Comments made after the Lakers’ Western Conference Finals exit led many to believe that LeBron was at least considering retirement. “I don’t care how many more points I score or what I can or cannot do on the floor,” James said. “The real question for me is: Can I play without cheating this game? The day I can’t give everything on the floor is the day I’ll be done. Lucky for you guys, that day is not today.”

SOURCE SPORTS: NBA Board of Governors Approve Flopping Penalty and Coach’s Challenge Changes

The NBA Board of Governors has approved significant rule changes for the upcoming 2023-24 NBA season, including the implementation of an in-game flopping penalty and an expansion of the Coach’s Challenge.

The new in-game flopping penalty aims to discourage players from performing deceptive acts to draw fouls. When a game official identifies a flop, the player responsible will be charged with a non-unsportsmanlike technical foul. The opposing team will be awarded one free throw attempt, which can be taken by any player on the court at the time. Importantly, a player will not be ejected for flopping violations.

Referees can stop live play to call a flopping violation, but they may also choose to wait for the next neutral opportunity to administer the penalty. A Coach’s Challenge cannot directly challenge a flopping violation, but it can be called via replay review triggered by a Challenge or referee-initiated review.

Additionally, the Coach’s Challenge has been expanded to grant teams a second Challenge if their initial challenge is successful. However, teams must still possess a timeout to initiate a Challenge.

The in-game flopping penalty and the expanded Coach’s Challenge received unanimous approval from the NBA’s Competition Committee, consisting of players, coaches, team executives, and referees. These rule changes aim to enhance fairness and promote integrity within the game.

The Spurs have shut down Victor Wembanyama after two games at the NBA Summer League. The #1 overall pick struggled offensively in his debut, scoring just nine points. However, he still had a strong showing elsewhere on the court with eight rebounds (all defensive) and five blocks. He bounced back in his second game, earning a double-double with 27 points and 12 rebounds. However, it was later reported that Wembanyama would be kept off the court for the rest of the Summer League. In an interview, Wembanyama said that the rest of the offseason would be “100% basketball” as he prepares for the start of his rookie season.

However, many questions remain about whether Wembanyama can live up to the hype, especially when he takes on the NBA proper. One of the biggest questions concerns his physicality. Wembanyama is officially measured at 7″4 and 209 lbs. Especially during his debut, it was clear that Wembanyama struggled to contend with heavier, more physical players. That has led a number of pundits to suggest that if Wenbanyama wants to succeed in the NBA, he’s going to need to add some weight. However, it’s not an avenue shared by Wembanyama’s camp.

Speaking to ESPN‘s Marc J. Spears, Bouna Ndiaye dismissed claims that Wenbayama’s weight could be an issue. “People are wrong. We’re not focused at all on weights. I don’t want to put weight on his body. We’re going to fight to not put weight on his body. Weight on his body [is] a big mistake. We focus on strength, core. We were very pleased that he linked up [with Kareem Abdul-] Jabbar who played until [41] years old. I’m very glad they, they connected because [they] have a similar body type. Kareem was not heavy. Victor is more mobile, gaudier, and taller than Kareem. So, that difference in height is a challenge and is something that we are working on every day. Making him heavy? We don’t want to do that.”

Kareem but with even more defense is a very fitting comparison. Wembanyama, with his wholly unique skillset, has the opportunity to redefine the league. Maybe he’s not going to match Kareem’s rookie ppg of 28.8 but Wembanyama will almost certainly supplement any scoring deficit with defensive prowess. Wenbanyama could become just the third player to win Rookie of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year in their career. However, Kareem still played at 225 lbs, 14 lbs heavier than Wembanyama’s listed weight.

Commissioner Adam Silver has finally officially announced the long-anticipated in-season tournament for the NBA. He revealed the full plans during NBA2K24 Summer League on Saturday afternoon. The plan change will introduce an “NBA Cup” that will mirror similar European sports.

“This is a concept that has been rumbling around the league office for around 15 years,” Silver said on an episode of NBA Today from “NBA Con” as noted by ESPN. “We thought what a perfect opportunity for a global league like the NBA, and it’s a perfect fit for our game. New traditions take time. But, all throughout sports, we are seeing new innovations, and now is the time for this NBA in-season tournament.”

Portland Trail Blazers Reveal Desired Package For Damian Lillard Trade

Damian Lillard formally requested a trade on July 2, citing the Miami Heat as his preferred destination. However, with Lillard not holding a no-trade clause, the Blazers have been steadfast in seeking the best deal for the team. This has been a problem for the Heat, who haven’t been wowing the Blazers with their Tyler Herro-centric offers. Meanwhile, Lillard’s agent has reportedly been contacting prospective Lillard suitors and telling them to back off. Reportedly, Aaron Gordon has told teams that they would get an “unhappy” version of Lillard if he was sent to a team other than the Heat.

This has led to something of a stalemate. The Blazers are demanding “best offers” only from prospective trade partners will Gordon is trying to force a move to Miami. However, returning to Miami, the Blazers have essentially gone on record to say that either the Heat up their offer or find a third team to add to the trade if Herro is a dealbreaker asset. This has led to the Pistons and Nets joining the trade talks. However, things have gotten a little clearer as the Blazers have revealed what sort of compensation they are looking for.

Blazers Want Multiple Firsts, Multiple Players

According to Aaron Fentress of Oregon Live, “The Blazers, according to NBA sources, are seeking in the neighborhood of four first-round picks and two quality players.” This sounds like an equitable package for what they would be giving up in Lillard. However, 1) it’s bad news for the Heat and 2) it almost guarantees that this will be a three-team deal.

So firstly, why is it bad news for the Heat? Simple – the Heat really don’t have the roster to give up multiple players. This is especially the case if the Blazers don’t have any interest in Tyler Herro. Maybe there would be interest in Kyle Lowry. However, Miami would likely want to keep him. Furthermore, why would Portland trade for a point guard when they have Scoot Henderson? That ties into the second point as well. There are few teams in the league who would be willing to give up two players in order for someone else to get Damian Lillard. It’s almost impossible to put together a trade that feels like would be accepted by all parties.

Portland gets: Kyle Lowry, Mikal Bridges, 2024 1st (MIA), 2026 1st (MIA), 2027 1st (PHX), 2029 1st (DAL)

However, Howard isn’t technically retired. Starting in 2022, Howard has been playing in the Taiwanese League. At the end of his first season, he had captured an all-star nod and Most Valuable Import. He also earned first-team honors for both the league as a whole and all-defense. However, Howard is now making some bold claims about Nikola Jokić.

Howard went off while speaking to Complex. “Obviously, people going to say Jokić can score. He got all those offensive skills. But at the same time, I was getting 38 and 20, 45-18, 19, 20, and I’m doing all this with twos. No threes, all twos. I’m doing this with lobs. I’m not getting a lot of post-up attempts like Jokic. He’s getting way more opportunities I would say. And I was just in a different era. So, people look at that and say, “Well, Jokić, he scores and does all this stuff.” And no offense, I think he’s great. I love Jokić, I don’t want people to think that I’m trying to hate even comparing, but I’m going to take myself. I know how dominant I was and I know what I could do with my skills.
