A Former ‘New York Times’ Reporter Allegedly Exploited Artists For Personal Gain

A new report from Input Magazine alleges that a former reporter at The New York Times exploited a number of artists for personal gain. Ian Urbina is accused of seeking out artists to give him music that he would put on a soundtrack to accompany the release of his book The Outlaw Ocean: Journeys Across The Last Untamed Frontier, which arrived in August of 2019. Urbina described it as a “passion project” and said that a company, Synesthesia Media, would handle the distribution of the music through streaming services. He also claimed that $50,000 was earmarked for the project and that Spotify, Netflix, and book publishing house Knopf were all building content around the soundtrack.

The deal Urbina worked out with the artists that submitted music to him involved him receiving 50% of the revenue they made from the song(s). In exchange, he promised to use his platform and the interest generated behind the project to promote the artists and their work. He claimed that the artists would receive a bigger boost in their careers through working with him.

But many of the artists claim that the promotion behind the songs was extremely minimal. One, Benn Jordan, who performs under the name The Flashbulb, made a video about Urbina’s project, which he called a “scam,” and shared it on YouTube.

In the end, at least 462 artists partnered with Urbina and more than 2,100 songs in total were submitted to him. Brian Trifon, who works under the alias Trifonic, says he signed on to work with Urbina, but after suspecting something was off with the project, he ended up submitting a single song rather than the EP that was part of their agreement. “I saw that there was a good chance the scope was expanding to more than just a handful of artists,” he said. “97 percent was my materials and sounds and I was no longer thrilled to be giving up 50 percent of it.”

He added, “But there was no Netflix, Spotify, Knopf or NYT special support. It was all 100 percent about his book and even that, not many people seemed to care. I’ve worked in music long enough that I know that sh*t happens and I just moved on, but the whole thing left a bad taste in my mouth.”

Urbina declined to comment about the matter and directed Input to a statement published by Synesthesia. “The video is inaccurate,” it read, adding that the project’s goal was to amplify journalism, highlight issues covered by the reporting, “and if possible, to develop additional funding to support more reporting.” It continues, “We deeply value our artist relationships. We have always wanted our partners to share our vision.” The statement also says that artists no longer interested in signing off a portion of their revenue to Urbina can release themselves from the agreement and that Synesthesia will “direct 100 percent of all such revenues to the artist.”

Danielle Rhoades Ha, a spokesperson for NYT, says the publication is aware of Jordan’s video. “The allegations are troubling,” she says. “We are currently looking into the matter.” Urbina departed the New York Times on May 30, 2019.

Brent Faiyaz, SZA & Khalid Lead This Week’s “R&B Season” Playlist

We’re back, again, with a brand new update on our R&B Season playlist. Every week, we bring you the freshest new music in R&B to make sure you close out your weekend and start your week on an excellent note. Without further ado, here’s your break down for this week’s R&B Season playlist.

Fans are eagerly awaiting a new album from SZA, though there hasn’t been many updates in recent times. Instead, SZA has dug into the vault and blessed fans with loose cuts on her unofficial Soundcloud page. It seemed unconventional, given her superstar status but we weren’t complaining. On Friday, her single, “I Hate You” got an official release and can be found on streaming services. It was necessary to include this cut on this week’s playlist.

Along with new music from SZA, Brent Faiyaz came through with some smooth new vibes on his single, “Mercedes.” Serving as his first single since collaborating with Drake on “Wasting Time,” his latest offering is a promising sign of what he has in store in 2022.

Finally, we have new heat from Khalid who just dropped off a new project titled, Scenic Drive. “Scenic Drive” ft. Smino and Ari Lennox was a shoo-in on this week’s playlist.

Check out the latest R&B Season update below and subscribe to HNHH on Spotify for more excellent playlists.

Trolls Tease Leonardo DiCaprio About Notoriously Young Girlfriends Following New Interview

If you were to carefully inspect Leonardo DiCaprio’s dating history, you’d quickly notice one thing – he’s never dated a woman over the age of 25. Over the years, the What’s Eating Gilbert Grape star has been linked to names like Gisele Bundchen, Blake Lively, Erin Heatherton, and Camila Morrone, but only during the years that they’re in their so-called “prime.”

While it could be a complete coincidence, or even just a matter of relationships not working out, pop culture fanatics love to discuss the topic, and it often gets brought up whenever Leo begins trending for practically any reason, be it related to his love life or not.

As you may know, the 47-year-old has a new film set to release on Netflix on December 24th, also starring his good buddy Jonah Hill, Jennifer Lawrence, Meryl Streep, Kid Cudi, Ariana Grande, and tons of our other favourite faces. With the movie premiere quickly approaching, the cast members have begun doing press to amp up the excitement around the world.

Early this morning, the Los Angeles native sat down with Streep on CBS to chat about the movie, and a clip that’s been flying around Twitter shows DiCaprio intensely zoning out as the two women beside him talk, appearing almost sad, or lost. Of course, it wasn’t long before trolls decided to bring the Oscar Award-winning actor’s dating life up.

While people began speculating about what could possibly have DiCaprio so down in the dumps, comments like, “two women over 25 were talking, so he had no idea what to do,” and “he’s counting days til his girlfriend’s 25th birthday” began flying around.

Others joked that he may have just finished listening to Taylor Swift’s re-recording of her emotional song, “All Too Well,” or that he might’ve even transported into another dimension. Arguably the most logical explanation was that a) it’s a Sunday morning and b) he’s probably been answering all the same questions in every interview he’s done as of late.

What do you think Leonardo was thinking about while “off in space”?

LeCrae & 1K Phew Team Up For “No Church In A While”

Christian rap is often dismissed but artists like LeCrae have proven that it doesn’t have to be all preachy. Over the years, LeCrae has established himself as an exceptional MC whose faith in God often extends to his artwork. However, with the launch of his label Reach Records has allowed him to foster similar talent.

This week, he teamed up with Roster Records signee 1K Phew for their new collaborative project, No Church In A While. The 10-song project focuses on the chemistry between LeCrae and Phew, though they close the project out with appearances from Hulvey and WHATUPRG.

No Church In A While has all types of meanings,”  1K Phew said of the project. “We just went through the pandemic and ain’t nobody to church in a minute. This album is for everybody who ain’t been to church or connected to God in a while who thinks they can’t go back. It ain’t really that deep. God is waiting for everybody to tap back in. No Church In A While is telling people there’s still hope, you can still turn to God no matter how long you’ve been away.”

C-Murder Pays Homage To Young Dolph On “I Don’t Wanna Go Outside”

The death of Young Dolph rippled through the world. The rapper carved out a lane for himself in hip-hop while emphasizing the importance of being independent and giving back to the community. Fans, friends, and peers have mourned his loss over the past few weeks as many others have paid tribute to his memory.

C-Murder is currently incarcerated but he was among those who were torn by the news of Dolph’s passing. This week, he shared a brand new single titled, “I Don’t Wanna Go Outside” that pays homage to Dolph. The rapper tackles thumping Southern production and shares his appreciation for Dolph, along with the dangers of the streets as a high-profile figure.

Check out the latest from C-Murder below and let us know your thoughts in the comments.

Boy, life is real
I was sittin’ on a bunk when Dolph got killed
I jumped off the bunk like I lost my senses

Tyler, The Creator Shares His 5 Favorite Jay-Z Songs Of All Time

Jay-Z turned 52 years old this past weekend, which, at this point, should be considered a national holiday. People began flooding the timeline with birthday wishes and praise for Hov’ while others reflected on Jay’s incredible catalog. One of those people happens to be Tyler, The Creator.

Carl Chery hit Twitter on Saturday where he made a call to fans to list off their top five Jay-Z songs of all time “without overthinking it.” Chery listed “D’Evils” at #1 before sharing the other four in no particular order. “Dead Presidents,” “Where I’m From,” “A Million And One Questions (Premiere Remix),” and “U Don’t Know” rounded out the top 5 for Chery.

Later on, he caught up with Tyler, The Creator who similarly shared his list of favorite Jay tracks, though it was difficult to narrow down. “My top five Jay-Z songs… ‘Fuck All Night,’ ‘Excuse Me Miss,’ his Funk Flex, like, ‘Grammy Family’ freestyle, if that counts. ‘Allure’ and — Oh, his verse on ‘You gotta lot of shit that’s cool to me… ‘‘Do It Again’” off Vol. 3! That verse crazy, insane. Oh and ‘Show You How,’ that last verse showed a lot of perspective to me as a kid, so that’s six so I’m done.”

There are too many good Hov songs in the world that it’s hard to narrow it down to five. When asked about removing the “Grammy Family” freestyle, Tyler said it’s impossible. “That shit is crazy,” he said.

Noname Cancels Her Upcoming Album “Factory Baby”

Chicago wordsmith and activist Noname sidelined her music career as of late to focus on efforts she felt were more worthwhile. Whether that be her book club which donates free reading materials to incarcerated Black people, or just community-based aid in general, Noname’s activism and empathy have been of the utmost importance to her.

With that being said, she still has released music from time to time, dropping two singles in the past two years. Both releases were potent, as Summer 2020’s “Song 33” was a response to J. Cole’s apparent diss to her in wake of the George Floyd murder, and February’s “Rainforest “was a revolutionary and spirited lyrical clinic about the plight of Black people in America.

Since the release of “Rainforest,” Noname had been telling her fans that her new album Factory Baby was on the horizon, and would release at some point in 2021. She explained that the album would depict her headspace in recent times, and elaborate on her philanthropic efforts.

However, today (Dec. 5), Noname took to Instagram to announce she would no longer be putting out Factory Baby, and may be done with making music for good. She said she has trouble finding production that connects with her and has had trouble rekindling the spark that helped her create her prior music like 2018’s Room 25 and 2016’s Telefone: “Most days I’m not sure if I’ll ever make music again. The last time I was consistently making songs was 4 years ago. It’s been so hard to find producers to link up with and who I genuinely connect with sonically. I’m truly grateful for the art I was able to release but that might be it from me. Like, it shouldn’t be this hard. No lie this sh*t actually makes me incredibly sad and I rarely leave the crib these days. I don’t want to keep lying and saying there’s an album on the way when there’s not. I’m sorry I’ve lead y’all on. I wanted to believe things would change but they haven’t.”

It’s tough to hear that Noname has been going through such a rough patch creatively, as she is one of the most captivating and powerful voices poets in hip-hop today.

CoachDaGhost Arrested For Murder Of Brooklyn Teen: Report

27-year-old Culture Bermudez, also known as rapper CoachDaGhost, was nabbed by the NYPD in Georgia on Friday, NY Daily News reports. He was brought back from Clayton County and charged with the slaying of 17-year-old Bryan Sanon, which took place on March 13th.

Sanon had reportedly been headed out on a walk with a group of his friends when a gunman jumped out of the backseat of a silver sedan and opened fire at E. 82nd St near Farragut Road shortly after 10 AM; the teen died at the scene, a 20-year-old was shot in the face, and a 19-year-old had bullets graze both of his legs.

Cops were able to identify Bermudez as a suspect, but by the time they’d put the pieces together, the “Hit List” recording artist had already fled the state. The article notes that he’s a member of the Hood Starz street gang, and spent 2011 – 2017 locked up for shooting a rival at the Marcus Garvey Houses. Following his release, he was placed on parole until 2022, court records state.

Sanon’s mother, Juliana was at a doctor’s appointment when the incident occurred. She revealed that she got a notification on her phone about a nearby crime, but never suspected it would be her own child who had been slain. “I didn’t expect that I would come back and not see my son,” she told Daily News. “I just want to know why.”

Upon arriving back to her neighbourhood, Mrs. Sanon found her son still laying dead on the sidewalk. “The last thing I saw of my son is him lying down in a crouched position covered in the white blanket on the road. I just wanted to hold him,” she said in an interview following Bryan’s death. “I just wish to see my son right now. I just want to see him and hold him.”

It seems to remain unclear whether Bermudez was the shooter or driver. A 26-year-old accomplice, Naquan Pruitt, was arrested back in July, and is being held on murder and attempted murder charges. CoachDaGhost was charged with murder, attempted murder, and assault, with his arraignment pending in Brooklyn Criminal Court on Saturday.

Check back in with HNHH later for more updates on CoachDaGhost’s arrest.
