The allegations revolve around an incident that reportedly took place in September 2021 in Oxford, where he is accused of both oral and vaginal penetration of a woman without her consent.

Frampton made his court appearance via video link before the Oxfordshire magistrates. During this appearance, he confirmed his name, address in Northampton, and date of birth. As of June 2015, he entered a not-guilty plea for two charges against him. Slowthai Has Pleaded Not Guilty To Two Charges Of Raping A Woman

In May, it was revealed that Slowthai (real name Tyron Frampton) had been charged with rape. Now, the rapper has officially entered his plea at a Crown court in Oxford, England: Pitchfork reports that Slowthai has pleaded not guilty to two charges of raping a woman in 2021. The charges are for alleged oral and vaginal rape.

Slowthai appeared alongside another man, Alex Blake Walker, who also pleaded not guilty, to two charges of rape and another of sexual assault. The trial is set to commence on July 1, 2024. Both were granted bail on the condition that “they keep their solicitors informed of where they are living.”

In a statement shared in May shortly after charges were pressed, the rapper wrote, “Regarding the allegations being reported about me. I categorically deny the charges. I am innocent and I am confident my name will be cleared. Until then I will apply my energy to ensure this is concluded swiftly and justly. I ask that my supporters don’t comment about this situation and respect the process and privacy of my family during this time.”

After the charges were made public, Slowthai was dropped from the Glastonbury and Reading & Leeds festival lineups. This all comes shortly after the release of Slowthai’s latest album, Ugly, in March.

Slowthai’s Biggest Collaborations

Slowthai has garnered a reputation for having a knack for hit-making collaborations throughout his career. However, it’s been a rough week for Britain’s iconic MC. On Monday, the 28-year-old was hit with two counts of raping a woman in Oxford, England back in 2021. After the news, he was dropped from a slew of festival bookings throughout the UK, including Glastonbury, Reading & Leeds, and Parklife. Released on bail after an online hearing, his official court appearance has been set for June 16, where he will appear in front of the Oxford Crown Court. Via an Instagram post, he’s already denied the allegations, asking for fans to give him and his family space.

The accusation is a big hit to what has been a blossoming career. Pioneering a new wave of punk rap throughout the UK, he’s re-invigorated the regions’ hip-hop scene on a worldwide scale. He’s curated hit collaborations with artists from the UK and abroad, propelling him to a Grammy nod and multiple chart-hitting songs. Back in March, he released his third studio album Ugly. In light of the album’s release, Slowthai has received a strong reception for his dark lyricism and punk-based production amidst iconic collaborations.

7. “DOORMAN” Ft. Mura Masa (2018)

For many fans, “Doorman” was their introduction to Slowthai. A collaboration with electronic UK producer Mura Masa, “Doorman” remains the most commercially successful song in Slowthai’s growing discography. Slowthai drives the listener through a wild night out, chronicling a night of cigarettes and binge drinking. While Mura Masa is usually known for upbeat dance-pop, he would instead opt for menacing guitar licks and distortion on the aggressive track. Moreover, Slowthai attacks wealth disparity on “Doorman,” expressing his disdain for “high society.” The track would eventually solidify his presence on the worldwide stage of hip-hop.

6. “FEEL AWAY” Ft. James Blake & Mount Kimbie (2020)

The lead single for Slowthai’s sophomore album Tyron, “feel away” symbolized a distinct narrative shift in his career. While his debut studio album Nothing Great About Britain was primarily a criticism of social ills that go unaddressed, Tyron was far more introspective and relative to Slowthai’s personal life. Recruiting James Blake joins slowthai on the song, which they recorded in Los Angeles. A stark contrast to his usual punk production, the somber guitar strings of “feel away” parallel the anniversary of his late brother’s passing.

5. “MAZZA” Ft. A$AP Rocky (2021)

Slowthai garnered his biggest collaboration to date on “MAZZA.” Featuring a booming 808 and an excellent verse from A$AP Rocky, slowthai’s punk sensibilities lean into the Harlem rapper’s boundary-pushing ear for production. In reference to their collaboration, Rocky stated, “I met him by looking at his work. When I saw his work, I was an instant fan. What I love about him and what I see parallel with us is we don’t f**k with a lot of people…”. That sentimental energy from Slowthai and Rocky would translate directly into “MAZZA.” The two of them flex money and fame for a celebratory anthem. Consequently, the track fits seamlessly into the banger-heavy side of Tyron.

4. Disclosure – “MY HIGH” Ft. slowthai & Aminé (2020)

A collaboration with Disclosure and Amine, the high-energy dance track would mark Slowthai’s first and only Grammy nomination for Best Dance Recording. Slowthai’s successful verse cemented his chameleon-esque tendencies as a rapper, proving that he could steal the show over electronic production or a punk-grunge odyssey. In fact, it wasn’t the first time he would dabble in the electronic world. He also worked with Flume on “High Beams.”

3. “CANCELLED” Ft. Skepta (2021)

While “MAZZA” stole the show as the hallmark banger off of Tyron, “CANCELLED” was a close second. A UK anthem through and through, Slowthai and Skepta conducted a rage-filled collaboration for the second track of the project. Introducing us with a soothing flute, the track quickly morphs into a bass-filled banger. The title of the track is in direct reference to Slowthai’s appearance at the NME Awards back in February 2020, when many condemned his unhinged behavior towards the host, Katherine Ryan.

2. Gorillaz – “MOMENTARY BLISS” Ft. Slowthai and Slaves (2020)

No matter how big an artist is, collaborating with Gorillaz will always be a career-defining moment. Even though the English virtual band is one of the biggest music groups in the world, they’re highly picky about who they collaborate with on their projects, often opting for sensibility over popularity. The eleventh track off of Song Machine, Season One: Strange Timez, “Momentary Bliss” is rooted in shoegaze indie guitar chords and a fair bit of distortion. Surprisingly, it would become the most successful track from the album, bringing in over 50 million streams on Spotify.

1. Brockhampton – “HEAVEN BELONGS TO YOU” Ft. Slowthai (2019)

Before Brockhampton’s Ginger, the hip-hop boy band hadn’t often collaborated with artists outside of their circle. However, the dramatic departure of Ameer Vann forced them to look outwards. One of their first features came in the form of “Heaven Belongs To You” ft. Slowthai, who’s the driving force on the song. Fittingly enough, the track falls within a dark corner of the record. Slowthai’s verse mirrors the grim mindset of Brockhampton, blankly stating, “Immerse myself in discontent.” In addition, his verse epitomizes the religious themes throughout Ginger.

Slowthai Has Been Dropped From The Glastonbury, Reading, And Leeds Festivals After He Was Charged With Rape

After being charged with two counts of rape on Tuesday (May 16), English rapper Slowthai has been removed from the lineups of several festivals for which he was booked this year. Glastonbury and Reading & Leeds both took the rapper’s name off their lineups, according to Rolling Stone, although neither has yet made an official announcement or statement. Slowthai, whose 2019 debut album Nothing Great About Britain was nominated for a Mercury Prize, denied the charges in a statement on Twitter. He’s due to appear at Oxford Crown Court in June.

“I categorically deny the charges,” he wrote on Twitter. “I am innocent and I am confident my name will be cleared. Until then I will apply my energy to ensure this is concluded swiftly and justly. I ask that my supporters don’t comment about this situation and respect the process and privacy of my family during this time.”

Despite losing his spots at Glastonbury — set for June 21-25 — and Reading & Leeds — August 25-27 — Rolling Stone notes that Slowthai still appears to be booked for a performance at OVO Arena Wembley alongside Blur and Self Esteem.

In March, Slowthai released his third album, UGLY (U Gotta Love Yourself), with the song “Selfish” via Method Records.

Who Is Slowthai?

Flamboyant British rapper Slowthai has officially been charged with two counts of rape. The alleged incident dates back to 2021 in Oxford, England. The rapper, named Tyron Kaymone Frampton, has already appeared in court and been released on bail. He’s officially appearing at the Oxford Crown Court on June 16th. Slowthai has promptly come out and denied the allegations. On Instagram, he stated, “I am innocent and I am confident my name will be cleared. Until then I will apply my energy to ensure this is concluded swiftly and justly. I ask that my supporters don’t comment about this situation and respect the process and privacy of my family during this time.”

While these charges are (by far) the most serious to be levied against Slowthai, it’s not the first time he’s been in the spotlight for the wrong reasons. Slowthai was “canceled” in February 2020 when he made several explicit jokes with comedian Katherine Ryan at the NME Awards. He proceeded to get into an altercation with a member of the audience. The controversy would spark the narrative content of his sophomore studio album, Tyron.

Slowthai Worked Multiple Jobs Before Music

Slowthai comes from humble beginnings. Raised in Northampton, he went to college to study music technology. However, a young Slowthai frequently skipped school to create at a nearby recording studio. After college in the East Midlands of England, Tyron Frampton had multiple temporary employment stints before he made it in music. In fact, he was fired from Next after giving his friends employee discounts.

It wasn’t until 2016 that Slowthai would have his breakout with “Jiggle.” Featuring a minimal drum-based beat, he rapped about struggling to pay rent while hinting at his debut project, Nothing Great About Britain. The track wasn’t exactly an international hit. However, it was enough to get him in the same room with other successful record labels and artists in the area. After the song, he would continue to release a slew of mixtapes that gained a decent bit of attention. In 2017, he signed his recording contract with Method Records, later releasing Nothing Great About Britain.

Slowthai’s Charges Threaten The UK Rap Scene

While Slowthai garnered plenty of critical acclaim in the UK scene from 2016 to 2018, Nothing Great About Britain delivered his music globally. Screaming his heart out amidst distinct punk-rap production, tracks such as “Doorman” and “Inglorious” featuring Skepta introduced the world to an aggressive yet measured MC. By 2019, Slowthai was a global sensation, even contributing guest vocals on Tyler, the Creator’s “What’s Good” on Igor. In addition, he’s appeared on a variety of Brockhampton cuts.

Slowthai would go on to release Tyron in 2021. A year after his controversial appearance at the NME Awards, the record saw the then 27-year-old as vulnerable as ever regarding his flaws. While Nothing Great About Britain was more of a personal outrage towards the gray monotony of UK life, Tyron saw him take a hard look in the mirror. However, he still worked bangers such as “CANCELLED” featuring Skepta and “MAZZA” featuring A$AP Rocky into the mix.

He Recently Released His Third Studio Album, “Ugly”

In March of 2023, he released his third studio album Ugly. His most polarizing record to date, Slowthai completely ditched traditional rap tropes. Instead, he solidifies the punk sub-genre of rap that he’s worked to popularize over the past five years. Slowthai sings more than ever on the record, with tracks such as “Selfish” and “Feel Good” gaining immediate critical acclaim. An angsty record at its core, existential questions surrounding the meaning of his existence takes Ugly‘s forefront.

As previously mentioned, Ugly has received various opinions from critics. His most wild and unfiltered record to date, Pitchfork‘s review of the project wasn’t exactly an endorsement of the project. However, others praise the record’s subject matter surrounding addiction, anger issues, and impulsivity. Its sonic pallets dive between a wide range of influences, from David Bowie to Fontaines D.C. If the charges against Slowthai hold, it would be a massive loss for the UK music scene.

Slowthai is just as well-known for his ADHD-induced personality as his music. Having a knack for ditching class and getting fired from his 9 to 5s, he’s never been one to mince his personality for anybody else. “I’m always going off on tangents,” he states, “sorry about that.” Of course, he’s saying all of this with a cheeky smile. That energy has translated well to the mainstage, with the energetic MC being a go-to recording artist for concertgoers. Approaching 30 years old, he’s looked to become a source of inspiration for UK rappers coming up before him. One of the pioneers of the UK’s rap scene, plenty of underground talents are yet to make it big out of the area.

Slowthai ‘Categorically Denies’ The Rape Accusations Against Him: ‘I Am Confident My Name Will Be Cleared’

Earlier today, it was reported that British rapper Slowthai appeared in court on charges of oral and vaginal penetration of a woman without consent — in other words, rape. While details were scarce, it was reported that Slowthai, whose real name is Tyron Frampton, appeared to confirm his indictment, identity, and address, then was given bail and a new hearing date next month before a crown court, which is one of the three senior courts of England and Wales. The incident was said to take place in September 2021.

Slowthai responded to the accusations against him in a statement on Twitter. “Regarding the allegations being reported about me,” he wrote. “I categorically deny the charges. I am innocent and I am confident my name will be cleared. Until then I will apply my energy to ensure this is concluded swiftly and justly. I ask that my supporters don’t comment about this situation and respect the process and privacy of my family during this time.”

In 2019, Slowthai garnered popular acclaim with the release of his debut album, Nothing Great About Britain. The album was nominated for the Mercury Prize and since then, he’s risen in stature, contributing vocals to projects from American artists like Brockhampton, Denzel Curry, James Blake, Tyler The Creator, and more. His most recent album, UGLY (U Gotta Love Yourself, was released on March 3 this year, reaching No. on the UK’s Billboard albums chart equivalent.

Slowthai Was Charged With Rape In England

British rapper Slowthai, who has been charged with rape, appeared in court earlier today via video link to answer the charges, according to The Guardian. Slowthai, whose real name is Tyron Frampton, confirmed his name, date of birth, and address in Northampton, while the prosecution lawyer told Oxfordshire magistrates that the charge — stemming from a September 2021 incident in Oxford — was an “indictable-only” offense, recommending the case be heard at crown court.

Few details were given about the alleged incident other than to report that the 28-year-old rapper is accused of oral and vaginal penetration of a woman without consent. Slowthai was bailed out and will appear in court next month.

The rapper is no stranger to controversy. In February 2020, he apologized for some unruly behavior at the NME Awards, where he grabbed the host on stage and started a fight in the audience before being removed by security. Last summer, he apologized again, this time for wearing a shirt bearing what appeared to be a swastika onstage at Montreal’s Osheaga Festival — although the shirt had an overall anti-fascist message, putting the word “Destroy” over the offensive symbol.

Still, this is the most serious offense he’s been charged with since he first burst onto the scene in 2015.

Gorillaz Got De La Soul, Thundercat, And More Guests For Their Electric Coachella Performance

Given their range of collaborations with artists, it was not surprise that Gorillaz had a lot of special guests for their Coachella set Friday. The band kicked things off by bringing out Thundercat, who played “Cracker Island,” the title track off their most recent album.

Shortly after, Damon Albarn brought out Peven Everett for “Strobelite” and Jamie Principle for “Hollywood.” After a brief interlude in which the band played “Andromeda,” Albarn brought out Bootie Brown to perform “New Gold.”

For one of Gorillaz’s best-known songs, “On Melancholy Hill,” Albarn dedicated it to his daughter, Missy.

Brown returned later in the show to play “Dirty Harry.” Next up was Slowthai, who dropped by to perform “Momentary Bliss,” one of Gorillaz’s songs from their record Song Machine.

The band closed out with some classics, with Del The Funky Homosapien playing “Rock The House” before returning for the closer, “Clint Eastwood.”

In between, De La Soul did “Feel Good Inc.,” giving the crowd a chance to hear all their favorite Gorillaz standards.

“Dave would’ve loved being out there,” one fan who uploaded the performance noted, referencing the late Trugoy.
