Skepta Might Be Retiring

One of the greatest rappers to ever come out of the United Kingdom, Skepta might be hanging up his microphone this year. The rap legend is seemingly hinting at his retirement in a series of new posts, claiming that he has stopped recording and that all of his new verses that come out were recorded in past years. From the sounds of it, Skepta doesn’t look to be interested in continuing his music career further.

Following the release of Jae5’s new song “Dimension”, which features Skepta and Rema, the 38-year-old Londoner promoted the song and roasted the main artist for its title. He also said that his verse was old and that he has effectively stopped going to the studio.

“This Jae5 song/video featuring Rema and myself was recorded and shot last year in Ghana,” said Skepta. “I have one more song with Bando & L’s that we also recorded in 2020, after we drop that I’m out..”

The iconic grime artist then roasted the song’s title, saying, “Still can’t believe Jae5 called the song ‘Dimension’, such a nonsense name,” he wrote before making another statement alluding to the end of his career. “Any verses of mine you hear this year, were all recorded last year. I’ve stopped recording 2021.”

If this is really the end of Skepta’s music career, we’ve been lucky to be blessed with some extraordinary ground-breaking sounds over the years. Skepta is one of the genre’s greats and he will go down in history as a pioneer. Do you think he’s done for good?

BRS Kash’s “Throat Baby (Go Baby)” Goes Platinum

Having dropped some of the best music videos of 2021 and released one of the most infectious runaway hits of last summer, it’s safe to say that  BRS Kash is here to stay. The Atlanta artist currently has a lot to be proud of, and according to BRS Kash himself, the LVRN artist has already earned his first platinum plaque.

According to the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), BRS Kash’s “Throat Baby (Go Baby)” officially achieved platinum status on Wednesday, March 17, having moved the necessary one million units to earn its new certification. BRS Kash dropped the single last summer on July 24, and since its release, the Atlanta artist has become one of the most popular new acts in the music industry. The viral hit recently went gold in January, so it’s great to see that it has already achieved platinum status two months later.

Also at the start of the year, BRS Kash doubled down on the success of “Throat Baby (Go Baby)” and released his mixtape debut on Atlanta record label LVRN, aptly titled Kash Only. The 12-track project most notably housed the colossal remix to “Throat Baby (Go Baby)” that boasted crazy guest appearances from DaBaby as well as City Girls, and Kash Only also featured Mulatto on the song “Kash App” and Toosii on the song “Feel Better.”

Revisit the video for BRS Kash’s breakout, and now platinum-certified, hit below.

Congratulations on the major achievement, BRS Kash!

Mo3 Drops Posthumous OG Bobby Billions Collab “Outside”

Mo3, who was killed in a Dallas shooting last November, now lives on through a posthumous remix of “Outside.” Joined by OG Bobby Billions, with whom MO3 has collaborated frequently, “Outside” highlights the late rapper’s melodic chops. Off the bat, the song opens on a somber note, fueled by a melancholic keyboard and guitar arrangement. Now, the song itself isn’t technically new, as Bobby Billions previously released the track as a solo effort last year. Yet MO3’s vocals add a newfound presence to the track, not to mention a bittersweet quality given the circumstances.

The emotion can be felt in Mo3’s vocal performance. “You hear that church up in my verse cus that’s how I’m raised,” he sings, looking for forgiveness while acknowledging his flaws. “I told God he gotta forgive me I’m insane.” The sense of conflicting duality is a driving force throughout, as Mo3 admits he doesn’t always stick to the righteous path. “God I need a second chance knowing that I love you, but sometimes I do the devil dance,” he reflects. “Lost a couple of my partnas so I’m slidin’ out on whoever / and drop one of them ni*gas when I kill em’ call the reverend.”

Check out Mo3’s posthumous take on “Outside,” and be sure to sound off with your thoughts on this updated version below.

Smino Calls “Cap” On Kim Kardashian Having The Best Grill

Kim Kardashian is being celebrated for her new grill, which features opal birthstones. The piece is gorgeous, but one particular rapper wants the world to know that Kim isn’t necessarily setting any trends, pointing out that he had an opal grill before her.

With so many people showing love for Kim Kardashian’s new mouthpiece, Smino respectfully disagreed that she’s got the best grill in the game, commenting on her new pick-up on Twitter. “Cap,” he wrote, decorating his message with hearts and responding to someone who claimed the criminal justice reform activist “destroyed” the grill game.

In her defense, Kim never actually said that she started this trend. All she did was post her new grill. However, people are bashing the socialite now that Smino has jumped in. His fellow St. Louis native, the legendary Nelly, backed him up in the comments after The Shade Room shared his reply. “Stl Yessserr my nephew @smino already been did that… hard for stl to get our credit tho,” he said. “We did opal grills around 7 years ago,” added Ben Baller in a separate comment. “Again for @thundercatmusic 2 years ago.”

People have also pointed out that Erykah Badu has an opal grill.

Who has the best opal grill? Is it Kim Kardashian, Smino, Thundercat, Erykah Badu, or somebody else?

Gupadad 4000 & !llmind Team Up For Collab Project “1176”

Over the past month, Guapdad 4000 and !llmind have been getting their fans ready for their collaborative project, starting with the release of “How Many” in February. Earlier last week, the newfound duo aimed to build even more anticipation for the album by dropping off the P-Lo-assisted single “She Wanna.” With such disparate singles, fans were interested in seeing what a full-length effort from the two artists would look like, and now, they finally can because 1176 has finally released.

The 14-track collaborative record arrives today, and as previously reported, 1176 does feature a more serious and, at times, introspective Guapdad 4000. For an eight-song stretch at the core of the album, listeners are treated to the collaborative magic of Gupadad 4000 and !llmind, and towards the end of 1176, impressive collaborations with Tish Hyman and Buddy pop up as well.

Young Dolph Goes Hard On “Yeeh Yeeh”

There’s something about Young Dolph’s cadence that simply lends itself well to a hard-hitting instrumental. The Paper Route Empire’s sneering baritone carries a certain authority, one that commands attention even in short doses. And though his new single “Yeeh Yeeh” clocks in at a little over two minutes in length, Dolph makes the most of the blink-and-you-missed-it runtime.

Fueled by a dark and ominous instrumental by BeatPlay, Dolph proceeds to move at his own methodical pace, exuding the presence of Omar sauntering down the block in The Wire. That’s not to say his mindstate is always perpetually clear. Case in point, his opening bars. “Don’t know how I made it home last night, everything a blur, Hallucinating, can’t remember shit, drunk too much syrup,” he spits. “Doin’ one-thirty down Bellevue, fucked ’round and scraped the curb / My finger on the trigger, why? cause I got bad nerves.”

Confirmed to be a solo cut from Dolph and Key Glock’s upcoming album Dum & Dummer 2, from which a new single “Sleep With The Roaches” recently dropped, “Yeeh Yeeh” is another sign that the project is shaping up nicely. Look for that to land on March 26th, via Paper Route Empire.

Dr. Dre’s Ex-Wife Claims He “Knocked [Her] Out Cold” While Drunk

Dr. Dre has faced numerous abuse allegations over the years, and yet another one is coming this week via his ex-wife Nicole Young, who claims that the rapper/producer “knocked [her] out cold” with a punch square to the face during a drunken rage.

The entire situation between Dr. Dre and his ex-wife Nicole Young is heartbreaking. The two were seemingly happily married for over 24 years, filing for divorce in the last few months and refusing to be amicable about their split. Their dirty laundry has been aired out for all to read about, including abuse allegations, talks about money, and more. As reported by The Blast, new court documents from Nicole Young allege that, during a drunken rage, Dr. Dre punched his wife in the face and knocked her out.

Outlining a number of “incidents of domestic violence he perpetrated against [her]“, Nicole Young detailed an alleged incident that took place in 1999.

“Andre felt l ‘disrespected’ him while he was at a party. He pulled me away and punched me squarely in the face, knocking me out cold,” she claims in legal documents. “I woke up in the passenger seat of our car, without a seatbelt and with Andre speeding at over 100 miles per hour on the 118 freeway. Andre was drunk and out of control. He was swerving and weaving, screaming at me. l was terrified that Andre would crash into the center divider.

He threw my planner which contained photographs of our young children out the car window. l begged him to stop or slow down the entire time we were in the car. l thought l was going to die in the car that night.”

Nicole Young also detailed incidents that allegedly happened in 1995 and 2012, which also included violence on the part of Dr. Dre.

Dr. Dre has denied abusing his ex-wife, saying, “I have never hit, attacked, stalked‚ molested, assaulted, threatened or abused Nicole in any fashion‚ at any time. Nor have I ever surveilled or followed her or had anyone to do so. At no time were the police ever called during our marriage. There were never any domestic violence claims made by Nicole during our marriage, formal or informal. There is no documentary evidence of any alleged abuse.”

Recently, Dr. Dre made a plea for the judge to declare him legally single so he can move on from this messy divorce.
