Santigold Announces Her New Album, ‘Spirituals,’ And Drops A New Video For ‘Ain’t Ready’

Santigold will return this fall with her new album, Spirituals. The project will arrive via her label, Little Jerk, and feature collaborators like Rostam, Boys Noize, Dre Skull, P2J, Nick Zinner, SBTRKT, JakeOne, Illangelo, Doc McKinney, Psymun, Ricky Blaze, Lido, Ray Brady, and Ryan Olson.

“Recording this album was a way back to myself after being stuck in survival mode. It wasn’t until I made the space to create that I realized I wasn’t only creating music but a lifeline,” said Santigold in a statement. “California was on fire, we were hiding from a plague, the social justice protests were unfolding. I’d never written lyrics faster in my life. After having total writer’s block, they started pouring out. I decided to create the future, to look towards where we are going, to create beauty and pull towards that beauty. I need that for myself, but it’s also there for whoever else needs it.”

Her latest single, “Ain’t Ready” is a collaboration with producers Illangelo, Dre Skull, and SBTRKT. The song’s music video, directed by Frank Ockenfels, sees Santi in an interrogation room, interrogating herself.

Speaking on the song’s creation, Santigold said, “It was one of those songs where as soon as I opened my mouth the whole melody just poured out. There were no words but all the emotion was there. To me, the song sounded full of struggle and perseverance. It sounded like a battle, and I wanted the production to sound tough, to mirror that grit. I struggled to find the right lyrics at first, but when I got them right, and I started singing them one night in my studio alone, I cried. This song was my own battle song. It’s about taking the hits that life brings and getting back up. It’s about change and moving forward. It’s about faith and vision. And it’s about stepping into your own power.”

Snoop Dogg Will Be The First Guest On Martha Stewart’s New Podcast

Snoop Dogg and Martha Stewart’s friendship isn’t one that many people originally expected, but it’s one that has lasted quite a while. The two have paired up for television appearances on several occasions including their 2016 VH1 series Martha & Snoop’s Potluck Dinner Party which featured games, recipes, and musical guests. Three years later it spawned a spinoff, Martha & Snoop’s Potluck Party Challenge. Snoop and Martha have also starred in a T-Mobile commercial for Super Bowl LI and they co-hosted The Puppy Bowl XVII earlier this year. Now, the duo will bring their talents to the podcast world.

Martha Stewart will launch her new podcast, appropriately titled The Martha Stewart Podcast, later this month. She recently released a brief introduction clip of the iHeartRadio Original Podcast where she revealed that Snoop will be her first guest for the show. “Every time I go anywhere all they want to know is ‘How’s Snoop?’” Stewart says in the clip. Snoop replies, “You don’t think I get approached all the time by people that say ‘Do you think you can get me a picture of Martha; do you think you can get an autograph?’”

According to Billboard, future guests on The Martha Stewart Podcast include Kris Jenner, Alex Rodriguez, “plant explorer” Dan Hinkley, and Stewart’s friends and creative collaborators Kevin Sharkey and Douglas Friedman.

Nas Unveils A New Trailer For His Showtime Docuseries, ‘Supreme Team’

Showtime has revealed the trailer for the upcoming docuseries, Supreme Team. Supreme Team, directed by rapper Nas and Peter J. Scalettar for Mass Appeal tells the story of the namesake crime syndicate from Queens, New York.

The three-episode docuseries features interviews with the gang’s founding members Kenneth “Supreme” McGriff and Gerald “Prince” Miller. LL Cool J, New York City Mayor Eric Adams, journalist Joy Reid, singer Ashanti, producer Irv Gotti, and others in the local community, politics, law enforcement, academia, and popular culture will also offer anecdotes and statements throughout the docuseries.

According to a release, viewers will see Prince and Supreme recall “youthful decisions they made in the 1970s that would so greatly impact each of them later in life. What followed was a tightrope walk as these two men navigated choices that could land them as leaders of their industry, or behind bars for life – all the while getting sucked into the chaos in their community which has an impact that is still felt to this day.”

Supreme Team will have its official premiere at Tribeca Festival in New York City this Sunday, June 19 before its official premiere on Showtime on Friday, July 8.

Nipsey Hussle’s Killer Denies That The Rapper’s Murder Was ‘Premeditated And Deliberate’

This past March marked three years since Nipsey Hussle was tragically killed outside of his Marathon store on Crenshaw and Slauson. Eric Holder, the man accused of killing Nipsey, was arrested two days after the shooting and charged with one count of murder, two counts of attempted murder, two counts of assault with a deadly weapon, and one count of felony possession of a firearm. Holder pled not guilty to all of the aforementioned charges as he continued to await trial, but that wait proved to be longer than expected as the trial’s start date was repeatedly delayed.

Finally, things got underway today and during the opening statements, the prosecution, led by Deputy District Attorney John McKinney, alleged that Holder’s shooting of Nipsey was “premeditated and deliberate.” “You’re going to hear and see evidence that he had plenty of opportunity to think about what he was going to do before he did it,” McKinney said according to Rolling Stone. “From the time he got out of the car and all the way back to that strip mall and walked up to those gentlemen and started shooting and shooting and shooting.”

Holder’s lawyer Aaron Jansen denies the claim that the shooting was premeditated and deliberate. However, McKinney looked to prove that this was false as he played a black-and-white video of the shooting in court on Wednesday. It showed Nipsey and Holder’s initial interactions, Holder leaving and then returning to fire gunshots at Nipsey and two others.

“You’ll see him retreat back after a few shots, and then he goes back and he shoots some more, and he retreats back, and then he goes back, and he shoots even more,” McKinney told the jury.

Opening statements were delivered hours after a full jury and six alternate jurors were selected for the trial.

Fans Think Normani Is Dating A Seattle Seahawks Player After What Looked Like A Romantic Dinner

Pop star Normani has been slowly rolling out the release of her debut solo album over the past few months, sharing the single “Fair” and teasing a new one, ostensibly titled “Candy Paint.” And while fans have been patient in holding out for confirmation of a release date so far, they now have an entirely different kind of “date” to distract them from the wait. The “Wild Side” singer was recently seen leaving a trendy Los Angeles restaurant with a new potential boo, and fans are having a field speculating about the possibility of romance.

Normani arrived at the restaurant, Giorgio Baldi in Santa Monica, solo, but left with Seattle Seahawks wide receiver DK Metcalf in the same car, according to sources including Hollywood Life and Billboard. Once fans got their first glimpse of the photos they couldn’t help but gush over the possible couple. And while there are certainly some who disapprove, there are others who were quick to defend her.

Look, we’re not here to question who’s out of whose league. But both seem to be doing just fine in their respective fields. Metcalf is apparently so fast on the field, in fact, that he’s reportedly looking forward to try to qualify for the Olympics despite a diet consisting of what sounds like mainly sugary sweets. Meanwhile, both clearly have the downtime to enjoy together — while DK is rehabbing from an injury, Normani is just waiting for a release date for her album. If they’re enjoying killing time together, good for them.

Lil Wayne Has Been Denied Entry Into The UK For A Festival Performance Due To His Past Criminal Record

Lil Wayne had one of the greatest runs Hip-Hop has ever seen that was unfortunately derailed by label issues and legal troubles. Fortunately for Weezy and his fans, he has found a way to rise above and achieve multiple career revivals when it comes to the music. Yet, once again, Lil Wayne’s past has caught up to him as the New Orleans rapper is being denied entry into the UK days before he is set to hit the Strawberries & Creem stage on June 18. This set would have been Wayne’s first performance in the Uk in 14 years.

The rapper, now replaced by Ludacris, was apparently denied entry by the Home Office in a “last-minute decision” according to event organizers. “We are deeply disappointed by this sudden and negative ruling,” Strawberries & Creem organizers wrote in a statement. “We have received very minimal notice, and the timing of the decision is of course upsetting for all involved.”

The Home Office elaborated on their ruling in a statement to Rolling Stone: “In a statement to Rolling Stone, a Home Office spokesperson said, “Any individual who has been sentenced to a custodial sentence of 12 months or more must have their application refused.” The statement is referring to Lil Wayne’s 12-month prison sentence for weapons charges stemming from his arrest in July 2007. Though Wayne was sentenced to a year, he was released after eight months due to good behavior.

The Family Of The Man Suge Knight Killed With His Truck Is Suing Him For $81 Million

Suge Knight hasn’t been the CEO of Death Row Records for a long time now. He’s currently serving a 28-year sentence for a 2015 hit-and-run in which he clipped Straight Outta Compton consultant Che “Bone” Sloan with his truck after a fight and ran over and killed Compton businessman Terry Carter. However, his reduced stature in the music business hasn’t stopped Carter’s family’s attorney from demanding $81 million in a wrongful death suit filed against Knight.

According to Rolling Stone, Lance Behringer, the lawyer pursuing the case for Knight’s family, said in court Tuesday that Knight owes Carter’s widow and daughters at least $1 million apiece for each year Carter could have been expected to live had he not been killed by Knight (three times 27 is how you get 81). Behringer is quoted saying, “Dying on the concrete floor alone at Tam’s Burgers was not a natural death. He was taken from these three women. Nobody’s comfortable talking about money, But that’s what we have to do.”

Knight pled no contest to voluntary manslaughter to avoid trial back in 2018, and to avoid having a guilty verdict used in the then-impending civil trial. Since his own plea could not be used as evidence, the trial had to rely on the evidence that would have been used during the criminal trial had it proceeded, which included security video taken from the Tam’s Burgers restaurant where the incident occurred. At the time, Suge maintained that he believed Carter and Sloan were making an attempt on his life after arguing and fighting with Sloan but in the course of explaining himself, he gave what could have been an incriminating answer.

“I was going straight,” he said. “I seen the guy in the front of my truck. I seen the guy in my mirror. I wanted to make sure to get this guy, and I did.” If he’s found liable for Carter’s death, whatever penalty is determined for him to pay the family will be just one he faces; in 2020, he was ordered to pay $107 million to former Death Row employees for pushing them out.

El-P Catches COVID, Forcing Run The Jewels To Withdraw From The Something In The Water Festival

While we have created a new sense of normal in our COVID-19-stricken world, the threat of the virus is still present. In some unfortunate news, Twitter users learned that Run The Jewels will no longer be able to perform at Something In The Water this weekend because El-P tested positive. He sent out a public notes app apology coupled with the humorous caption, “looks like i picked the wrong month to stop sniffing glue” (a reference to the 1980 movie Airplane!).

Something In The Water is a three-day festival founded in 2019, and this is the first year it is going to be held in Washington DC. The lineup includes names like Tyler The Creator, Lil Baby, Lucky Daye, Usher, Ashanti and Ja Rule, J Balvin, Pharrell, Clipse, Justin Timberlake, SZA, NORE, and many more.

With it being nearly a full year since Run The Jewels released RTJ4 (Deluxe Edition), fans will now have to a little longer for a big festival set from the group. There are over four decades of history between El-P and Killer Mike both as individuals and together, yet they are still in high demand evident in the many well wishes shared with El-P.

Saucy Santana Refuses To Apologize For Old Tweets Dissing Beyonce And Blue Ivy

Twitter continues to be both a gift and a curse for up-and-coming artists, as Saucy Santana is now learning due to some of his outrageous early online behavior. After appearing on XXL‘s 2022 Freshman Class feature this week, signaling his impending superstardom, he apparently came under fire from the Beyhive, the aggressive self-declared defenders of Beyonce’s online dignity. Their stinging tweets prompted him to address his “childish, hateful tweets” while encouraging the Stans to do some self-reflection and growing up themselves.

“Fake woke ass bitches!!!!” he wrote. “People don’t care about old tweets. The internet have this weird thing with power! Thinking they have the power to cancel someone… NEWS FLASH! You don’t! Y’all be thinking y’all have someone by the balls about situations you don’t give a damn about.” The old tweets in question saw the outspoken then-makeup artist opining that he thought he was “prettier than” Beyonce and calling then-toddler Blue Ivy “nappy headed.” They likely rankled fans in light of Santana’s new song “Booty” heavily sampling Beyonce’s breakthrough solo single “Crazy In Love.”

In a follow-up thread, he explained why he tweeted such things and highlighted some of the changes he’s made since then. “Stop all that cap! Tryna ruin ppl Careers cuz you at home miserable and broke. I was miserable and broke too making childish, hateful tweets in 2014. Im 28 years old. A grown a– adult. A completely different mindset on life from when I was 20. But, yall knew dat. It be the people in the comments… tryna force you to apologize or say sorry. To who?! To y’all?! If I did something to offend someone I should I apologize to them!!!! Not u bitches. Told y’all, y’all think got power over ppl. But, go head.”

He certainly has a point. Everybody — and I do mean “everybody” — seems to be way too invested in other peoples’ lives online and while it may seem like the folks we target for fun are distanced from the fallout, having hundreds or even thousands of people tweeting such horrible things at you would eventually get to anybody. If anything, perhaps the Hive was stressed out because they thought Beyonce was going to announce a new album and didn’t. If that’s the case, then they should really give another listen to her self-titled album and do their best to chill out. Meanwhile, it’s nice that Saucy has learned his lesson; let’s just hope the time comes when apologies for boorish online behavior are no longer needed at all.

The Jury In Nipsey Hussle’s Murder Trial Has Been Selected

The trial against Eric Holder, the man accused of shooting and killing Nipsey Hussle, is about to commence, and the jury has been selected according to Los Angeles’ ABC News affiliate. The jurors were sworn in on Monday, with the six alternate jurors chosen on Tuesday should any of the originals need to be replaced. The jury will hear opening statements today.

The trial has been a long time coming, with multiple delays due to COVID-19, Holder’s own stubbornness, and changes to personnel including the assigned judge and Holder’s defense lawyer. Holder pled not guilty to one count of murder, two counts of attempted murder, two counts of assault with a deadly weapon, and one count of felony possession of a firearm in the case back in 2019.

Holder was accused of murdering the Los Angeles rapper in front of his Marathon Clothing store on the corner of the streets Nipsey avidly affirmed in his music: Crenshaw and Slauson. Prosecutors say that Nipsey and Holder had a disagreement, and Holder returned to the store, firing with two handguns, hitting Nipsey and a pair of bystanders. Nipsey was pronounced dead at the hospital.
