YSL RICO Trial: Lil’ Woody’s Latest Testimony Goes Viral for Trying to Make Young Thug’s Attorney Say the N-Word

Screen Shot 2024 08 14 at 1.38.15 PM

Lil Woody’s testimonies in the YSL trial get more insane by the day. When reading a transcript, Young Thug’s attorney, Brian Steel, would not say the n-word, which Woody caught on to and asked what “N” was during a court session.

“What is ‘n,’” Woody said to the word’s spelling. “Oh ‘nigga.’”

Earlier this month, the Georgia Supreme Court suspended attorney Jonathan Reuven Melnick for six months due to conduct unrelated to the ongoing trial. Huh, what, wow.

As a result, witness Kenneth Copeland, also known as Lil’ Woody, appeared in court on Tuesday without his attorney—like, no lawyer at all.

During his testimony, Copeland repeatedly responded to Assistant District Attorney Simone Hylton with the phrase, “I don’t recall.”

Get this: Melnick’s suspension was confirmed by a Georgia Supreme Court decision that was released on Tuesday morning. The court order stated, “Accordingly, it is hereby ordered that Jonathan R. Melnick is suspended from the practice of law in Georgia for six months. The suspension based on this opinion will take effect as of the date this opinion is issued and will expire by its own terms six months later.” The State Bar of Georgia’s directory lists Jonathan Melnick as suspended for “non-compliance” with Continuing Legal Education rules, rendering him ineligible to practice law in the state.

So what’s interesting is that after spending most of the morning on the stand, Copeland refused to continue testifying upon learning of Melnick’s suspension, insisting on having legal representation present.

Judge Whitaker, probably as frustrated as everyone else, responded by dismissing the jury for recess and committed to securing a public defender for Copeland in Melnick’s absence. When the court reconvened, Whitaker announced that the appointed attorney would not be available until the next day, meaning Copeland’s testimony could not proceed.

Young Thug Trial: Cross-Exam of ‘Lil Woody’ Continues

image

It’s another day for everyone on Earth but if you’re involved with the Young Thug YSL RICO trial, it’s the 119th day of that. The cross-examination of Kenneth ‘Lil Woody’ Copeland continued on that day and significant developments ensued.

Brian Steel kicked things off by revisiting a meeting that took place on June 10, during which he believes Copeland felt pressured by the state to testify. Despite Steel’s attempts to get more details, Copeland remained largely unresponsive on this matter. This led Steel to shift his focus to previous interviews that had been played by the prosecution.

Steel, who has made a name for himself questioned Copeland about Young Thug, whose real name is Jeffery Williams, and his alleged connection to the January 2015 murder of Donovan “Nut” Thomas. According to reports, Young Thug had rented the car used in the murder. Steel also brought up a reference to Copeland in Young Thug’s song “Halftime,” specifically the lyric, “lil whoodie done pull up and pop at his noggin.” In response, Copeland denied any truth to that lyric.

Get this, further questioning involved the music video for Copeland’s song “Homicide” and his social media activity, as Steel continued to probe into Copeland’s actions and statements.

Steel press play on portions of interviews that Copeland had given to police shortly after the murder of Donovan Thomas. In one of these interviews, Copeland mentioned that he had been warned that Thomas and his associates were planning to harm him on the day Thomas was killed.

Steel wasn’t playing around and confronted Copeland with the fact that he was charged with Thomas’ murder four months after his 2015 police interrogation. Copeland admitted that he was aware of the charge. However, when asked whether Young Thug had also been charged, Copeland stated that he did not know.

During the contentious questioning, Copeland became emotional, describing the harsh conditions he endured while being held in the Rice Street, or Fulton County Jail. He detailed the foul-smelling and chaotic environment, noting that people were smearing feces on the walls. He shared that he was locked in a room and felt like he was losing his mind. Copeland also expressed negative feelings about his time in the DeKalb County Jail, adding that his stomach had been cramping, and he was struggling to eat due to the stress of the trial.

Steel did not hold back on Copeland’s extensive criminal history, including his numerous charges, plea deals, and convictions over the years.

Steel went on to review Copeland’s extensive criminal history, including his numerous charges, plea deals, and convictions over the years.

Shortly before 4 p.m., Judge Judge Whitaker interrupted the questioning. Steel informed the judge that he anticipated concluding his cross-examination by 11 a.m. on Wednesday. Other attorneys, Doug Weinstein and Careton Matthews, indicated they would need only 20 to 30 minutes for their questioning, while Shannon Stillwell’s attorney, Max Schardt, suggested he might require a full day.

Okay so the next witness in the never ending parade of witnesses expected to take the stand is Antonio “Mounk Tounk” Sledge, who pled guilty in 2022 to conspiracy to violate the racketeering act and possession of a firearm by a felon. As part of his plea deal, Sledge agreed to testify against the remaining defendants in exchange for a recommended 15-year probation sentence and the dismissal of the gun charge. Sledge, reportedly a YSL member since 2012, admitted involvement in a drive-by shooting and allegedly has knowledge of at least one YSL member’s role in the murder of Donovan Thomas.

The Young Thug saga continues.

The Roots’ First New Album In Over A Decade Will Finally Arrive In 2025, And Questlove Hints At The Release Date

Questlove recently spoke with Common and Pete Rock on his Questlove Supreme podcast, and the conversation yielded something The Roots fans have been waiting for since the group’s latest album, 2014’s …And Then You Shoot Your Cousin: News of a new album.

During the episode, Questlove said of the upcoming project, “I know the exact date I want to release it, and it’s not 2024, but it’s a seminal 2025 date that will make sense once it comes out.”

Worth noting is that 2025 will mark the 30th anniversary of The Roots’ Do You Want More?!!!??! (which was released on January 17, 1995), as well as the 15th anniversaries of How I Got Over (June 22, 2010) and the collaborative John Legend album Wake Up! (September 21, 2010).

Quest also spoke about how Common and Pete Rock’s 2024 joint album The Auditorium Vol. 1 has inspired him and Black Thought (Tariq Trotter) to finish their upcoming album. He said:

“I will say that it’s made Tariq into… the motherf*cker wrote seven songs in one day! We have not done that since our second album. […] I was like, ‘Yo, dog. You ain’t going to believe this, but Rash [Common] and Pete made the perfect summit meeting record. No person’s outshining the other person.’ […] I was just going off about it and I could tell I planted a seed. But then, I think after the Hollywood Bowl performance that we did, […] I think that lit something under Tariq.

I mean, I can say in the last two weeks, he’s knocked off at least 80 percent. […] I mean, back in Do You Want More?!!!??! days, ‘Riq would write, like, six or seven songs in a setting. This album is definitely […] it’s probably what he’s working on right now as I speak. It’s inspiring.”

Missy Elliott Grabs Victory Over Fellow Songwriter For Aaliyah Royalties

Back in mid-November 2018, Missy Elliott, Timbaland, as well as Aaliyah’s estate, were all taken to court by songwriter, Terry Williams. Specifically, the latter sued them for not receiving any royalties for the late R&B legend’s track, “Heartbroken”. Williams claimed that he co-wrote the song with Missy sometime in between 1994-1995. For those curious, “Heartbroken” would go on to release in 1996. He asserts that the only way that Aaliyah got her hands on the record was because Missy sneakily sold the record to her behind his back. Furthermore, Williams says that him and the legendary femcee signed a deal to share the profits from “Heartbroken”.

With that background information in hand, let’s fast forward to today because we have a new update from AllHipHop. After tons of disproving from Elliott and lots of hard thinking from Judge Quiñones Alejandro, the latter is giving the win to the rapper. There is a three-year statute of limitations on issues like these, and Alejandro says that Williams didn’t “exhibit reasonable diligence in recognizing the alleged infringement”. It’s worth noting that Williams also took Missy to court over records penned going back to 1993, too.

Missy Elliott Is Getting Full Royalties For Her Work With Aaliyah

In Judge Alejandro’s statement, he says, “Williams commenced this action against Elliott on November 14, 2018, over twenty-two years after the release of ‘Heartbroken.’ Under these circumstances, this Court further finds that Williams has failed to offer evidence that he exercised due diligence. As such, Williams’ co-ownership claim based on the song ‘Heartbroken’ released by Aaliyah is barred by the three-year statute of limitations”. However, this just one of many disputes, as Williams sued her for multiple other artists’ records. But she can still celebrate this one, and its perhaps the most important for Missy.

What are your thoughts on Missy Elliott winning the royalties battle in court over the Aaliyah track “Heartbroken”? How much longer do you think it will take for her and Terry Williams to resolve all of this? We would like to hear what you have to say, so leave your thoughts in the comments. Travis Scott Shocks Fans With Insane “Days Before Rodeo” First Week Sales Figures

Travis Scott went on an impressive run during the earliest stages of his career. Overall, one of his most beloved projects is Days Before Rodeo, which came out back in 2014. This is a project that spawned the Scott sound that so many fell in love with. While the project is nowhere near as polished as Rodeo or even Astroworld, there is no doubt that the pieces of greatness were present. Unfortunately, the project had been missing from streaming services for years. Last Friday, that all changed much to the delight of fans.

As a result of this re-release, Scott decided to launch a whole bunch of bundles on his website. Every piece of merch comes with a digital album sale. Meanwhile, Scott’s fans have been flocking to Spotify and Apple Music to run up the streams. As a result of all of these efforts, Scott’s 10-year-old mixtape is set to sell 217K units in its first week. It is a monumental number especially when you think about how numerous hip-hop projects have struggled to sell over 60K units this year.
