Peso Pluma Cancels Multiple Concerts Amid Cartel Threats

Peso Pluma, the wildly popular Mexican musician, rescheduled several concerts this week without warning. Shows between September 15 and 17 in Milwaukee, Chicago, Indianapolis, and Birmingham were quietly axed. Furthermore, ticketing sites promised a rescheduling date. At the time of writing, Pluma is next scheduled to perform in Chula Vista, California on September 30.

No official reason has been given for the cancelation. However, many believe it is related to the cartel death threats Pluma received earlier in the week. As Pluma attended the VMAs on September 12, a number of banners appeared around Tijuana, Mexico. “This goes to Peso Pluma, refrain from presenting yourself on October 14, because it will be your last show due to your disrespect and loose tongue. You show up and we are going to break you,” one of the banners read. Several of the banners were signed with the initials of the Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generación. JNG is of the largest cartels in Mexico. Mexican authorities are investigating the credibility of the threats.

Why Is The Cartel Targeting Peso Pluma?

According to Tijuana mayor Montserrat Caballero, Pluma and other artists become cartel targets through their music. “Let’s be clear: They sing and make an apology of crime and thus they should know the risk and consequences,” Caballero told the New York Times. Furthermore, Caballero said the decision to cancel Pluma’s October 14 concert would be based on whether the investigation determined the banners, locally referred to as narcomantas, to be legitimately from a cartel. Additionally, Pluma has been recently criticized by Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. Obrador took issue with “AMG”, stating that “As if material things were the most important things — brand clothes, houses, jewelry, power or arrogance.”

However, Pluma is not the only musician who has faced threats from the cartel. Natanael Cano recently stopped midway through “Cuerno Azulado” and declared that it was “going to get him killed”. The song makes reference to drug deals, government corruption, and even infamous cartel leader El Chapo. As far back as February, ticket vendors have been offering refunds for Pluma’s Tijuana show. This option was offered due to “due to insecurity and threats towards other events.”

Who Is Peso Pluma?

Peso Pluma was nominated for three awards — Best New Artist, Best Latin, and Song Of Summer — at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards, where he performed “Lady Gaga.” He didn’t win any of them, but he has much more serious matters to worry about.

As reported by The Arizona Republic and translated by USA Today, Pluma was threatened by Mexico’s Jalisco New Generation Cartel, as evidenced by a banner spotted in Tijuana earlier in the day. According to the publications, the banner read, “This goes to Peso Pluma, refrain from presenting yourself on October 14 because it will be your last show due to your disrespect and loose tongue, you show up and we are going to [break you].”

Subsequently, Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee, Wisconsin postponed Pluma’s concert scheduled for Thursday, September 14, “due to unforeseen circumstances.”

Pluma has not publicly addressed the scary situation, instead posting shots from his 2023 MTV VMAs debut on Wednesday, September 13. According to his official website, his next scheduled concert is set for September 28 at Reno Events Center in Reno, Nevada.

As per Billboard, The 24-year-old Pluma (real name Hassan Emilio Kabande Laija) was born near Guadalajara, Mexico but spent his adolescence in San Antonio, Texas and New York, New York. According to Hypebeast, Pluma’s stage name, which translates to “featherweight,” was inspired by “the legendary Mexican boxer Marco Antonio Barrera” because of his lean stature. His July album, Genesis, debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 and has spent 11 weeks on the chart so far. To date, Pluma has 21 entries on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, including “Ella Baila Sola” (No. 4 peak).

“It’s a very beautiful song that was written by my friend Pedro Tovar,” Pluma told Uproxx in an interview published around the release of Genesis, speaking of his highest-charting Hot 100 single. “He has his group Eslabon Armado. He invited me to a part of their album Desvelado on that song. Thanks to God it was the song that performed the best on the album. It’s the song that’s racked up all these numbers. I’m very grateful and happy that they had me be a part of this and that everyone has liked it. Now there are remixes of it in all genres. I’m very proud to be Mexican and to raise the Mexican flag high up.”

Pluma added, “I’m very shocked to see how música Mexicana and corridos have reached such a level that people who didn’t like them at all are now the same people who are asking for corridos in the nightclubs. They’re the same people who are asking for this music everywhere. We’re very grateful that this has become something that’s global.”

Billboard additionally relayed that Pluma’s Genesis earned 101.8 million streams during the charting week of July 8, giving him “the largest streaming week ever for a regional Mexican album” up to that point. In doing so, Pluma had 25 songs simultaneously slotted on the Hot Latin Songs chart, besting global giant Bad Bunny‘s 24 — the record since May 2022.

Peso Pluma Received A Stern Warning From Mexico’s CJNG Cartel To Not Come To Tijuana

Peso Pluma had a big night at the 2023 MTV VMAs yesterday (September 12). He didn’t win any awards, but he was nominated for three (Best New Artist, Best Latin, and Song Of The Summer) and he performed during the broadcast. The day overall wasn’t perfect, though: Before the show, he received a threat from a Mexican cartel.

As USA Today reports, a banner threatening the Mexican singer, real name Hassan Emilio Kabande Laija, was displayed on a bridge in Tijuana yesterday. It made note of his scheduled October 14 concert at Caliente Stadium in Tijuana, saying (translated to English), “This goes to Peso Pluma, refrain from presenting yourself on October 14 because it will be your last show due to your disrespect and loose tongue, you show up and we are going to (break you).”

The banner was signed by Jalisco New Generation Cartel, which in 2020 was dubbed by The Wall Street Journal as “Mexico’s top security threat.” The organization is headed by Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, who Reuters in 2022 called “one of Mexico’s most wanted drug runners.”

Pluma hasn’t publicly addressed this yet, but USA Today notes that a number of his upcoming concerts have been canceled. His next show is currently set for September 28 in Reno, Nevada.
