Dillon Brooks continued his beef with LeBron James on Saturday night. The Grizzlies’ forward had previously called LeBron “old” among other remarks after the Grizzlies’ game 2 win. Brooks also said he didn’t respect to LeBron because the Laker hadn’t dropped 40 points on the Grizzlies.
However, the in-game beef only lasted 19 minutes. Just 17 seconds into the second half, Brooks was called for a flagrant 2 on LeBron and ejected. Brooks appeared to hit LeBron in the groin, similar to a foul that saw James Harden ejected from a Sixers game days prior. The Grizzlies eventually lost 111-101. It’s the latest in a line of recent flagrant fouls around the NBA playoffs. Harden’s teammate Joel Embiid was called for a flagrant 1 in the same game. Meanwhile, Draymond Green was called for a flagrant 2 for stomping on Domantas Sabonis.
Brooks Dodges Suspension

No further reasoning was given for why Brooks was not given further punishment. Brooks has been ejected three times this season, tied for most in the league. He was also ejected for a flagrant 2 during the 2022 NBA Playoffs. Brooks has also missed three games due to suspension this season. Two of those were automatic suspensions triggered by technical foul accumulations. He led the league in technical fouls this season with a total of 18. Brooks earned suspensions after his 16th and 18th technical. However, he was also suspended one game for hitting Donovan Mitchell in the groin. Safe to say, Brooks is not exactly a “clean” player.
The decision has once again raised questions about the NBA’s decision-making, especially in regard to these playoffs. Draymond Green received a one-game suspension for his flagrant 2. While Green stomping on Sabonis was a more impactful incident, the NBA handed down a suspension due to Green’s “dirty player” reputation. Some have asked why the same isn’t being applied to Brooks’ past too. However, the Grizzlies will likely be glad to have the defensive stalwart on the court as they attempt to even the series. Similar to James Harden’s ejection earlier in the week, it was all due to Brooks hitting LeBron in the groin. Brooks played just 19 minutes, putting up 7 points, 2 rebounds, and 1 steal. That left the Grizzlies short-handed in the backcourt, a crucial issue as they tried to bounce back from a rough first half. However, they were able to rely on Morant. Returning from injury, Morant put up 45 points, shooting 50% from the field and 60% from three. He also added 13 assists in a great outing for the team leader. However, it just wasn’t enough. Anthony Davis scored 31 and LeBron put 25 as the Lakers cruised to a 111-101 win. The scoreline made the game seem closer than it was.
The Grizzlies scored just nine points in the first quarter and trailed by 16 at the half. While the second half was much better for them, they were never able to truly threaten the Lakers. Rui Hachimura had 16 off the bench, outscoring the entirety of the Grizzlies’ bench (12). However, after the game, LeBron dismissed any notion of beef between him and Brooks. “I didn’t make a statement,” James said. “I’ve been doing this too long. I’m not making any statements. We had the opportunity to come home and play well on our home floor, and we did that. No statement was made. We just wanted to play well, and we got a win. I don’t need to make statements.”

Let’s start with Xavier Tillman. The 2020 second-round pick out of Michigan State absolutely showed up after his dismal game one. In 32 minutes, Tillman put up 22 points and 13 rebounds while shooting 10-for-13. Meanwhile, Jaren Jackson Jr. showcased why he was Defensive Player of the Year with 18 points, 9 rebounds, and 3 blocks. Also laying down dominant defense was Dillon Brooks, who helped hold LeBron to just 1-for-8 three-point shooting. Also helping the Grizzlies were poor nights from D’Angelo Russell and James Vanderbilt. Both were Lakers starters who played at least 20 minutes and put up less than 10 points. However, Rui Hachimura put up 20 from the bench. In comparison, the Grizzlies’ bench scored a combined 24.
The Grizzlies led by 14 at the half and weathered a Lakers comeback attempt down the stretch to win by 10. Tillman led the Grizzlies with 22 points, while LeBron led all scorers with 28. However, despite posting a double-double with 12 rebounds, LeBron was a cold shooter thanks to the stifling Grizzlies D. LeBron went 12-for-23 and 1-for-8 from three. Additionally, he shot just four free throws as Memphis made sure to keep him away from the line. With Morant’s return uncertain, the Grizzlies did what they needed to do in order to mitigate his absence. However, the big question is that if they can do without Morant, what heights can they reach with him present? The teams will meet again on Saturday for a pivotal Game 3.

Coca-Cola has reportedly pulled its Powerade advertisements featuring Ja Morant after the Memphis Grizzlies’ star displayed a gun on Instagram Live while in a strip club. According to The Drum, the company has made ads featuring Morant private on its social platforms. The Grizzlies have also suspended Morant indefinitely. Glendale police have said there is not enough evidence to pursue criminal charges against Morant for the incident.
While the Grizzlies haven’t given an exact return date for Morant, they’ve said he’s going to miss at least six games. This would put him on track to come back on March 17 in San Antonio. Grizzlies coach Taylor Jenkins provided an update on the 23-year-old’s timeline on Thursday.

“We have had conversations in the past trying to guide him and help him continue to evolve as a person and a player,” Jenkins said. “Obviously, this came to a head the other day, so we put this process into action.” He added: “There are definitely steps that are going to have to be met — personally and professionally — as he deals with some stuff personally to get better.”
Quickly after the incident, Morant released an apology for his behavior. “I take full responsibility for my actions last night,” the statement read. “I’m sorry to my family, teammates, coaches, fans, partners, the city of Memphis and the entire Grizzlies organization for letting you down. I’m going to take some time away to get help and work on learning better methods of dealing with stress and my overall well-being.”
While Coca-Cola appears to be backing away from Morant, one of his other biggest sponsors, Nike, has already released a statement in support of the young star. “We appreciate Ja’s accountability and that he is taking the time to get the help he needs. We support his prioritization of his well-being,” the company said, according to ESPN.
