Jay Williams Calls For NCAA Tournament Expansion

College basketball fans are currently in the middle of their favorite time of year. The NCAA tournament is a time for fans, new and old, to watch powerhouse programs lose to small schools. While everyone just to pick the perfect bracket and have bragging rights over their friends. Many believe that the college basketball postseason tournament is as perfect as a sporting event can be. However, ESPN broadcaster Jay Williams believes the tournament could use a tweak.

On Monday’s episode of First Take, Williams took a moment to discuss expanding a tournament that already fields 68 teams. Williams stated that the tournament should involve 112 teams. Which didn’t go over well to co-hosts Shannon Sharpe and Seth Greenberg. The debate for expanding the NCAA Tournament has heated up in recent years. Although most believe it is perfect as is. Jay Williams Tournament Expansion Idea Falls On Deaf Ears

Williams is of the belief that everyone should get in. Even though part of the magic of the tournament is that only some are allowed in. The former Duke Blue Devils star states that nobody is watching the beginning of the tournament anyway, so let everyone in. Which that statement couldn’t be further from the truth. As Seth Greenberg made a great point that, sports gambling has more eyes on the product than probably ever before.

The talk of expanding the NCAA Tournament is only just beginning. There’s too much money for these programs not to entertain the idea of expanding the tournament. The Dallas Mavericks have been a hot-button issue this week, and for good reason. A team that is as talented as them shouldn’t be on the cusp of missing the playoffs. The Mavericks are currently the eleventh seed in the West, which would have them just missing the playoffs. Given the moves they’ve made, missing the playoffs would be an all-systems failure for the organization. On ESPN’s First Take, Jay Williams offered insight into the failing Mavericks. Williams doesn’t think that Doncic and Irving should take all the blame. Jay believes the head coach could be to blame.

Jason Kidd is the head coach of the Dallas Mavericks. Kidd is in his second year as head coach of the Mavericks and may start feeling the pressure. In his first season in Dallas, Kidd went 52-30. A massive upgrade from the team’s current 37-40 record. When the ship begins sinking like this, finger-pointing ultimately begins. At the same time, it’s not just one person’s fault. Jay Williams’ insight on how Kidd uses his stars could be an issue with the failing team.

Williams didn’t hold back on his feelings about Kidd’s performance as head coach. “There is a major concern that I have about Jason Kidd as a coach holding [Kyrie and Luka] accountable. In the last eight minutes of the game, Kyrie Irving and Luka Dončić … took a combined five shots. … Last night was unacceptable,” Williams stated. When breaking down the stats, it is strange to see the team not capitalize on the backcourt duo. Someone has to draw up the plays for Luka and Kyrie. That falls on Kidd.

Jay Williams Hits Charles Barkley Where It Hurts

Jay Williams has been fantastic on ESPN as of late. Overall, he has proven himself as someone who is very pro-player. Moreover, he has no qualms about getting into it with guys like Stephen A. Smith. If he doesn’t like a take from someone, he is going to let them know about it, without any exceptions. At this point, Williams is valued by the company, and it has led to appearances on many of the top shows. This includes First Take where he sat across from JJ Redick today.

One of the many topics of conversation involved the current feud between Charles Barkley and Kevin Durant. Recently, Barkley stated that the current generation is too sensitive. Consequently, Durant came out and told Barkley to stop mentioning him. He also said that he will never respect what Barkley has to say as it just doesn’t matter all that much to him. It was a very interesting back-and-forth, and Jay Williams certainly had a unique perspective on it all.

As you can see in the clip above, Williams told Redick that there is one simple argument that can be made which derails what Barkley is saying. Michael Jordan used to be best friends with Barkley. However, he stopped talking to Chuck over some mild criticism. MJ is considered one of the toughest players in NBA history, yet was extremely sensitive to being told that he was doing a bad job. Simply put, you cannot boil down sensitivity to today’s generation. Everyone is guilty of it, one way or another.

Overall, this was a very solid point by Jay Williams. JJ Redick ultimately backed it up by saying that NBA players are some of the most sensitive in the entire world. Had Stephen A. Smith been there, it would have definitely been an interesting conversation. After all, Stephen A. likes to take up for and defend the older generation. When it comes to the likes of Kyrie Irving, Stephen A. has been very critical over the years. Overall, Smith believes that Kyrie is one of the most talented players in the league. However, Smith also believes that Irving has wasted his talent by doing some boneheaded things. Whenever Kyrie messes up, Smith is one of the first people to criticize him. Although that is Smith’s job, some fans have found it bizarre that Stephen A. seemingly goes after Kyrie harder than any other athlete in the sports world.

Recently, Kyrie has been a huge topic of conversation for Smith on First Take. Of course, this is because Kyrie demanded a trade from the Brooklyn Nets. Subsequently, the Nets were able to get rid of Kyrie as they sent him to the Dallas Mavericks. Now, Kyrie will get to play alongside Luka Doncic, and fans are curious as to how it will pan out. As for Stephen A., he got to talk about Kyrie on First Take this morning. However, it turned out to be a heated endeavor for Smith as he faced off against fellow analyst and former NBA star, Jay Williams.

As you can see from the clip above, it appears as though Williams doesn’t have much love for Smith. He accused Stephen A. of going harder on Kyrie than he does any other athlete. Moreover, he felt as though Smith’s criticisms are hypocritical at times. Smith was not having any of this and got heated, telling Williams that he wasn’t saying anything of interest. This led to a highly-contentious back and forth in which Williams called Stephen A. “triggered.” Overall, it felt very personal, and even Molly Qerim noted it as such. Needless to say, Williams may not be coming back to the show, anytime soon.

Kyrie is someone who always seems to invite these kinds of hot takes. Smith is certainly not the first person to criticize Irving, and he will not be the last.
