Dirk Nowitzki On Relationship With Dwyane Wade: “I Wouldn’t Say We’re Friends”

Dallas Mavericks legend Dirk Nowitzki reflected on his relationship with longtime Miami Heat rival, Dwyane Wade, during a recent interview with Marc Stein on The Saturday Stein Line.

“I wouldn’t say we’re friends,” the former NBA Most Valuable Player said. “I think there’s a mutual sense of respect for each other’s career and obviously were cordial.” Nowitzki further clarified: “There’s no bad blood, obviously, anymore. We all moved on, things were said on both sides or done that neither side liked, but that’s part of competition at the highest level.”

Joining Wade and Nowitzki in the latest Hall of Fame class are Tony Parker, Gregg Popovich, Pau Gasol, and Manu Ginobili. “I’m both humbled and honored to have made it to basketball heaven,” Wade said after the class was announced.

In a separate interview with The Dallas Morning News, Nowitzki expressed his excitement to be joining the star-studded class. “The fact that I’m going in with Tony and Manu and Pau is wonderful,” Nowitzki told the outlet. “We competed internationally against each other for a long, long time, and then obviously some huge games in the NBA, so it’s kind of great how that worked.”

When asked about Wade, Nowitzki elaborated on how they’ve reached the aforementioned “cordial” state of their relationship. “We sat together with his family during one of the dinners, and we talked,” Nowitzki said. “And so I think it’s going to be great. I think there’s a lot of mutual respect there now. I know we’ve gone through some stuff in our careers, but at the end of the day not everybody you compete against at the highest level can be friends. It’s just not how it works. I think there were some things said on both sides that weren’t liked by the other side, but you know what? This is 20-something years later now, almost. So there’s really no hard feelings, and it’s gonna be a fun week with him.” The 2023 enshrinement ceremony will be held on Saturday, August 12.

Because just two weeks earlier, the Mavericks were on the losing end of the biggest NBA Playoffs series upset in the league’s history.

2007 marked the first and only time that an eight seed has taken down a one seed in the NBA Playoffs. Before they were the Golden State Franchise you know today, the Warriors were once mighty underdogs. The Warriors seemed to have everything going against them back in 07. Including having to play a future MVP winner. However, that didn’t stop the underdog from pulling off the impossible. The Warriors stunned the Mavericks in six games sending the one-seed home early. A series that still seems to be on the mind of Nowitzki.

The Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame announced today the selection of five coaches and seven players as Finalists from the North American and Women’s Screening committees for NBA All-Star Weekend 2023. The Finalists will subsequently be presented to the Honors Committee for consideration as members of the Class of 2023.

The North American Committee finalists feature Gene Bess, Pau Gasol, David Hixon, Gene Keady, Dirk Nowitzki, Tony Parker, Gregg Popovich, and Dwyane Wade. The Women’s Committee finalists feature Jennifer Azzi, Gary Blair, Becky Hammon, and Marian Washington.

“Eleven first-time nominees make up this historic group of Class of 2023 finalists,” said Jerry Colangelo, Chairman of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. “It is an incredible honor to be named a Finalist for the Hall of Fame, and their recognition as a Finalist is evidence of the legendary accomplishments and dominance shown throughout their careers. The Class of 2023 will be remembered as one of the most distinguished classes the Hall of Fame will ever see, and we are extremely excited for this unparalleled collection of talent and achievement to be one step closer to Springfield.

The Class of 2023 will be inducted on August 11-12 in Springfield, Massachusetts, the Cradle of Basketball.

However, at 37 years old, there is no doubt that LeBron has shown himself to be one of the best. Overall, it is incredibly tough to be as good as he is at his age. Considering his immense talent, there is no doubt that he has the credentials to speak on the best who have ever done it.

LeBron James Praises Dirk

Recently, James played the Dallas Mavericks on Christmas Day. This happened to fall on the exact same day in which Dirk Nowitzki’s statue was unveiled by the franchise. Dirk is up for Hall of Fame recognition, and LeBron made sure to give the Mavericks legend some flowers.

“It had to be a fadeaway, one leg,” LeBron said about Dirk’s statue. “Had to be. No question about it. Dirk is a legend, he’s a icon. [I] Think he’s the greatest international player ever. I put him right there with Manu [Ginóbili].”

The international player debate is one that extends to numerous greats. However, Dirk is definitely up there and we doubt anyone would be mad if you said he was the best. Although, it does seem like Luka Doncic wants to take that crown away from his mentor.

Overall, James knows a lot about Dirk as Nowitzki beat him in the 2011 Finals. That is a series that still haunts LeBron, although it is still cool to see him give his opponent from that series his due praise.

Hall Of Fame Shortlist: Dwyane Wade, Nowitzki, & More

According to ClutchPoints, Dirk Nowitzki and Dwyane Wade are being considered as First Ballot Hall of Famers for the 2023 HOF class. There are some other massive names here, including Gregg Popovich, Tony Parker, and Pau Gasol.

All five of these men deserve to be in the Hall of Fame, which makes this latest class extremely stacked. However, these men will only know if they’ve made it as of April 1st of next year. If they do make it, the induction ceremony will be on August 12th.
