Stacey Abrams Slams Georgia Governor Brian Kemp Over Music Midtown’s Cancelation

Earlier this week, it was reported that Atlanta’s Music Midtown Festival, which was scheduled for September 17-18 and headlined by Fall Out Boy, Future, Jack White, and My Chemical Romance, was canceled due to a conflict between organizers’ safety standards and Georgia’s Safe Carry Protection Act. Basically, because the state law allows citizens to carry firearms on public land and the festival’s venue, Piedmont Park, is a state park, organizers were not able to ban guns on festival grounds. Clearly, this was a pretty untenable situation, and rather than break the law, the organizers canceled the event.

This move was guaranteed to disappoint and anger plenty of Atlanta residents and Democratic gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams has seized the opportunity to reproach her incumbent opponent Brian Kemp for the results of his “shameful” policies. In a statement, she said:

Brian Kemp’s dangerous and extreme gun agenda endangers the lives of Georgians, and the cancellation of Music Midtown is proof that his reckless policies endanger Georgia’s economy as well. It’s shameful, but not surprising, that the governor cares more about protecting dangerous people carrying guns in public than saving jobs and businesses in Georgia. In dire economic times for so many Georgians, this cancellation will cost Georgia’s economy a proven $50 million. This means that small businesses and workers who rely on events like Music Midtown and their tremendous economic impact have now lost incomes that help put food on the table and a roof over their heads.

Atlanta’s Music Midtown Festival Was Reportedly Canceled Because The Venue Can’t Legally Ban Guns

There is no place for guns at music festivals. It seems obvious, right? Now imagine a world where going to a music festival comes with the uncertainty of whether or not one of your fellow attendees has a gun. This is what a number of Georgia gun rights groups are arguing for and is reportedly the main issue that Atlanta’s Music Midtown Festival organizers were faced with when making the decision to cancel the 2022 edition of the festival.

Slated to take place from September 17th – 18th, Music Midtown had a jam-packed lineup ready to rock that featured Jack White, Future, My Chemical Romance, Phoebe Bridgers, Phoenix, and Fallout Boy among the artists across the two-day festival. But now as Billboard reports, pressure from gun rights groups operating under the guise of Georgia’s Safe Carry Protection Act — which allows citizens to carry weapons on public land, which Piedmont Park is on — has crushed any hopes for a weekend of music, community, and celebration.

“Hey Midtown fans – due to circumstances beyond our control, Music Midtown will no longer be taking place this year,” a statement on the festival’s website reads. “We were looking forward to reuniting in September and hope we can all get back to enjoying the festival together again soon.”

While the details of the Safe Carry Protection Act don’t necessarily require the festival to allow guns into the festival, it does leave them open to being sued by gun-carrying ticket-holders who claim that their legal rights are being violated. It’s hard to imagine any scenario where an attendee would need a gun at a music festival. Given that earlier this year, reported gunshots at Lovers & Friends festival in Las Vegas led to a frenzied attempt to flee by attendees who feared for their lives, and that back in 2017, a shooter opened fire on a crowd at the Route 91 Harvest country music festival in Vegas, killing 50 people, the optics of this push by gun rights groups feels especially cruel.

My Chemical Romance, Future, And Jack White Are Headlining The 2022 Music Midtown Festival

Two weeks after Shaky Knees Festival took center stage in Downtown Atlanta, the city’s other major festival, Music Midtown Festival, has ceased the limelight with yet another thoroughly stacked lineup. Going down from September 17th to 18th in Atlanta’s sprawling Piedmont Park (which you guessed it, is in Midtown), Music Midtown’s headliners include the reunited My Chemical Romance, native son rapper Future, rock and roll stud Jack White, and pop-punk mainstays Fall Out Boy.

Over 30 acts will descend upon four stages at the park for the two-day festival, which still features a giant Ferris wheel that you can hop on and take in the views. The diversity-minded festival bill will feature appearances from indie rock stars in Phoebe Bridgers, Mitski, and Phoenix; rappers 2 Chainz and Denzel Curry; and pop crossover acts like Quinn XCII, Louis The Child, and Conan Gray. Also performing over the weekend are Turnstile, A Day To Remember, 100 Gecs, Alex Benjamin, Keshi, Marc Rebillet, Key Glock, Tinashe, Hippo Campus, Ashe, and more.
