Lawsuits seem to keep following Ye. The Yeezy’s mogul is wrestling in a new legal battle, this time in a California federal court over allegations of unauthorized use of other musicians’ work in two of his “Donda” tracks featured in his critically acclaimed 2021 album.
Onto the plaintiff. The suit was filed by Artist Revenue Advocates on Wednesday, asserting that Ye used a composition “Hurricane” and “Moon” created by Khalil Abdul-Rahman, Sam Barsh, Dan Seeff, and Josh Mease in his songs on “Donda” without obtaining permission or compensating them despite acknowledging their contributions as songwriters and producers.
. Same ol’ same ol’ song in the industry. Not paying people or valuing the work of those who are NOT in position.
As expected, media outlets requests for comments from the plaintiffs’ attorneys and representatives of Universal Music Group, Ye’s former label that released “Donda,” went unanswered on Thursday. Furthermore, Ye’s reps were unavailable for comment. One has to ask, can they even get him on the phone? In his suit where he allegedly assaulted a fan outside of Soho Warehouse in Los Angeles, that attorney representing Ye, was having difficulty communicating with Ye, and asked to be removed from the case.
Get this, the plaintiffs, including Grammy Award-winning musicians who have collaborated with prominent rap artists like Eminem, Drake, and Kendrick Lamar, created “MSD PT2” in 2018. This track served as a “rhythmic and melodic foundation that supports certain lyrics and flow” and was included in a “composer pack” intended for potential buyers. So basically, they are not some fly by night amateurs.
In the filing, the complaint alleges that Ye duplicated “MSD PT2” in his songs “Hurricane” and “Moon.” Notably, “Hurricane” achieved top 10 status on the Billboard Hot 100 and earned a Grammy for Best Melodic Rap Performance in 2022.
The plaintiffs are seeking unspecified monetary damages, and obviously, a court order to prevent further alleged infringement.
