial to be just, but that the officer is simply an example of a “bad actor” and not a flaw in the system.

He explained: “America is not a racist country. Within every society, you have bad actors. The Chauvin trial was a just result.”

While calling America the “best place on the planet,” he admitted that it is a “work in progress.”

Chauvin was found guilty of second-degree murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter in the killing of Floyd.

“In order to deliver real change and reform, we can and we must do more to reduce the likelihood that tragedies like this will ever happen and occur again,” Biden said after the verdict. “And this takes acknowledging and confronting, head-on, systemic racism and the racial disparities that exist in policing and in our criminal justice system more broadly.”

Macklemore Reveals That He Relapsed On Drugs During COVID-19 Pandemic

Macklemore recently revealed that he relapsed on drugs during the COVID-19 pandemic while talking with Dax Shepard on the Armchair Expert podcast. He spoke about his struggle with addiction but reaffirmed that he is still proud of the progress he has made.

“I really, really resonated with the episode where you talked about your relapse,” he told Shepard during the interview. “I Justin Timberlake’ed it. I cried. I maybe had a tear. We’re not exactly sure. But it was within two months of my COVID relapse, and the disease of addiction is crazy … It made me feel, as someone that had relapsed again, like a month or two before, that I’m not alone.”

The rapper also explained that fame made it harder for him to focus on his rehabilitation throughout his career.

“One of the things that always stuck with me from rehab is that whatever you put in front of recovery will be the first thing that you lose,” he says in the video. “It wasn’t just a relapse anymore — it was the sneaky, lying, I’m getting pills and I’m not telling anybody.”

A decade into his recovery, he says that he is still proud of the work he has done: “I’ve spent most of the last 11 years in recovery, and it’s made me who I am. I’ve compromised my life and other people around me, I’ve done things that I’m not proud of, but I do have that foundational level of 10 years of recovery, and I’m fucking proud of that.”

Swizz Beatz, Russell Simmons, & More Speak At Private DMX Funeral Service

DMX’s private funeral service was held in New York, Sunday, and featured speeches from a number of noteworthy guests including Swizz Beatz, Louis Farrakhan, and more.

“DMX was definitely not an artist to me. He was a brother, he was a friend. The key thing is he maintained his passion, he maintained his strength,” Beatz said at the event, according to the NY Post. “He was barking and howling on stage to hide the real things that he was going through. He was a sweetheart. He was the most giving and loving person that I ever met, and I always wanted to protect him. I felt it was my job to protect him.”

The event also featured a video tribute from Def Jam Records co-founder Russell Simmons.

“I had been through struggles,” he said. “So, I had all these experiences so I could relate to this man, and I know I was very lucky to have escaped. And this brother was going through what I had been through, and I knew it.

“And I did very little,” Simmons added. “And I’ll never forget that I didn’t do much to help.”

Farrakhan also spoke during the event: “DMX is who he was and who he is, and the reason he has affected the people in the hip-hop genre and human beings across the globe is because he was genuine.”

Earlier this weekend, a public service was held at Brooklyn’s Barclay’s Center.

Beyoncé & Jay-Z, Boddy Shmurda & More Attend DMX’s Brooklyn Memorial Service

Members of the hip-hop community and fans alike were torn apart when the devastating news of DMX’s passing was confirmed. The rap trailblazer passed away after suffering a heart attack the week prior, eventually losing the fight for his life while in the hospital. Since his passing, makeshift memorials and tributes have erupted all across the country to pay ode to the beloved New York emcee.

His memorial service was announced last week and set to take place at the Barclays Center on Saturday (April 24), exclusive to friends and family of the late rapper. A testament to his true star power, attendees spotted at his Celebration of Life Memorial service included big names like Beyoncé & Jay-Z, Busta Rhymes, and Bobby Shmurda.

Made very clear in advance before the celebration, the in-person event at the multi-purpose arena in Brooklyn was restricted to just family and close friends of X. The ceremony kicked off with Kanye West’s Sunday Service choir and followed by remembrances from family, including his 15 children, and his friends.

Rumors circulated that Swizz Beatz had contacted Ye prior to the service to attend the ceremony if possible. He and X have previously collaborated together and were well-acquainted with each other, so it’s quite clear why he the choir director was tapped to participate.

“Our father is a king,” one of DMX’s sons, Xavier, said at the memorial service. “Our father is an icon.” Hip hop’s titular power couple Beyoncé & Jay-Z were among the guests spotted at the occasion, captured entering the venue in all-black attire.

Others in attendance included Bobby Shmurda and Busta Rhymes, who gave each other a warm embrace and chat after the memorial. An organizer for the event also noted that Fabolous, A$AP Ferg, and Rowdy Rebel were all present at the service.

Although this memorial service was exclusive to close associates of X, he is set to be honored in his hometown of Yonkers, at the upcoming Universal Hip Hop Museum, and many other spaces where fans of the Ruff Ryder can celebrate his life.
