Caitlin Clark’s WNBA Salary Sparks Discussion

Caitlin Clark was drafted by the Indiana Fever with the number one pick in the WNBA draft Monday night. The most decorated woman in college sports has been must-see TV in college, where she starred for Iowa. Now she has all eyes on her and the WNBA, leading a stacked draft class and, hopefully, a boom in popularity for the league. Clark led Iowa to the national championship game, where the Hawkeyes lost to South Carolina. The final game was the first time the women’s tournament got more viewers than the men’s, and Clark was the biggest reason.

It is well known that the WNBA isn’t at the NBA’s level when it comes to salaries. Moreover, it’s a league that is still young and growing. Caitlin Clark’s rookie contract was revealed during the draft, and the numbers were startling for such a big star. Fans and those tuning in due to the popularity of the recent women’s NCAA tournament were shocked. Nevertheless, it’s a reminder of how far the WNBA still has to go.

Caitlin Clark’s Rookie Salary Revealed

Caitlin Clark’s salary pales in comparison to her NBA counterparts. Many fans were in disbelief at how much that salary is for such a famous and generationally talented player. Those unfamiliar with the grind of the WNBA are in for a reality check. Many longtime fans are excited about Clark and players like Angel Reese because of their potential to draw eyes to the women’s game. More eyes and better ratings equal more money, which is why the league is pushing its newest star so heavily. It is still shocking to see it spelled out so clearly.

Caitlin Clark is ok, though. If you watched the draft, you probably saw her in at least three different commercials. The NIL rules in college allowed stars like Clark and Reese to make money off their talent. Her WNBA salary is probably pocket change compared to her endorsement deal with State Farm. Many WNBA players go overseas to play when the season is over to make significantly more money. Caitlin Clark has put a big spotlight on the WNBA. A lot is riding on her success at the next level.

WNBA To Loosen Charter Flight Rules

One of the most common complaints that have plagued the WNBA in recent years is charter flights. Prior to 2019, all WNBA team flights were done commercially. This often meant long and convoluted travel times for players. In 2018, the Las Vegas Aces lost an entire travel day due to canceled and rescheduled flights. To make matters worse, the league came down heavily on teams that gave its players charter flights. In 2022, the New York Liberty were fined $500,000 for unauthorized charter flights.

Things have incrementally improved under Commissioner Cathy Engelbert. Upon taking the commissioner role in 2019, she implemented charter flights for playoff games where a team would have to cross multiple time zones in a day. In 2022, charter flights were applied to the entire WNBA finals and the visiting team of the Commissoner’s Cup. However, the issue is still a pertinent one. Tennessee center Tamari Key went as far as to cite the issue as part of the reason she was returning to college for another year. The league has been resistant to allow charters, citing a desire for “competitive balance”.

WNBA Approves Charters For Back-To-Backs

In a press release ahead of the 2023 WNBA Draft, the WNBA announced that charter flights would once again be expanded. According to the release, the WNBA would allow teams to arrange charters in the event of games on back-to-back days. Charter flights would also be available for the entirety of the playoffs. However, it’s not the sweeping change players were hoping for. There are just five instances of a team playing back-to-back games during the 2023 season. Furthermore, Engelbert told the Associated Press that the policy would be re-evaluated ahead of the Olympics-impacted 2024 season.

The move is a sign of growth and change for the league, but for many, it’s not enough. Many experts have pointed to much more substantial growth of the NWSL, the nation’s premier women’s soccer league, in comparison. Furthermore, with potential WNBA talent like Key citing charters as a reason to stay away from the league, it could quickly become a league-threatening issue. But for now, the WNBA appears content with its limited expansion of charter flights.

If not for trading Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout in December 2022, Griner would still be detained in Russia for her original nine-year sentence. However, Griner remains on US soil with her wife, Cherelle Griner, 30, and WNBA family, preparing herself for the 2023 season with Phoenix Mercury.

Brittney Griner To Make Big Decision On WNBA Future

Brittney Griner is currently making massive headlines thanks to the fact that she was officially released from prison last Thursday. The WNBA superstar had been in Russia for 10 months due to drug possession. Of course, she simply had a small weed cartridge on her, however, the Russian system made an example out of her.

Luckily, Griner is back home and is spending some much-needed time surrounded by family. This is great news for the basketball world, as Griner is a huge pioneer for the WNBA. Overall, fans are very excited to see her back on a court soon.

Brittney Griner Remains Undecided

In a report from ESPN, it was revealed by BG’s agent Lindsay Kagawa Colas that she had yet to make a decision on whether or not she will play again. While Griner did participate in a workout this weekend, the WNBA star still has a lot on her mind.

“If she wants to play, it will be for her to share. She has the holidays to rest and decide what’s next without any pressure,” Colas said. “She’s doing really, really well. She seems to have endured this in pretty incredible ways.

“There’s no timeline on her return at this point. She’s reintegrating into a world that has changed for her now. From a pure security standpoint she’s not going to be able to move in the world the way she did. It’s not a fate that she asked for, but I think she’s going to try to utilize her fame for good.”

Brittney Griner Release Leads To Heartwarming Reactions

Brittney Griner’s stay in a Russian prison has been incredibly difficult. For those who haven’t been keeping track, Griner had been detained since February. This was the result of Griner carrying weed cartridges in her carry-on while trying to leave the country.

Consequently, Griner was hit with a nine-year prison sentence. Additionally, she was recently sent to a labor camp where the conditions are horrid. During this time, there was a lot of pessimism in terms of whether or not the United States would bring her home.

Brittney Griner Freed Thanks To Prisoner Swap, Joe Biden Reacts

Brittney Griner was sentenced to nine years in a Russian prison just a few months ago. It was a brutal ruling after the WNBA star was caught with weed cartridges at a Russian airport. Subsequently, she was hit with trafficking and possession charges.

Her time in prison has not been easy. In fact, Griner was sent to a labor camp just last month. Additionally, these labor camps are extremely brutal as prisoners are forced to work upwards of 16 hours per day. It is truly brutal stuff and many were worried for Griner’s safety.

President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris were even able to speak with Griner as she got on a plane back home. “Moments ago I spoke to Brittney Griner. She’s safe. She is on a plane. She is on her way home,” the President wrote on Twitter.

Consequently, many are excited about this news. Griner’s story is one that people have followed for quite a while now. Although she has suffered trauma during her prison experience, there is no doubt that she is excited to be on her way home. Overall, this is a great day for the WNBA superstar.
