Saweetie To Make Her “Saturday Night Live” Debut This Month

No matter what your opinion is on Saweetie, you can’t deny that she’s a hustler. She’s ascended to the heights of pop culture without releasing a full-length EP. The Bay Area rapper has still landed deals with everyone from Crocs to McDonald’s, simply off of the strength of her brand.

While fans await the arrival of her forthcoming debut album, Pretty Bitch Music, it looks like there’s a sign it’ll be arriving at some point this month. Saweetie has been tapped as a musical guest for Saturday Night Live in November. She’ll be making her SNL debut alongside host Simu Liu. The “My Type” rapper is joining a superstar list of musical guests on the show this month which include Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran. Saweetie and Simu Liu’s episode airs on Nov. 20th.

Perhaps, the date of her episode is an indication that the album could arrive this month. In October, Thug made his appearance on SNL following the release of his latest studio album, PUNKPretty Bitch Music could very well drop the day before her appearance on SNL, similar to Thug.

Very little information about Pretty Bitch Music has been made available since she announced the project. Earlier this year, she dropped Pretty Summer Playlist: Season 1 to hold fans over until PBM hits DSPs.

Eminem Was “Honoured” To Perform With LL Cool J At His Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Induction

This past weekend saw not only plenty of legendary Halloween costumes, but also several of the biggest names in music make history as they were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. This year’s list of inductees included Tina Turner, The Go-Go’s, the Foo Fighters, Billy Preston, and rapper LL Cool J, among others.

When it was his turn to grace the stage, LL had plenty of surprises in store. The artist received an awesome introductory speech from Dr. Dre, in which he referred to his friend as someone who has “hit that unique space that crosses generations,” being enjoyed by not only you, but also your mother and kids.

Afterwards, the 53-year-old put on a show stopping performance with the help of some friends. Jennifer Lopez made an appearance to assist on the pair’s 2002 collaboration, “All I Have,” and the New York native handled “Go Cut Creator Go” and “Mama Said Knock You Out” by himself.

As if that weren’t enough excitement for one induction ceremony, LL Cool J also enlisted Eminem to perform “Rock The Bells.” Em shared a photo of the special moment on Twitter earlier today, thanking his friend for the opportunity to tear up the stage beside him.

“‘Cause there’s a 10 to 1 chance that you might get smacked! ROCK THE BELLS with @llcoolj @rockhall airs 11/20 on HBO. It was such an honor, & 16 y.o. Marshall is so proud – congrats L!” the “Ass Like That” artist wrote.

Another hip-hop legend who made their way into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame last weekend is none other than Jay-Z, who was inducted by Obama and Dave Chappelle in a touching ceremony at the end of the night.

Dua Lipa Doesn’t Submit “Levitating” Remix With DaBaby For Grammy Consideration

When DaBaby went on a homophobic, anti-AIDS diatribe during his performance at Rolling Loud in Miami back in July, fans were quick to cancel the rapper, and the music industry wasn’t far behind. DaBaby was removed from multiple festival lineups, had multiple shows cancelled altogether, and was even removed from the credits of his smash hit with Dua Lipa, “Levitating.”

Now, despite the success of “Levitating,” Lipa has also opted to leave the record out of consideration for the 64th Annual Grammy Awards, set to take place on January 31, 2022.

In a recent report by Variety, the omission of “Levitating” from Grammy consideration was discussed, and it is believed that Lipa left the record out of the conversation to further distance herself from DaBaby following his homophobic rant.

In answering the question, “Where’s Dua Lipa’s “Levitating,” the biggest pop song of the year,” Variety‘s Chris Willman wrote that Lipa probably didn’t want to put her fans in a tough situation.

“It should have been eligible, even though it was off an album that was up for multiple awards last year — because the single had its major impact this year, and because it was a new remix, with DaBaby as an added featured artist,” Willman wrote. “But Lipa presumably could only have submitted the DaBaby, and that would have been a lot to ask of voters, to pretend that the persona-non-grata rapper really wasn’t on it. Most likely Lipa was saving voters having to agonize over choosing between their love for her and their dread of giving the thumbs-up to a guy still considered toxic by much of the industry for his homophobic comments.”

While Lipa herself has yet to make any comment on why “Levitating” was omitted from Grammy consideration, all signs point to DaBaby’s guest verse being the reason why.

What do you think of Dua Lipa keeping “Levitating” out of the Grammys? Let us know in the comments.

J. Cole Is Secretly One Of Rap’s Most Stylish Artists

Before launching his currently running Off-Season tour, J. Cole made a statement with his performance at the iHeartRadio Festival. It wasn’t a political statement, or even an announcement, though. It was a fashion statement. Rocking a tie-dye shirt, sweatpants, and black Crocs, Cole captured the attention of social media. While he’s far from the only rapper to endorse the Broomfield, Colorado shoe brand’s signature chunky, no-effort clogs, it was notable that he did so during such a high-profile performance. However, it shouldn’t be surprising; J. Cole has always secretly been one of rap’s most stylish artists.

I know what you’re thinking: “J. Cole? Stylish??” And I get it. If you’re online in any way, you’ve likely seen the Fayetteville, North Carolina rapper getting roasted for seemingly putting minimal effort into his performance fits — see the aforementioned Crocs instance. He’s never been one to shout out name brands or construct elaborate ensembles with glittering accessories dangling from his neck or wrists. He’s the ultra-regular rapper whose almost extreme relatability gets him clowned for not being flashy enough either in content or presentation.

Let’s get a few things clear, though. Fashion and style are two different things. As Cole’s mentor Jay-Z once said, “I can’t teach you my swag / You can pay for school but you can’t buy class.” Just donning a stack of expensive items bearing the brand marks of Italian designers doesn’t equate to having style; anyone can buy their way into fashion icon status with enough money. Having style means having a signature look, an ethos behind what you’re wearing besides showing off your bank account. It’s about showing people who you are. Plenty of rappers are arguably more fashionable than J. Cole but while designers’ names pop off of individual pieces, their ensembles often look like they got dressed in the dark with their stunner shades on.

Cole knows exactly what he’s going for with his looks, opting for comfort over name recognition. And yes, he too flaunts established rules about color matching and fit, he usually turns out to just be ahead of a coming trend rather than out of style. Consider his ultra laid-back looks of late. Some may consider them frumpy or lazy, but who among us didn’t give up on jeans during the pandemic in favor of layabout fits better suited to our new working from home lifestyles (I mean, those of you who didn’t already work from home)? Even his adoption of Crocs as performance wear reflects the foam clogs’ newfound popularity and cultural cachet. Industry peers like Justin Bieber, Nicki Minaj, and Post Malone have collaborated with the brand with pieces so highly demanded they’ve sold out within minutes of availability.

Maybe Cole hasn’t become a fashion icon because his simple, cozy fits reflect his down-to-earth persona a little too well. Just look at Kanye West, who’s gotten away with leather kilts, retro puffer vests, cultural appropriation (those keffiyehs didn’t bother anyone else?), and all types of other outlandish sartorial choices — including his own lazy-boy, dad-life-inspired Yeezy brand — almost solely because he presents himself as a fashion maven, going to designers’ shows and pitching fits (no pun intended) about his perceived lack of support from those in the industry.

Say what you want about Cole’s love for tie-dye and baggy joggers, at least his looks have a lot of personality. Yeezy seasons 2-6 were roundly ridiculed for being bland and lackadaisical, with Kanye seemingly re-pitching the same shapeless, earth-tone pieces year after year. Cole may not have his own brand, but his style has an identity; he isn’t just mashing together designer pieces for the sake of Frankenstein-ing the most expensive outfit for the sole purpose of flexing. You can even see how his — and Yeezy’s — respective influences have begun to spread. More and more celebrities like Bieber and Billie Eilish have already embraced the cozy lifestyle dressing for comfort over Vogue approval… And fans have naturally reciprocated. Being outside after the past year is anxiety-inducing enough; why not at least be warm (or well-ventilated), mobile, and free from worries about showing off the quarantine 15 many of us picked up after a year of UberEats (or Postmates, or DoorDash) and suspended gym memberships?

If you ask me, J. Cole always had the right idea. He’s always just dressed like himself, even as he strove to be a superstar rapper. If anything, that’s the most hip-hop thing he could’ve done. Remember when the Beastie Boys tried to dress like rappers, with their matching Adidas sweatsuits? Russell Simmons saw right through them; they looked ridiculous. Instead, he told them, they should be themselves — that would endear them far more to the culture than looking like outsiders trying to dress the part. It seemed like that would be the rule forever, but somewhere along the way, that rule got lost. Keeping it real wasn’t enough; you had to look like you were rich — which, to the newly wealthy artists of the platinum era, meant wearing all the money they were “making,” even if they were just wasting their advance money to look cool by someone else’s standard.

From the moment he arrived on the scene, J. Cole offered an antithesis to the money-hungry image often associated with major label rap acts. Sure, for a while, he got caught up in the hype himself (hello, “Mr. Nice Watch”), but in time, he grew into his status and embraced his own way of doing things. His style is a reflection of his music, which is a rejection of rap’s status quo — or maybe just a reclamation of its roots. Yes, the pioneers of the culture wanted to be fly, but they wanted to be fly their way, to show the world who they were without frills or having to code-switch to fit in. Cole doesn’t switch up for anyone else’s approval, which is really what hip-hop is all about. For that alone, he should be considered not just a style icon, but one of rap’s role models for redefining the rules and showing the world that style and substance don’t have to be opposites. Like Cole’s intricate rhymes and his mainstream success, they can counterintuitively go hand-in-hand.

Kobe Bryant Crash: Two Families Of Victims Reach Settlement With L.A. County

The second anniversary of the tragic helicopter crash that killed Kobe Bryant, his daughter Gianna, and seven others is quickly approaching. According to TMZ, two families of those who passed in the incident have reached a settlement with L.A. County while two others (including the Bryant’s) remain locked in a legal battle.

A total of $2.5 million has been approved to be split between the families of Christine Mauser and Keri, John, and Alyssa Altobelli. The former’s husband, Matthew, will received $1.25 million, and both of the Altobelli’s remaining children will split the other $1.25.

The L.A. Times broke the news of the settlement, also revealing that counsel for the county had suggested that settling with the families would be the best option, seeing as they still have lawsuits from Vanessa Bryant and Chris Chester, whose wife and child also perished in the crash. At this time, L.A. County has spent an estimated $1.29 million in legal fees.

Both of the ongoing cases could be headed for trial in the near future. A judge recently denied the county’s motion that was seeking psychiatric evaluations of both Vanessa and Chris, ruling that the request came “too late in the case.” L.A. County had previously argued that the evaluation would allow them to determine if their emotional distress was related to crash photos that were said to have been spread around by authorities.

Just yesterday, the widow penned an emotional message to her late husband on Instagram. “Always one step ahead. I’m so proud of everything you were able to accomplish. I wish you were here to celebrate. You deserve all the recognition for this. You continue being GREAT. Te amo per siempre,” she wrote, after BodyArmor, of which Bryant was a partial owner, was acquired.

August Alsina Sparks Dating Rumors With Layton Greene By Previewing New Collab

A great tool artists use for promoting upcoming music nowadays is posting snippets on Instagram. Typically, artists refrain from posting the entire length of the song, just so fans can get a glimpse of what is to come.

August Alsina approached this differently on Tuesday (Nov. 3). The Louisiana R&B singer posted a three-minute video to Instagram of himself dancing to an entire unreleased song of his featuring Layton Greene.

The song is incredibly passionate, as he sings his love for his partner with lyrics like the ones he used it the post’s caption: “You started off as the homie, took the time 2 get to know me, Elevated to my one & only.”

A post shared by Yungin’ (@augustalsina)

Alsina tagged Greene in the post, and she subsequently shared it to her Instagram story with the caption “let’s go aug” ending with a heart emoji. This gesture coupled with August’s flirty response to Layton’s comment under the post has led fans to speculate whether or not the duo are dating.

Layton first tweeted about this collaboration on Oct. 30, and after hearing what they conjured up, they may have a hit on their hands. Both August Alsina and Layton Greene have yet to release any music in 2021, but that could soon be changing with this new song.

While Alsina and Greene have yet to announce a title or release date for the track, it is equally a mystery whether or not they have began seeing one another romantically.

Do you think August and Layton are dating?

Keefe D Says He Thinks DJ Quik Set Up Biggie’s Murder

During a recent appearance on The Art of Dialogue, the uncle of Tupac Shakur’s alleged killer, Keefe D, revealed his thoughts about the 1997 murder of The Notorious B.I.G.

Keefe first revealed his belief that, if Biggie and Puff Daddy had allowed Los Angeles’ Southside Crips to act as their security the night of March 9, 1997, the late rapper would still be alive today. But more interesting were his theories about who set up the murder of The Notorious B.I.G.

According to Keefe, Biggie had given out a “gang of invitations,” for he and his crew to attend the famed Vibe magazine party held at the Petersen Automotive Museum. Upon his arrival, Keefe says Puff pulled him aside and warned that the feds had been tailing he and Biggie, and that he didn’t want the Southside Crips to catch any heat from what they had going on.

Keefe then said he went to grab a couple friends who had shown up late to the party, and saw both DJ Quik and 92.3’s radio personality, Theo.

“He was with a few of them Blood dudes,” Keefe said. “I went back up there and told Puff and them, ‘them dudes is here, y’all be careful.’ … if they hadn’t called us off, B.I.G. would still be here.”

Keefe continued on to explain that, had the Southside Crips been used as security, they would have surrounded B.I.G.’s Chevrolet Suburban, and would not have let another vehicle close to the late rapper. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen. Puff called off Keefe and his gang and, as the story goes, The Notorious B.I.G. was killed in a drive-by shooting.

Although the case has never been solved and nobody has been convicted of murdering The Notorious B.I.G., Keefe offered up his thoughts on the situation, and said he believes Theo and DJ Quik set Biggie up.

“Me myself, I think Theo and them did ’em, the DJ dude. That’s who I think did it. Him and Quik,” Keefe said. “I just think the set up went down in that type of way.”

While he did not elaborate on exactly why he believes Quik had something to do with B.I.G.’s murder, Keefe mentioned that he had seen Tha Dogg Pound crew at Puff Daddy events, and said the gang affiliations within Suge Knight’s Death Row Records made situations more intense.

“I seen Tha Dogg Pound dudes, they used to come to his events. And that’s a cold mixture that Suge had going down. He was a Blood and all his artists was all Crips. That’s a trip. That was a hell of a mixture.”

What do you think of Keefe D’s claims that DJ Quik set up the killing of The Notorious B.I.G.? Let us know in the comments.

Netflix To Launch Netflix Games On Mobile Devices Tomorrow

As many streaming services for television and movies are on the rise nowadays, their ultimate competition will always be Netflix. Netflix pioneered the streaming age we currently live in, but that status doesn’t seem to satisfy them enough anymore.

Tomorrow (Nov. 4), Netflix will grow an extra appendage and launch their Netflix Games division. The service will be for mobile devices, and available for free to all current Netflix subscribers.

In the official announcement tweet, the company states there will be no additional cost to users: “It’s early days, but we’re excited to start bringing you exclusive games, with no ads, no additional fees and no in-app purchases.”

The service will only be available to Android users to start out, as they hope to bring iOS devices along in the near future. To access the games, users will go the Neflix app, click on the “Netflix Games” tab, select their desired game and download it to their device through their phone’s app store.

Five games will be available at launch, and are exclusive to Netflix Games. Two are based on Netflix original shows: Stranger Things: 1984 and Stranger Things 3: The Game, while the other three are generic titles like Shooting Hoops, Card Blast, and Teeter Up.

But, these early games hint that Netflix will continue to create games based on the shows that their streaming platform puts out. So, as Netflix originals become popular, perhaps their accompanying games will too.

At the moment, it is not clear what the timetable is for Apple devices to gain the ability to access Netflix Games, or if gamers will be able to stream themselves playing on their mobile devices.

But, tomorrow is a huge step in the right direction for Netflix going down the gaming avenue.
