Adam Silver Talks Expansion Outside United States to Possible Mexico

It seems like NBA Commissioner Adam Silver is thinking globally about the Association, and international expansion is the theme.

“It’s not preordained that we will expand at this time, but I know there’s an enormous amount of interest out there,” Silver told reporters Thursday. “… At some point, we’d like to look outside the United States. In addition to Canada. This may not be the right moment to do that, but I’m thinking long term as well.”

Currently, the Toronto Raptors are the only NBA team that are based outside of the United States. That’s in Canada, for those who don’t have geography in their repertoire. Back in the day, the Memphis Grizzlies were also north of the border, in Vancouver.

But this is far from the only time, the commissioner has hinted at the idea of international expansion. NBC Sports Boston’s Jordan Daly discussed this potential and the idea of Mexico came up.

“Mexico City is easy in terms of, I mean it’s high altitude, it’s 2,000 feet higher than Denver, so that affects the players a bit, but it’s a shorter flight to Mexico City from New York than it is to LA, so … One day, I think that would be incredible to actually expand to a market like Mexico City,” he said.

Silver also discussed the NBA’s international appeal in an international context. Notably, the game is one of the most internationally recognized sports, and the NBA powers that narrative.

“In the meantime, we are playing in Paris in January again,” Silver said. “It is very much a global league, we got players from roughly 40 countries, over a quarter of the players were born outside of the United States, and especially now with digital media, streaming media, you guys know; I’m sure you get fan mail from 200-plus countries, that’s where our games are carried.”

One this is true, any expansion to Europe, Asia, Africa or anywhere in the Eastern Hemisphere would prove too difficult with traveling within the already stacked 82-game season. But we’ll see about Mexico City!

Vince Staples Has A Unique Plan To “Fix” The NBA

Vince Staples has unveiled his plan to “fix” the NBA. Staples’ plan involves dissolving conferences and the G-League, as well as relocating franchises away from places “nobody wants to go.” However, Staples also had more unorthodox ideas. “You got to start an active beef with [LeBron James] because he be doing a lot. And then Adam Silver got to come on and be like, ‘Ay bro, stop that sh-t, LeBron.’ If he just said that in an interview, like he just held a press conference and said, ‘LeBron, stop that sh-t or we coming for you.’ Add some wrestling to it Yeah man, sit down with Bron and say: ‘Bron, I need a favor, bro, I just need you to like throw a chair, bro. I’m sorry but throw that chair across the court after ya’ll lose, bro, and then just take the jersey off,” Staples told Podcast P.

Furthermore, clarification from Staples appeared to imply that he wanted the beef/wrestling aspect to specifically be between Silver and LeBron. “Adam Silver going to be like, ‘ESPN breaking news.’ He going to be on there with Stephen A. Smith early in the morning, like, ‘Hey Bron, you do that shit again, bro, it’s me and you,’” he added.

Hawks Edge Magic in NBA's Mexico City Game

The Atlanta Hawks beat the Orlando Magic in a wild game in Mexico City. Down 119-117, Trae Young drew the defense to collapse, allowing him to kick out to Dejounte Murray in the corner for the game winning three.

On the other end Paolo Banchero attempted to answer with a three of his own, but clanke dit off the rim allowing Young to dribble out the clock.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver spoke after the game, glowing about the location and aiming for a return.

“The chances are very high that we will be back next year,” Silver said. “I don’t know yet whether it will be one or two games. I think, frankly, our schedule has gotten so complicated because we’re trying to avoid as many as four games out of five nights as we can. We try to avoid as many back-to-backs as we can.”

SOURCE SPORTS: Adam Silver Takes ‘Responsibility’ for Lackluster NBA All-Star Games

https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/38839092/adam-silver-says-take-responsibility-lack-nba-all-star-game-competitiveness

The 2024 NBA All-Star Game will take place at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indiana this season. Speaking with Andscape, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver is giving himself the blame for previous lackluster games and he came to the realization via Chris Paul.

“You guys tell us how important the All-Star Game is but then you change all our pregame protocols so that we don’t go through our typical routines as we would before a game because you have these elaborate introductions,” Silver relayed from The Point God. “No complaint about the introductions. We understand why you do it, but then you expect us then to go out and be in the mindset that we’re playing a typical basketball game.”

Silver agreed to Paul’s assessment, stating he will “take responsibility for that.”

He added, “And so, it means that the introduction is going to have to be a little bit shorter and halftime’s going to have to be a little bit more typical, starting in Indianapolis.”

The upcoming 2024 edition will also return to the East vs. West format. You can learn more about NBA All-Star 2024 here.

Adam Silver Promotes SKIMS After NBA & WNBA Deal

Adam Silver proudly promotes SKIMS, the shapewear company founded by Kim Kardashian, after the brand recently struck a deal with the NBA and WNBA. “Although I’m not going to show you, I’m wearing them right now. I strongly recommend them to everyone,” Silver told TMZ during a street interview earlier this week. “When guys are more comfortable, makes them play better. So yes, gonna have a direct impact on the game,” Silver added.

SKIMS recently landed a multiyear deal with both the NBA and WNBA in the wake of the launch of its men’s brand, which featured Thunder star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander as one of the launch models. The shapewear brand will be promoted at “marquee league events” and national television broadcasts will carry “virtual on-court signage” for the brand as well. “Skims has quickly become one of our most culturally influential brands. We look forward to bringing NBA fans and Skims users unique experiences, new offerings and premium products through our partnership,” Silver said in a press statement.

Charles Barkley Presses Adam Silver On Domestic Violence

However, it’s not all been brand promotion for Silver. Charles Barkley used Silver’s appearance on Inside The NBA to confront the league executive about the sharp rise in domestic violence incidents involving NBA players. Silver appeared completely caught off guard by the question. Eventually, he stammered his way through an answer that essentially boiled to “We tell the players that violence is bad”. However, while Silver said that the “consequences are enormous” for the players, the opposite rings true in practice.

The league only suspended repeat offender Miles Bridges for 10 games. Furthermore, they argued that he served 20 games of the original 30-game suspension by being a free agent last season. Meanwhile, Bridges was arrested in recent weeks for violating his protective order against his original victim. Meanwhile, the NBA has said nothing other than the league being “aware of the situation” when it comes to the Kevin Porter Jr. situation. Of course, Silver is never going to say anything revolutionary when it comes to domestic violence. However, it’s far from the answer that Barkley’s question warranted.

Adam Silver Confronted For His Greatest Weakness – Discipline

However, the response is typical of the Adam Silver era. Ever since he took over as NBA commissioner in 2014, the league has repeatedly failed to discipline its players. This past summer, the world watched as Silver appeared more comfortable cracking jokes about Ja Morant than actually punishing the Grizzlies star for flaunting his indifference to the NBA’s disciplinary process. Morant received 25 games for flashing a gun on Instagram Live. This was despite it being the second time it had happened and despite Morant begging for forgiveness from the league after the first time.

Silver, much like his NFL counterpoint Roger Goodell, is an owner’s executive. It’s all about the bottom line. Make the league money while ensuring the league doesn’t look too bad in the media. Suspend Morant for about a quarter of the season, but not too long so that the NBA can profit from people tuning in to watch Morant play. However, with domestic violence incidents noticeably on the rise, it remains to be seen what the league is actually going to do about it.

NBA Officially Unveils Long-Awaited In-Season Tournament

Commissioner Adam Silver has finally officially announced the long-anticipated in-season tournament for the NBA. He revealed the full plans during NBA2K24 Summer League on Saturday afternoon. The plan change will introduce an “NBA Cup” that will mirror similar European sports.

“This is a concept that has been rumbling around the league office for around 15 years,” Silver said on an episode of NBA Today from “NBA Con” as noted by ESPN. “We thought what a perfect opportunity for a global league like the NBA, and it’s a perfect fit for our game. New traditions take time. But, all throughout sports, we are seeing new innovations, and now is the time for this NBA in-season tournament.”

The NBA’s executive vice president of basketball strategy and analytics, Evan Wasch, also played a key role in facilitating the creation of the in-season tournament. He also discussed the impact the tournament will have on the schedule.

“The commitment we made to teams is that we would do everything in our power to avoid the group play games being the second night of back-to-backs, it will likely be impossible to avoid some of them being the first night of back-to-backs,” Wasch said. “It is probably infeasible for us to deliver a schedule where they’re not the first or second night of [any] back-to-backs. So the commitment we hope to achieve at this point is to avoid second nights of back-to-backs.”

In other NBA news, rookie Victor Wembanyama made his summer league debut on Friday night. Despite a win for the San Antonio Spurs, Wemby disappointed fans with just nine points, eight rebounds, three assists, and five blocks while going 2-for-13 from the field. His next chance to play will be on Sunday against the Portland Trail Blazers.

Adam Silver Cracks Joke About Ja Morant Gun Incident

On June 8, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver made an appearance on The Dan Patrick Show. Unsurprisingly, Ja Morant was a central point of conversation during the interview. It came just days after representatives claimed that the gun Morant was seen with on May 13 was fake. However, Silver was quick to shut down any debate about the authenticity of the gun.

“It’s interesting,” Silver said. “The very issue for Ja, certainly in the first incident, was treating a gun as a toy. That’s what we’re talking about and that’s what I think the danger is to society. Taking a gun, live streaming it without getting into gun issues in terms of the propriety of owning guns and the use of guns. I think everyone agrees that gun safety is critically important and that guns aren’t toys. “It’s something that I’m thinking a lot about because, again, I’m not going to get into specifics about the investigation. But in fact, if you’re live streaming something to the world that looks exactly like a gun and in a frankly reckless manner, should it matter whether or not it’s a real gun?.” However, that’s not all Silver had to say about Morant.

Silver Makes Joke About Morant

Toward the end of the interview, Silver made a not-so-subtle dig at Morant. After Patrick said he was going to get Adam Sandler to do an anti-carrying PSA for the league, Silver commented that it could carry a “double meaning”. If the dig wasn’t clear enough, Patrick tore down the veil completely as he agreed with Silver. “Yeah absolutely, the Ja Morant Anti-Carrying Policy,” Patrick said.

It was something of a surprising comment from the usually reserved NBA Commissioner. However, reactions to his comments were fairly muted on social media. Instead, people were more annoyed that he chose not to reveal Morant’s punishment only to go on a media tour essentially hyping up the punishment. However, with another interview out of the way, it’s just another day closer to actually learning what the NBA has in store for Morant. Follow all the latest sports news here at HotNewHipHop.
