Lil Wayne Speaks Candidly About Mental Health & Past Suicide Attempt

Legendary rapper Lil Wayne opened up about his history of struggling with mental health and even attempting suicide as a child, in a new interview with Emmanuel Acho for his series Uncomfortable Conversations. Wayne says he came into the interview with the explicit goal of helping any of his fans who are struggling with mental health problems.

As for when Wayne first realized he dealt with mental health issues, he answered, “As a kid, around 10, when I was told I couldn’t have what I wanted, what I dreamed of and what I desired, and that was to rap. I was willing to die for it.”

After that, Wayne reflected on a time when he was 12 years old. His mother had found out he was lying about school and he knew he was about to get punished. Before his mother could get home, he got her gun and held it to his chest, and pulled the trigger. While the gun wasn’t loaded, Wayne says he fainted from shock.

The new conversation with Acho isn’t the first time that Wayne has discussed his mental health in public. In 2016, on Solange’s song, “Mad,” he spoke about suicide. “When I attempted suicide, I didn’t die,” he said on the track.

Police Investigating Zumbi’s Death As A Homicide: Report

Police in Berkeley are investigating the death of Zion I rapper Zumbi as a homicide, according to a new report from the San Francisco Chronicle. The legendary Bay Area artist died earlier this week due to unknown causes after reportedly being hospitalized for COVID-19.

Berkeley police Lt. Melanie Turner says police responded to multiple calls at 5:16 a.m. local time, alleging that a patient was involved in a physical altercation with nurses and security officers.

Turner said upon arrival “officers started handcuffing the involved person and determined that he needed immediate medical assistance.”

While staff attempted life-saving measures, Turner says “unfortunately and sadly he was pronounced deceased on the scene.”

Close collaborator of Zumbi’s, DJ True Justice, says that, despite the report, the late rapper “never condoned violence.”

“Steve was not a violent person; he never sought violence; he never condoned violence,” he told the publication. “However, I know as a person, I know Steve is very firm in his beliefs.”

The original statement put out in the wake of his death did not provide a cause of death.

“It is with utter disbelief and great sadness that the Gaines family shares the news of the passing of Steve ‘Zumbi’ Gaines on Friday, August 13, 2021,” the statement read. “Gaines, 49 and the MC of the critically acclaimed Hip Hop group Zion I, passed away at Alta Bates Hospital today in the early morning from unknown causes.”

Fans Slam NFL Over Strict New Taunting Rules On Display In Preseason

Football fans were vocally upset on Twitter, Sunday, after seeing the new NFL taunting rules implemented during the first week of the preseason. A call on Indianapolis Colts running back Benny LeMay, in particular, made the rounds online.

During the 3rd quarter of the Colts matchup with the Carolina Panthers, LeMay broke free on a run that ended with him carrying a pile of defenders for about 10 extra yards. Afterward, he subtly flexed in front of the defenders and a flag was thrown.

“Just awful no one wants this,” one fan wrote. “If you cant flex on em after dragging dudes 10 yards why even play?”

A Colts beat writer wrote: “No Fun League strikes again with a taunting penalty against fourth-string RB Benny LeMay, who had the audacity to be excited about his 14-yard run.”

The increased effort to crack down on taunting, this year, will target “baiting or taunting acts or words” and “abusive, threatening or insulting language or gestures,” according to the NFL’s unsportsmanlike conduct rules.

“The N.F.L. Players Association, coaches and competition committee have all made a strong statement regarding respect among everyone on the field,” the NFL recently said in a statement. “We saw an increase in actions that clearly are not within the spirit and intent of this rule and not representative of the respect to opponents and others on the field.”

Check out responses to the call below.
