Do People Want Migos’ “Culture III” To Succeed?

This Friday, Migos are set to deliver Culture 3, the climactic chapter of their long-running and surprisingly controversial trilogy. While that description may be surprising to some, it’s hard not to recall the tides steadily turning against the Atlanta trifecta following the release of Culture 2. It was certainly interesting to observe from afar. Not one year prior to the project’s arrival, Migos were earning universal acclaim for the first Culture. The project was strong enough to elicit a Beatles comparison from Donald Glover. It became a recurring presence on basically every year-end best-of list. Some have even called it the definitive modern trap album.

Yet only one year later, the sequel was met with a frostier response. That’s not to say it was panned. Songs like “Narcos,” “Walk It Talk It,” “Stir Fry,” and “Motorsport” were easily some of the crew’s most successful tracks. Alas, the album’s gargantuan length — especially compared to its predecessor — was a sore spot for many. At twenty-four tracks, Culture II was largely called out for being a thinly-veiled attempt at “stream trolling,” tailored to run up numbers at the cost of being a cohesive listening experience. At a modest thirteen tracks, Culture felt intentional in its design, a quality that cemented Migos as visionaries amidst a sea of imitators. On the expansive Culture II, the mantra of bigger is better appeared to be an unspoken motivator, leading to the impression that the trio were flinging ideas at the wall and hoping something stuck.

Regardless of how one might have felt about Culture II at the time of its release, it’s hard to deny that the project kicked off a new era of Migos disillusionment. That’s not to play the role of an apologist. Offset, Quavo, and Takeoff were undeniably ubiquitous following the album’s release, to the point where many felt that their sound had come to oversaturate the entire market. Fueling that unfavorable narrative was the fact that Quavo and Takeoff both went on to deliver solo albums later that year, with Offset’s debut Father Of 4 arriving at the beginning of 2019 — though it was originally meant to drop in December. Their sound hadn’t exactly undergone any drastic changes, but it seemed as if the public was growing weary of their approach, be it the triplet flow, the autotune-tinged deliveries, or the ostentatious subject matter.

It’s unclear what was expected, or even desired. The Migos haven’t exactly changed their style throughout the years, and based on what we’ve heard from Culture III so far, the upcoming album will not be a reinvention of the wheel. Though the group has emphasized a back-to-basics approach, with Quavo having previously teased a “return to the trap,” one has to wonder how many will be willing to embrace the trifecta once again. Though the 50 Cent-sampling “Need It” might have been acclaimed were it included on Culture, Migos released the single to an audience still wary of welcoming them back with fanfare. That’s not to say reception fell flat; “Need It” and their recent single “Straightenin” have both seen heavy support on streaming services and YouTube alike. But it’s been hard to shake the pervading feeling that many are hoping Culture III marks a proverbial death knell for the once-mighty trio.

Given the circumstances surrounding the release of Culture III this Friday, as well as the current hip-hop landscape and Migos’ position within it, it will certainly be interesting to see how the project performs on the charts. Culture II, though hardly critically acclaimed, was a commercial juggernaut, debuting at number one with nearly two-hundred-thousand albums sold. For additional context, the first Culture moved impressive one-hundred-and-thirty-one units. At this moment, Culture III may be the first of the series to break tradition. And best believe, should that indeed be the case, a vocal band of detractors will be quick to let the world know it.

Considering that only a few years ago Migos were praised for their innovation and influence, it’s a testament to how tastes and trends have shifted. It’s hard to picture the Migos as outsiders, given the impact their presence has had on today’s generation of hip-hop newcomers, but it’s starting to feel like Culture III is more of a high-stakes endeavor than initially believed. There appear to be a contingent of listeners praying for the group’s demise, and anything less than peak performance would surely be the catalyst for smug celebration. On the other hand, their newfound position as slight underdogs might endear them to a new audience, setting the table for Culture 3 to be perceived as a redemption arc of sorts.

With the project only a few days, perhaps it’s time to consider which camp you stand in — if any. Sound off in the comments if you’re excited for Culture III, which features guest appearances from Drake, Future, Pop Smoke, Juice WRLD, and more.

Goldlink Disses Sheck Wes On Twitter & Praises Azealia Banks

Goldlink made his fiery return to music on Wednesday (June 9) with the debut of his new single “White Walls.” Alongside the release of single, the DMV native announced his forthcoming LP. Coming back to social media to share the new music, his return to Twitter was marked with a bang.

On Wednesday, in a series of tweets, the rapper reignited his existing tension with Sheck Wes, all while praising Azealia Banks and announcing when to expect the arrival of his next LP.

“F*kk u Sheck Wes,” began the rapper in all caps. He continued firing shots at the Cactus Jack rapper with, “Ima drink some cacti and spit on your white tee you dirty butt n*gga.” He continued in a second tweet, “And Sheck it ain’t my fault data ya men jumped out, got spanked then ya mans got shot.” He took a jab at Wes’ appearance in another one.

These shots come after Goldlink already called out the rapper in his new single. “F*ck Sheck Wes,” spits Goldlink on the track.

After firing shots at Wes, he switched gears a bit, instead giving Azealia Banks her flowers. “Also while in here. I must say Azealia Banks is one of the best artists of our generation and must be respected,” tweeted the “Best Rapper in the F*ckin World” artist.

He finished the brief rant with an official album announcement, revealing HARAM! will be out June 18th.

Tierra Whack Shows Love For The Philadelphia 76ers’ Playoff Push In The Patriotic ’76’ Video

The Philadelphia 76ers are 1-1 with the Atlanta Hawks in the NBA’s Eastern Conference semifinals as the series leaves the City of Brotherly Love and heads down south to The Big Peach. To see them off, though, the 76ers’ Phila Unite campaign tapped one of the city’s rising musical stars in Tierra Whack, who shows her hometown pride with a rap shouting out the team’s members like Joel Embid and Tobias Harris in “76.”

Over a marching band-inspired beat that sounds like Missy Elliott’s “Pass That Dutch” had a baby with an HBCU drumline, Tierra flips the stars’ names with wordplay like “Shake Milton makes millions” and “Doc Rivers layin’ up with winners.” The video sees Tierra watching the Sixers play on an old school box TV set, holding up cardboard cutouts of the players’ heads, and showing off her own hoop skills as she dribbles and shoots a jumper on an invisible hoop.

Whack isn’t the only rapper putting on for her city in the series. Migos’ Quavo attended game 1 in Philly, with his over-the-top reactions capturing Twitter’s attention and either amusing or enraging fans (depending on who they were rooting for). Does that mean we’ll see someone like Meek Mill turn up at State Farm Arena to troll Atlanta fans in the same fashion? Let’s hope so; after last year’s bubble, more fan engagement can only be a good thing.

Mariah Carey Leaves Roc Nation After Shutting Down Rumors Of A Split With Jay-Z

Although Mariah Carey denied a report that she’d had an “explosive” falling out with longtime business partner Jay-Z over her Roc Nation management, it appears that she has indeed decided to part ways with Roc Nation. Billboard and Variety report Carey has moved from Roc Nation to Range Media Partners, following her former Roc Nation manager Melissa Ruderman, who switched companies in January.

Ruderman was Carey’s day-to-day manager in 2005 when the star was managed by Benny Medina, handling the rollout for the 2005 album The Emancipation of Mimi. At Roc Nation, Ruderman helped put together deals for Carey’s Las Vegas residencies, the publishing contract that led to the bestselling memoir The Meaning of Mariah Carey, and a TV deal with Apple. Ruderman joined the recently formed Range Media Partners just a few short months after its launch in September last year.

The rumor that Mariah had switched management was first hinted at in a report in British tabloid The Sun, which wrote that a meeting between Carey and Jay-Z “did not go well at all” after the two disagreed on rollout plans for a more R&B-centered album. However, Mariah took the tabloid to task in a tweet recalling the success of Mariah and Jay’s no.1 hit “Heartbreaker.”

“The only ‘explosive’ situation I’d ever ‘get into’ with Hov is a creative tangent, such as our #1 song ‘Heartbreaker!!’” she wrote. “To the people who make up these lies I say ‘Poof! —Vamoose, sonofa*****”!’”

French President Emmanuel Macron Slapped In The Face While Visiting Small Village

Regardless of the country, some political tension is always expected, but one French villager took his political ideology a bit far on Tuesday. Emmanuel Macron, the current French president, was visiting a small town in the south of France earlier this week, and upon seeing a group of locals he jogged towards them to greet them. Shortly after he started shaking hands, one person in the crowd got a clean look and slapped Macron in the face.

According to NPR, the person who slapped Macron yelled, “Montjoie Saint-Denis, à bas la Macronie,” which combines a 12th-century royalist slogan that’s commonly used today by the far right with the phrase, “down with Macronism.”

After getting slapped, Macron almost looked as if he was prepared to swing back at the perpetrator, but the French president’s security detail swiftly removed him from the situation. In an interview with a local newspaper, Macron severely played down the incident, saying, “Everything is fine. You have to relativize this incident, which is I think an isolated one. We can’t let this take over the public discussion of more important issues which concern everyone’s lives. They don’t deserve it.”

Check out the video of Emmanuel Macron getting slapped below.

Joe Biden’s Son Hunter Accused Of Calling His White Lawyer The N-Word

Hunter Biden, the son of President Joe Biden, has been plagued by scandals throughout the last few years. During the 2020 U.S. Presidential Election, Hunter was mentioned in both debates as Trump argued that President Biden improperly intervened when it was alleged that Hunter has business dealings in Ukraine and China. He’s officially been named in yet another controversy– this time, Hunter Biden is accused of repeatedly calling his white lawyer the n-word in text messages.

The allegations were initially reported by Daily Mail before being picked up by Forbes, however, the Forbes article was taken down without explanation. The strange and occasionally lewd text messages that were reportedly sent from the First Son to his lawyer are detailed below.

“How much money do I owe you,” he allegedly asked. “Becaause [sic] n***a you better not be charging me Hennessy rates.” His attorney, Chicago-based George Mesires, responded, “That made me snarf my coffee.” “I just made that phrase up, by the way,” replied Hunter. “I should have [h]ad your lineage.”

Later on in the conversation, Hunter reportedly sent messages about his penis to his lawyer. “Its [sic] big penis George,” he said. “They always find it. I only love you because you’re black.” Again, his lawyer is a white man.

Meek Mill Links With Lil Baby, Robert Kraft & More At The Sixers Game

Robert Kraft reached a milestone 80 years old recently. With the help of his famous friends, he’s been having a blast celebrating. Earlier this week, Jay-Z, Meek Mill, and Michael Rubin, who are fellow members of the REFORM alliance, gifted the New England Patriots a rare blue Bentley.

“How the fudge did you get it? ‘Cause we couldn’t get it,” Kraft remarked the billionaire after receiving the gift. “We got resources,” Rubin responded. To continue the celebrations, the REFORM Alliance crew, along with Lil Baby and others, linked up courtside at the Sixers vs. Hawks game last night in Philly.

“Sixers vs hawks game,” penned the “Going Bad” artist in the caption of a photo set showing the night’s events. Beginning the photoset with a solo shot throwing up peace signs, he followed up with a shot of himself, Michael Rubin, and 4PF’s very own Lil Baby posing on the court for a photo.

In the next shot, Rubin, Kraft, Meek, and Baby all sit alongside each other in courtside seats. He also shared a subsequent shot of him and fellow REFORM Alliance members alongside fellow artist and Philadelphia native Tierra Whack.

It looks like Robert Kraft is surely having a blast celebrating his 80th birthday.

Megan Thee Stallion Is Becoming Megan Thee Lecturer

Megan Thee Stallion has placed an emphasis on her education, completing her degree in Health Care Administration at Texas Southern University while she’s busy winning Grammy Awards. The multi-platinum recording artist may be one of the most popular rappers in the world but she’s making sure that she continues setting herself up for success. She won’t have an issue paying off her student loans but the reality is that many students will spend years getting rid of their debts, so Megan is doing what she can to help.

On Wednesday, it was announced via press release that Megan Thee Stallion will be providing a four-year, full-tuition scholarship to one student at the Roc Nation School of Music, Sports and Entertainment at Long Island University. Megan’s scholarship opportunity will open up for the upcoming fall semester, and students can apply for it here.

Getting an education is incredibly important to me,” said the rapper in a statement.I still have academic goals that I want to achieve, so if I can use my resources to open doors and create opportunities for at least one student, then it’s a victory. It’s important that we encourage our students to pursue their passions and put them in positions to become the next game changer in whichever fields they choose.”

In addition to offering a scholarship, Stalli will also become Megan Thee Lecturer, speaking to students as part of the “Industry Expert Speaker Series.”

A few weeks ago, it was announced that 9th Wonder was teaching a course on rap history at the Roc Nation School of Music, Sports and Entertainment. Read more about that here.
