Lil Wayne Performs At Essence Festival But Not At Birdman, Cash Money & Hot Boys Reunion

Fans got a Birdman, Cash Money, and Hot Boys reunion at the Essence Festival in New Orleans on Friday (July 5), but not the one they might’ve hoped for. Moreover, Lil Wayne didn’t perform with his former label mates, instead doing a solo show after their set after he replaced the Cash Money logos with his Young Money insignias. He performed for about 20 minutes starting at around 1:30AM local time, wasn’t backstage with the group, and the fact that some artists that technically aren’t Cash Money Records roster members performed suggest that there are still issues to work out in the camp. Maybe they’re logistical, and perhaps they’re more beef-driven.

Furthermore, these guests at the Cash Money reunion included former New Orleans mayor Marc Morial, who presented a National Urban League proclamation to a Cash delegation with Birdman’s brother and record label co-boss Ronald Williams. He and Slim got their flowers recently with a street naming ceremony in their city. Regardless, performers included a live band, Juvenile, Mannie Fresh, Stunna himself, B.G., The LOX, Bun B, Scarface, and 2 Chainz. Turk, one of four Hot Boys member and the only one we haven’t mentioned so far, hinted that “business” issues prevented his appearance, and it’s unclear whether this has anything to do with inner tension.

Birdman Speaks At Essence Festival & Some Fans Unfoundedly Think He’s Talking About Lil Wayne

“My name is Tunechi,” Lil Wayne remarked as his show began with “Uproar” after all the other artists went off stage. “I’m here on behalf of Young Money f***ing Records,” he added, notably replacing his former Cash Money imprint with his now independent offshoot. In fact, some Young Money members joined him to perform “Every Girl,” and he went offstage before Birdman, Mannie Fresh, and B.G. returned for the Big Tymers’ “Still Fly.” Looks like Weezy is still outside the loop when it comes to this reunion, or perhaps he chose to stay out of it.

“Every day I did this s**t it was painful for me, because I lost Ms. Gladys as a youngster and I never recovered from that,” Birdman said of his late mother during the performance. “I was just trying to bless some young n***as who was headed in the direction I was headed. I swear to God on everything I love, and I love nothing more than Ms. Gladys, I would never let my city down and be a p***y a** n***a for nobody.”

Birdman Believes A Drake, Nicki Minaj & Lil Wayne Show Would Net Them $20 Million

Birdman’s very proud of all of his alumni of Cash Money and Young Money, but when those label names come up, there’s a particular trio that immediately comes to mind. Moreover, the rapper and executive recently reflected on how much Drake, Nicki Minaj, and Lil Wayne could make if they did a show together. After all, it’s been a long time (almost a year, and almost a decade before that) since they shared the stage for a performance. Considering the legendary status that they all reached in the game, people would pay a lot of money to see such spectacle. Baby knows this, and told The 85 South Comedy Show podcast just how much a potential show could net the iconic trifecta.

“So you know with Nicki and Drake, that s**t about $15-20million a show,” Birdman stated. “Big facts. A lot of [money on the table]. $4-5million a show. We’ve been offered about $4-5million a show. That’s without Drake and Nicki.” Of course, it’s unsurprising that Lil Wayne alone would be worth so much for a concert. However, his remarks open up the possibility that a Young Money reunion show (or tour, hopefully) would be a massive moment for the culture.

Birdman Speaks On Money-Making Potential Of Drake, Nicki Minaj & Lil Wayne Show

Still, we do have to recognize that Young Money is no longer what it was, with each artist going on to shape their own careers. Sure, Weezy still commits to his label artists and Nicki Minaj remains on Young Money, but Drake moved onto OVO and Republic, which Nicki also partnered with. Regardless, Drizzy’s still loyal to Birdman, Cash Money, and Young Money. “I’m always going to be involved in the Cash Money/Young Money imprint,” he told Rap Radar in 2019. “And my loyalty, like I said, always lies there.”

Meanwhile, the last time the three performed together was at the 6 God’s October World Weekend festival in August of 2022. It was the first time they did so in nearly ten years, and it made for an electrifying moment. With Pink Friday 2, For All The Dogs, and Tha Carter VI on the way, hopefully they can reunite on wax, too. If not, they have that $20 million show to wager on. Lil Wayne Sounded Too Much Like Jay-Z, Birdman Allegedly Thought

The greatest artists in the world can be as inspired by their favorite artists as the rest of us mortals, especially early into their careers. While things have changed a lot for him since then, that was once the case for Lil Wayne– or, at least, Birdman thought so. Moreover, Weezy recently revealed to Rolling Stone that Stunna once chastised him for sounding too much like Jay-Z, a weird comparison with today’s context in mind. Still, as two of the greatest rappers still walking across the planet today, maybe it shouldn’t be so surprising. Furthermore, the New Orleans legend told the publication the story when asked whether he listens to any hip-hop these days.

“When it comes to rap, I don’t listen to no one,” Lil Wayne revealed. “I just don’t have time to, because I’m trying to get better every day. I tell my own artist that, too. When you find a favorite artist, you’re going to start sounding like them. It took Birdman and them to pull my a** aside and be like, ‘Bro, I’m tired of every song you doing sounding like damn Jay-Z. You’re not Jay-Z.’”

Then, the interviewer asked Tunechi how that made him feel in the moment. “Yeah, I was glad it was working,” he responded with a laugh. “That’s like, ‘Oh, good, it’s working.’” And it worked all the way to one of the most legendary, acclaimed, and commercially successful careers in the genre. Elsewhere during their conversation, Lil Wayne shared a lot of gems, interesting takes, and surprising revelations. For example, he explained not really being able to tell Tha Carters apart.

“I’m going to be so honest with you: I don’t know Tha Carter IIITha Carter IITha Carter One from Tha Carter IV. And that’s just my God’s honest truth. You could lie, you could ask me [about] such and such song, I wouldn’t even know what we talking about. So it holds no significance to me at all. I don’t even know if [2008 is] when Tha Carter III came out. That’s how much I don’t know, I work every day, bro- every single day. I always look at it as the curse part of the gift and the curse. I believe that [God] blessed me with this amazing mind, but would not give [me] an amazing memory to remember this amazing s**t.” For the latest news and updates on Lil Wayne, come back to HNHH.
