John Legend returns with your fix of R&B.
Just in time for summer, the EGOT winner brings the feel-good vibes on his new single “Dope.” The intoxicating track was produced by Ian Kirkpatrick and Ryan Tedder and co-written by Charlie Puth.
“She’s so dope / She can be my dope queen / We could make a dope scene,” he sings, while J.I.D. serenades his lady: “‘Cause I’m addicted to your smile like a flower that grows in the wild in Colombia that paid Pablo.”
Speaking with Apple Music 1, Legend praised his Dreamville collaborator. “He’s incredible, he’s such a gifted lyricist,” he said. “He’s got such great charisma and great energy and we were looking for the perfect artist to join with me on this record. We were just listening to his body of work and thinking of what we could do on the track. We sent it to him and he loved the track and wanted to get on it and man… he murdered it.”
Legend is now readying his first album since 2020’s Bigger Love, which will feature collaborations with Jhené Aiko, Ty Dolla $ign, Jazmine Sullivan, Rick Ross, Rapsody, and Muni Long.
You can also catch him live at his Las Vegas residency, “Love in Las Vegas,” which includes dates in August and October.
