As history and Cudi himself tell it, many of us have credited Kanye West with helping Cudi rise to fame. However, Jim Jones claims that the credit is all his.

In a recent interview with VIP Saturdays on Sirius XM, Jim Jones spoke about being the first big-name artist to appear on “Day N Nite.” Jones also spoke about his first meeting with Cudi. “Kid Cudi was nobody,” Jim Jones said. “He worked in a f*cking store under Koch Records. I was signed to Koch Records. I didn’t even know Kid Cudi worked down there.” He added, “Lisa Brunt’s nephew at the time was doing some work for me in my studio, and he’s like, ‘Yo, I manage these video directors, and I want them to shoot a video for you,’ and sh*t like that. I’m like, ‘Show me the video.’ They showed me the video, ended up being a Kid Cudi video that they shot for free for him.”

Jones continued, “They’re like ‘This is the kid that works in the f*cking rock-n-roll store under Koch. They just did it for him,’ and I was like, ‘Give me the record, and I’ll let y’all shoot me a video.’ They got me the record, they shot the video.”

Jones was then asked how the version of him on “Day N Nite” ended up on HOT 97’s radio airwaves and why he was eventually removed from the song.

“I put it on YouTube. Somebody at Hot97 ripped it off of YouTube and started playing it at Hot97. When he got his deal, they took me off the record and went for ads without me on the record. DJ Cassidy did that, you dig. You know I bumped into him, but that’s my man, though. It’s always a joke, though, but it happens like that. I’m solely responsible for Kid Cudi’s career. You can go tell him that, and he’s going to tell you, ‘He’s right.’”

Though Coldplay are fresh off the release of their own new album, Music Of The Spheres, the well-established Brit pop-rock band took a moment to celebrate some music by another artist. In a new set of songs for their Spotify Singles session, the band released an acoustic version of their own new song, “Let Somebody Go” — which features Selena Gomez herself on the studio version — and a cover of a pretty classic Kid Cudi song that’s apparently made an impression on Chris Martin.

“‘Day ‘N’ Nite’ I loved when it came out, and I still love love love it,” Coldplay frontman Chris Martin said in a statement. “This is the first time I think that we’ve really taken proper time to record a cover, because in my head I could hear a version of it quite different from the original, that hopefully just reinforces what a brilliant song it is. One way or another I hope that anyone listening will just think, ‘Wow, Kid Cudi is amazing.’”

Kid Cudi Is Not A Fan Of A New TikTok Trend That Uses Lyrics From ‘Day ‘N’ Nite’

A new music-based trend seem to be born every week on TikTok. The social media app has housed favorites like the Renegade, Buss It, and Silhouette challenges, all of which have been supported by the artists whose songs serve as the their foundations. Kid Cudi is the latest act to have his music trend on TikTok, but when he saw the way his song was being used in the videos, the rapper found it hard to show support.

“I dont f*ck w what they did to my song on tik tok takin out the lyrics,” he wrote in a post on Twitter. “We live in a strange time. Im not flattered (shrugging emoji).” The TikToks Cudi is referring to finds users taking the “now look at this” line from Cudi’s 2008 hit “Day ‘N’ Nite,” which is used for a two-part video. In the first part, users recite the “Day ‘N’ Nite” line as the song plays in background. This leads into the second half, in which something bizarre or hilarious happens. A fan responded to Cudi’s tweet and said, “Cudi is goated, but it just ain’t that deep really,” but the rapper pushed back.

“I dont think im makin it ‘deep’ by tweetin how I feel,” he replied. “Now if I was ranting thats another thing. Nothing wrong w me stating I dont approve, plus if u are such a fan, u know my lyrics are most important to me.” Cudi added, “Im passionate about my sh*t so idc who has a problem w that.”
