ICYMI, and that may have been a good thing, most of the world saw last night’s first 2024 presidential debate. It was a whole moment – not in any good way, shape or form. About 48 million viewers by CNN’s count. Everybody had an opinion. One voice stands out for obvious reasons.
Former President Barack Obama commented on President Joe Biden’s poor debate performance against Donald Trump, drawing from his own experience in 2012.
Here’s what Obama posted on X/Twitter:
“Bad debate nights happen. Trust me, I know. But this election is still a choice between someone who has fought for ordinary folks his entire life and someone who only cares about himself. Between someone who tells the truth; who knows right from wrong and will give it to the American people straight — and someone who lies through his teeth for his own benefit. Last night didn’t change that, and it’s why so much is at stake in November.”
Obama’s interesting remarks come in the wake of widespread criticism of Biden’s debate showing.
As expected but not to the degree in which it went down, pundits across the political spectrum swiftly pointed out Biden’s struggles, drawing comparisons to Obama’s own underwhelming debate against Republican challenger Mitt Romney in 2012. But this was different. At that time, both Democratic and Republican commentators critiqued Obama’s performance, raising concerns about the Democrats’ chances in the November election.
However, the Democrats’ outlook improved when then-Vice President Joe Biden debated Romney’s running mate, Paul Ryan. Many pundits considered Biden the winner of that debate, which helped stabilize the party’s prospects.
What will help Biden at this point is anyone’s guess but one thing is for certain, something is gotta give or 45 is about to be 47.
