For the first time in franchise history, the Cleveland Cavaliers are off to a perfect 9-0 start, following a resilient 131-122 win over the New Orleans Pelicans on Tuesday night.
Cleveland faced a tough challenge, trailing by as many as 16 points in the second quarter. However, the Cavs stormed back with a 23-11 run to close the first half, tying the score at 59. Donovan Mitchell then took charge in the third quarter, dropping 29 points and leading the Cavs to a 40-29 advantage that gave them control for the rest of the game.
Cleveland joins an elite group as only the sixth team since 2000-01 to start a season 9-0, with the 2022-23 Milwaukee Bucks being the most recent.
Cleveland has already hit the 130-point mark in four games this season, matching last year’s total and coming just one game shy of the franchise single-season record.
Mitchell scored 20 of his points in the second half. In contrast, Jarrett Allen (16 points, 14 rebounds), Caris LeVert (16 points, six rebounds, six assists), and Evan Mobley (15 points, nine rebounds, three assists, three blocks) each made significant contributions.
After the win, Allen remarked, “It shows how we are willing to fight for each other, to go any length to get the win together.”

The list of players declaring interest in playing for Team USA is continuing to grow. In October, Joel Embiid formally announced that he will be fighting for a place on the American Olympic basketball team. Embiid has been a major target of Team USA in the run-up to the Paris Games. However, the reigning NBA MVP had taken his time choosing between his dual nationalities of American and French. However, Embiid opted for Team USA after a meeting with executive director Grant Hill in Colorado this week.
Sources told ESPN that Embiid was inspired by the litany of former stars who have suited up for Team USA. Furthermore, Embiid wanted to win a gold medal in front of his son Arthur, who was born an American citizen in 2020. “It’s exciting for USA Basketball that Joel Embiid wants to represent the United States. Joel and I have had several conversations about his goals and I’m looking forward to continuing that dialogue knowing that one of those goals is to represent USA Basketball next summer in Paris,” Grant Hill said in a statement.
The Louisville Cardinals had a big-time showdown with the 10th-ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish this past Saturday (October 7). Louisville’s program is having a bit of a resurgence as they were coming into that contest undefeated and ranked as the 25th-best team in the country. They wound up taking down the visitors, 33-20, staying unbeaten at 6-0. It is another monumental win for the school and two of the brightest talents from the state were in attendance. Louisville-born rapper Jack Harlow, and Cardinal alum, Donovan Mitchell, were repping their squad.

According to ESPN, the Cleveland Cavaliers were issued tests for performance-enhancing drugs. Mitchell joked about it online.

Donovan Mitchell Jersey Retirement
During the interview with Spears, Mitchell was asked about having his jersey retired by the Jazz. Mitchell was quick to say he doesn’t deserve it. After just five years with the team, Donovan Mitchell acknowledges he simply didn’t achieve enough.
“I don’t think I did enough,” Mitchell said. “I hold myself to a high standard. Now, other people may feel that it should. I’d be happy and forever grateful, honored and blessed for sure for that to happen. But I don’t think I’ve done enough in five years to have my jersey up there with Karl [Malone], John [Stockton], Pistol Pete [Maravich] and Darrell Griffith. I got a long way in my career to go to continue to be better.”
