Michael Jackson died 15 years ago. Yet still, the crowned King of Pop’s music continues to dominate streaming platforms. That is sure to spike after the late singer’s biopic hits theaters. However, according to reports, Michael has been delayed.
According to Deadline, the highly anticipated pictured directed by Antoine Fuqua has officially been pushed back to 2025.
Originally Michael was slated to be released around Easter 2025 (estimated around April 18-20). Now, based on the outlet’s exclusive report Michael has been locked in for October 3, 2025. Deadline speculates that the delay was a strategy call to get Michael “positioned in the awards corridor next year.” Given that producer Graham King (the Oscar award-winning Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody) is continued to the project, the adjustment makes sense to both die-hard fans of Jackson and film critics alike.
The release dates seems to be the only change to the movie thus far. Universal Pictures remains at the helm of the film’s international production duties. The title role is still held by Michael’s nephew Jaafar Jackson (Jermaine Jackson’s son). Nia Long, Laura Harrier, Miles Teller, and Colman Domingo will also star in the movie as John Branca and John McClain serve in the producers seat with John Logan responsible for the script.
An early synopsis described the project as a “look at the complicated legendary recording artist from his human side to the his public and private struggles.”
A first look at forthcoming film (viewable here) has set supporters’ expectations high.

An upcoming Michael Jackson biopic has found its star in the controversial singer’s nephew, Jafar Jackson, according to Deadline. The film is to be directed by Antoine Fuqua, who most recently directed the Will Smith movie Emancipation and posted the confirmation on Instagram.
Michael is being produced by the Jackson estate and Graham King, who also produced the Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody. That film grossed over $900 million worldwide and was nominated for a Best Picture Oscar. Star Rami Malek won the Best Actor award for his portrayal of Queen frontman Freddie Mercury.
Jafar Jackson is the son of Michael’s older brother Jermaine and is a singer and songwriter in his own right.
The bio has a tricky narrative needle to thread. Obviously, the estate’s involvement offers a layer of authenticity, especially as the estate controls the rights to Jackson’s catalog. However, the estate is also notoriously protective of the late star’s image; this leads to questions of how his more controversial aspects may be depicted.
If the producers decide to delve deeply into the child sexual abuse accusations against Jackson, they might have to do so without the family’s approval — and thus, without the singer’s music. However, judging from the reception of past biopics (they are all the rage right now, aren’t they?), if those thorny topics are avoided, the film could face greater scrutiny and criticism.
The legacy of Michael Jackson will be explored in Antoine Fuqua’s upcoming biopic on the pop star,Michael. However, the question of who would take on the lead role has been subject to speculation.
According to Deadline, Jaafar Jackson, Michael’s nephew, will take on the lead role in the film. Fuqua and Jackson confirmed the news on social media this morning.
“Proud to announce @jaafarjackson as Michael — the motion picture event that explores the journey of the man who became the King of Pop. Coming soon,” the Training Day director shared on Instagram.
Jackson expressed his gratitude for the opportunity afterward, writing,
“I’m humbled and honored to bring my Uncle Michael’s story to life. To all the fans all over the world, I’ll see you soon.”
Jaafar Jackson, the son of Jermaine Jackson, showcased his talents as a singer and dancer on social media in the past, which undoubtedly helped him secure the role.
The upcoming film won’t shy away from exploring some of the grimmer sides of Jackson’s life. From his beginnings as a member of the Jackson 5, Michael will capture the highs and lows of the singer’s career, up until his death from cardiac arrest.
Michael’s estate will also be involved in the film, providing the rights to the singer’s catalog. However, it makes many wonder how this might impact the storyline when it comes to pedophilia allegations and sexual assault.
We’ll keep you posted on anymore details surrounding the upcoming movie.
Well, it looks like the long-awaited Michael Jackson biopic is one step closer to becoming a reality.
According to Deadline, Lionsgate has tapped Antoine Fuqua to direct the heavily anticipated biopic. The upcoming film entitled Michael, WAS written by Gladiator, The Aviator, Hugo writer John Logan and produced by Bohemian Rhapsody producer Graham King.
Fuqua made a statement to Deadline where he talked about the impact Michael Jackson had on him and how it will translate in the film.
“The first films of my career were music videos, and I still feel that combining film and music are a deep part of who I am,” he told the publication. “For me, there is no artist with the power, the charisma, and the sheer musical genius of Michael Jackson. I was influenced to make music videos by watching his work – the first Black artist to play in heavy rotation on MTV. His music and those images are part of my worldview, and the chance to tell his story on the screen alongside his music was irresistible.”
According to Lionsgate, Michael will “explore all aspects of Michael’s life, including his most iconic performances that led him to become the greatest entertainer of all time.” The movie is still in its development stages, and a cast has not been announced yet. However, the studio did say that production will begin sometime this year.
