Charlamagne recently took issue with Timbaland’s use of A.I. technology to get a feature from the late Notorious B.I.G. for a new song. The Breakfast Club host says that the technology takes the “soul” out of the music. Timbaland teased the track on Instagram, last week.
“Sonically, it sounds cool but it lacks soul. There’s no spirit to it,” Charlamagne said. “There’s just nothing to it. That’s why I don’t like that.” He further argued, “I just feel like there’s no spirit to this music. Even when they do it with artists who are still with us, it don’t feel like there’s no spirit to it. There’s no soul to it so it definitely sounds spiritless when it’s people who are no longer with us.”

Fans in the comments section of The Hip-Hop Wolf’s reposting of the clip were mostly in agreement with Charlamagne. “Will that let these rappers rest in peace. I hear big saying its wack,” one wrote. Another compared the vocals to Rick Ross: “Honestly that sounds like Ross it don’t sound like Biggie at all.” One more brought up Drake’s previous use of Aaliyah’s vocals. “This is expected from a new young producer, not a legendary producer that was around when Big was alive.,” they wrote. “No integrity, he can’t do this then get mad when Drake used Aaliyah’s vocals am i missing something?”
Timbaland explained his decision to use the A.I. Biggie vocals in a post on Instagram, last week. “We know that it’s a lot of talk about AI, and we know how the feelings of violating certain things… But let me tell you something, I got a solution, we’re working on it. It’s gonna be beneficial to everybody,” he argued. “But, in the meantime, I gotta share something I’ve been working on because I always wanted to do this and I never got a chance to. I always wanted to work with Big, and I never got a chance to, until today! It came out right! Play!”
