Common Is Producing A Documentary About Civil Rights Activist Fannie Lou Hamer

Every American learns about the work of Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King, Jr in their school’s curriculum. But there are countless Civil Rights activists and revolutionaries left out of the picture. One such organizer is Fannie Lou Hamer, a Mississippi native who was instrumental in rallying support around the Voting Rights Act of 1964. Now, Hamer’s story is set to become a documentary — and Common has signed onto the project.

The biopic is titled God’s Long Summer, named after the book written by Charles Marsh. The film will follow Hamer’s story as an activist and an organizer, as well as touch on the violent setbacks she faced along the way. According to Billboard, the synopsis reads, “she fought against the Southern political establishment, systemic racism and misogyny by exercising her right to vote and fighting for the rights of others. Labeled as plain spoken and unfit to lead the movement, Hamer captivated the nation with her powerful voice, sheer will, and faith in her fight against leaders at the highest levels of state and federal government and within the Civil Rights Movement itself to help secure passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.”

About his decision to join the film project, Common said: “Fannie Lou Hamer is a revolutionary figure we should all know. Her story and impact is evidence that Black History IS American History. We have all benefited from her work and dedication. I feel blessed to be working with this incredible group of producers to bring this story to the screen.”

Charles McLaurin, a fellow Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee member and close friend of Hamer’s, serves as a story consultant for the film.

“It’s impossible to talk about voting rights in America and not include Mrs. Hamer,” McLaurin said. “Her story will serve as a reminder of our long history of struggle to secure voter rights for all citizens in this country, and, add her powerful voice to the current struggle to pass new voting rights legislation.”

Klay Thompson’s Father Gives Update On Achilles Injury

Klay Thompson has been struggling with injuries over the past couple of seasons and as a result, he hasn’t been able to hit the court. Last year, Thompson missed the Warriors season with an ACL tear and in 2021, he is missing the season with an Achilles injury. This has been devastating to Klay and his teammates although he is as determined as ever to get back into the lineup and compete for a title.

Thompson’s father Mychal Thompson has been offering updates on his son and recently, he got to speak to reporters about where Thompson is in his rehab. As he explains, Thompson is limited in what he can do although he feels at home with his teammates.

“All that [Klay] can do right now is just pool therapy, walking, stuff like that,” Thompson said via NBC Sports. “He’s doing much better this year because he’s around the team. Being away from the team, you feel isolated, you don’t feel like you’re a part of it. Even though he’s not playing, just being on the bench and supporting the guys, he feels like he’s a part of it.”

While Thompson is still a long way from being healthy, Thompson’s determination should come as great news for Warriors fans who have been waiting on some good news. As Thompson continues to march through with rehab, we will continue to update you on his condition.

Mo3 Murder Suspect, Kewon White, Indicted On Murder Charge

Last November, Hip-Hop fans everywhere learned about the tragic passing of yet another beloved rapper. Reports surfaced that Dallas’ own Mo3 had tragically been shot and killed on a Dallas freeway. In a year in which violence also took the lives of artists such as Pop Smoke and King Von, fans especially grieved over the tragic loss of Mo3. Roughly three weeks following his passing, reports revealed that then-21-year-old Kewon Dontrell White was arrested and accused of killing the Dallas rapper.

This week, White received a major update on his current legal situation. According to The Dallas Morning News, Dallas County grand jurors indicted the now-22-year-old on a murder charge pertaining to the November highway shooting death of Mo3. Although footage provided by Dallas police officer’s depict Mo3’s shooter wearing a ski mask, law enforcement reportedly believes White to be the shooter.

Reports reveal that White will remain in federal custody due to a previous felony conviction until he stands trial in federal court in April. He could face up to life in prison with the possibility of parole if convicted.

As reports earlier this week have shown, families of the victims in situations like these don’t always wish prison on the opposing party. Do you think that Kewon White should face jail time for the charges brought against him?

Anthony Davis Reveals LeBron James’ Opinion Of MVP Awards

LeBron James has won a ton of individual awards throughout his time in the NBA, including the MVP trophy. Over the past few years, LeBron has been passed up for other players, which has led to a ton of debate about who actually deserves the award. Last year was especially controversial after LeBron lost out to the likes of Giannis Antetokounmpo.

While speaking to reporter Bill Oram of The Athletic, LeBron’s teammate Anthony Davis was asked about the MVP award and whether James even cares about it. As AD explained, the Lakers star couldn’t care less about the individual accolades, as all he wants to win are the championships.

“Put it to you like this,” Davis said. “I know that that man does not care about MVP awards. He cares about championships. So if he loses the MVP and wins the championship like he did last year, he doesn’t care. So that’s what his mindset is, he’s not focused on MVPs. He’s focused on Finals MVPs.”

This is the kind of mentality you want on your team, as it’s one that looks to advance the team rather than one specific individual. As a result of LeBron’s mentality, the Lakers were able to win the championship last season, and now, they look poised to do some damage again in the playoffs.

Needless to say, the Lakers are lucky to have LeBron right now.

Once again drawn from the classic Brian De Palma film Scarface, the picture depicts a stylized image of Tony Montana’s meeting with Alejandro Sosa. Alongside the image, Benny opted to share a brief hype-inducing message, though he maintained that the work would ultimately speak for itself.

“Me and @harryfraud linked up on ni**as I could sit here and type a bunch of shit but y’all know my work and if u don’t where the fuck u been,” writes The Butcher, prompting a surge of excited comment from some of his hip-hop peers. Curren$y chimed in with “There it go,” while Lloyd Banks opted to deliver three fire emojis for good measure; we can only hope to see verses from both parties. On that note, The Butcher has decided to keep the features under wraps for now. It should be noted that the first Plugs I Met had appearances from Black Thought, Pusha T, Jadakiss, Conway The Machine, and more.

Look for The Plugs I Met 2 to land on March 19th. For more from Benny, read our exclusive interview with the Buffalo emcee right here
