22. The 2023 Grammys

The 65th Annual Grammy Awards held unforgettable moments that left a lasting impression. It was a night of triumph for music icon Beyoncé, as she made history with an astounding 32 wins. 

With nine nominations, the highest of any artist that year, Queen Bey took home awards for categories such as “Best Dance/Electronic Recording,” “Best R&B Song,” and “Best Traditional R&B Performance.” Notably, she became the first Black woman to win the Grammy for “Best Dance/Electronic Recording” Grammy for her album Renaissance.

Backstage Drama

In the Migos‘ world, the Grammy Awards took an unexpected turn. Quavo, a former group member, paid tribute to the late Takeoff during the show’s “In Memoriam” segment with the heartfelt song “Without You.” 

However, tensions brewed between Offset and Migos behind the scenes, resulting in an argument. Offset later denied any discord among the former Migos members. 

21. Bittersweet Cultural Moments

R.I.P. Trugoy

Tragically, the hip-hop community mourned the loss of Trugoy the Dove of De La Soul, who passed away at 54 on February 12, 2023. The cause of his death remains undisclosed, leaving fans and the industry grieving the loss of a legendary hip-hop icon. 

March Madness

March Madness took the nation by storm in 2023, with college basketball teams captivating audiences across the country. Among these teams, Flau’Jae and Angel Reese from LSU stood out as they made history in the NCAA Women’s Division

Their remarkable skills and leadership led them to clinch the championship title, earning recognition in the sports world and within popular culture. 

‘Swarm’

Another significant cultural moment arose with Childish Gambino‘s acclaimed series, Swarm. 

Starring Dominique Fishback, Chloe Bailey, Damson Idris, and more, the thriller series drew immense attention. Many speculated if the show reflected “toxic stan culture” and if it was based on a prominent pop icon like Beyoncé

20. Kendrick Surpasses Drake

As spring progressed, so did Kendrick Lamar‘s stature in the music industry. 

On April 27, 2023, he surpassed Drake with the highest-grossing tour in hip-hop history, amassing a staggering $110.9 million. With his “The Big Steppers Tour” in support of his fifth studio album, Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers, Kendrick sold over 900K tickets, surpassing the record previously held by Drake’s Aubrey & The Migos Tour.

Gangsta Boo, the talented member of Three 6 Mafia, tragically met her untimely demise on January 1, 2023. As SOHH reflects on the top 23 stories of 2023, the loss of Gangsta Boo comes to mind and continues to impact many within the hip-hop community. Her sudden passing at the age of 43 deeply impacted fans who still mourn her presence today.

23. R.I.P. Gangsta Boo

As 2023 slowly comes to a close, SOHH reflects on the loss of Gangsta Boo, which took place at the beginning of the year. The late rapper’s death continues to impact many within the hip-hop community.

The late Gangsta Boo rose to prominence as a member of Three 6 Mafia, leaving an indelible mark on the rap industry. Sadly, on New Year’s Day, the music world was shaken when news broke of her passing.

The rapper’s cause of death was revealed through an autopsy, pointing to a fatal combination of fentanyl, cocaine, and alcohol. 

Crunchy Black Calls Out Late Rapper’s Brother

Throughout the year, new details surrounding Gangsta Boo’s death emerged, shedding light on the circumstances surrounding her untimely departure. 

Rapper and former member of Three 6 Mafia, Crunchy Black emerged with controversial allegations, claiming that Gangsta Boo’s brother, E Gutta, played a role in her demise. Crunchy Black took to Instagram to share screenshots of a text supposedly written by an individual who had been incarcerated with Gutta, implicating him in her death.

R.I.P. Takeoff

The loss of Gangsta Boo adds to the string of heartbreaking tragedies that the hip-hop community has witnessed in recent years. In 2022, the world mourned the loss of Takeoff, one of the founding members of Migos, who tragically lost his life at the age of 28 in a shooting incident in Houston, TX.
