“The Devil on Trial” Is Netflix’s Most Chilling Documentary Of The Season

Horror lovers will pop on a scary flick any time of year without flinching, but for the general public, most thinks goblin and ghoul related stays within the month of October. Streaming numbers for thriller and slasher films have been steadily increasing on various platforms this month, with each of them releasing their own unique original content to satisfy lovers of the spooky genre. As per usual, Netflix has delivered a wide range of shows and movies for users to stream, including a British true crime documentary called The Devil on Trial. It arrived on the streamer just last week, but already, users are ranting about how “freaked out” they are by the chilling story.

As Daily Mail notes, the project focuses on the story behind the infamous film The Conjuring 3: The Devil Made Me Do It. The 2021 film cast Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga in the roles of Ed and Lorraine Warren, a well-known paranormal investigative duo. It takes us back to 1981, when 19-year-old Arne Cheyenne Johnson brutally murdered his 40-year-old landlord, Alan Bono, in Connecticut. This marked the first killing in the town’s 193-year history, and later found the murderer giving a bizarre defense in court.

Netflix’s True Crime Library Expands with The Devil on Trial

According to Johnson, the devil literally came over him and forced him to kill Bono. The case eventually caught the attention of the Warrens, who later found out about the alleged demonic possession of Arne’s girlfriend’s little brother, David. The then-11-year-old appears in The Devil on Trial to tell his story, connecting the dots as to how his demon might have taken over Bono’s killer.

As reviews continue to pour in on Twitter, some users have confessed to being too freaked out to make it all the way through the film. Others have expressed that they’re now less sure of Ed and Lorraine’s role in things after taking a new perspective. Check out the eerie trailer for Netflix’s The Devil on Trial above.
