NFL Reveals It’s Plan To Honor John Madden During Week 17

Sad news was revealed on Tuesday night as legendary NFL coach and TV analyst John Madden passed away at the age of 85. For decades, Madden was an incredible broadcaster who brought his energy to the booth. He is also responsible for the Madden video game series, which is easily one of the most successful video game franchises of all time. His loss is a big one for the NFL community, and there is no doubt that he will receive a whole slew of honors over the coming weeks and months.

As for this weekend, the NFL has plans for every single team to pay homage to Madden, in similar fashion. In a memo released to all of the teams, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell is asking home teams to have a moment of silence.

“As you know, the NFL lost a true giant on Tuesday with the passing of John Madden,” Goodell said in a statement to all 32 NFL teams today. “To help honor his legacy, we ask that each home team in Week 17 observe a moment of silence in his memory just prior to the start of the game.”

The moment of silence is common place in the sports world, so this shouldn’t come as a surprise. Hopefully, the NFL is able to come up with something a bit more creative down the line, as Madden is a figure who truly deserves a grand send off.

Eminem Breaks Record For Most Albums With 1 Billion Streams On Spotify

The power of Eminem is undeniable. Despite working as a rapper for over three decades, he’s still going strong and breaking records. Not many have come close to the impact that he has had in music and while some hip-hop fans say that his music has not aged well, others are still shamelessly listening to the Detroit legend on repeat, racking up his streams on platforms like Spotify. According to ChartData, Eminem’s music has been streamed so much that he has broken yet another record at Spotify, officially having the most albums with over one billion streams.

In addition to being named Genius’ fourth-most searched artist of the year, Eminem is also breaking another record at Spotify as it has been revealed that eleven of his albums have reached over one billion streams, which is more than any other artist.

Em did not react to his new record, but he was active today on social media, sharing a link to Horseshoe Gang’s new project Shady Past on Twitter.

Who do you think will end up taking this record from Eminem, and how long do you think he will be the only holder of this title? What do you think about his domination on streaming platforms?

Killer Mike Gives An Update After Barbershop Vandalism

After Killer Mike’s SWAG barbershop was vandalized, the rapper shared a photo of the fixed-up shop. Earlier this week, the Atlanta-based shop was vandalized by conspiracy theorist Druce Wayne. Two days later, the barber shop was laced with some fresh red paint.

“God is good. Me and Shay wanna say Thank U @theswagshopedgewood @symphonythompson @kodakrome3x5 @gabtayouthbuild,” he captioned his most recent IG post.

At the time of the vandalism, Killer Mike showed his frustration but was still able to maintain his composure. “A mentally disturbed White Man who Calls himself ‘Druce Wayne’ did this to our Shop downtown,” Mike wrote. “He lives in the delusion he is Kurt Cobain and somehow i am involved in a conspiracy to keep him silenced. I am angry and beyond upset. With that said I know I can fix this physical damage BUT this man’s mind is terribly broken,” he stated. He continued, “If u are from OKC and know his family or friends please DM so u can get him some help. I will for sure make sure we get this fixed and I encourage all to check on your mentally ill loved ones because the world may not be as understanding as me.”

Beyond the vandalism, Killer Mike has made plans to continue planting roots in his hometown. Earlier this month, he announced that he was teaming up with T.I. to revive popular restaurant, Bankhead Seafood. Originally founded in 1968, the Atlanta staple was forced to close its doors in 2018.

Here Are Some Black-Owned Record Stores That Are Helping Vinyl Have Its Biggest Year In Decades

This year was a huge year for vinyl records, far bigger than anything the industry has seen in the last three decades. Billboard reports that 2.11 million vinyl records were sold between December 17 – 23, the most since MRC Data began tracking music sales in 1991. It also marked the first time that vinyl sales crossed the two million mark in this period. This comes after the Recording Industry Association Of America (RIAA) reported last month that vinyl sales accumulated $467 million in sales by mid-2021. This more than doubles the $207 million in sales that were generated halfway into 2020 while opening the door for a billion-dollar year in the vinyl record industry.

There are plenty of reasons for this jump in vinyl sales, with most having to do with consumers increasing interest in the novelty and vintage item that’s still connected to today’s music. This interest is catered to by record stores all over the country as well as the annual Record Store Day campaign. While big artists like Adele, Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish, Olivia Rodrigo, and more are responsible for a heavy percentage of vinyl sales, the companies that go above and beyond with their consumers also played a large part in this. Stores that seek to do more than sell vinyl, and instead, build themselves as staples in their communities will always have old customers coming back while piquing the interest of new ones.

Plenty of stores across the country do this, but there’s a specific uniqueness and communal aspect that’s present in Black-owned record stores. So here are six Black-owned record stores across the country that helped to give vinyl sales its biggest year in decades.

Moodies Records (Bronx, NY)

The Bronx’s Moodies Records remains a cultural stamp in New York. From its inception in 1982, late founder Earl Moodie provided a limitless collection of vinyl records with a focus on reggae, dancehall, rocksteady, and other Jamaican music. This past fall, Earl Moodie passed away at 69 years old after being sick for a few years. “There was not a sad day to him,” a longtime customer said to Brooklyn News 12 about the late Moodie and his store. “If you went in there sad, he would give you that light. I don’t know how he did it, but he was such an inspirational person.”

Brittany’s Record Shop (Cleveland, OH)

Brittany’s Record Shop will pretty much give a decent selection from multiple genres to pick from. Whether it’s hip-hop, reggae, soul, or jazz, you’ll find it at the Cleveland, OH shop. Their selections get more specific with crates dedicated to Brazilian, Latin, and Afro-funk. However, selling records is just half the job for Brittany Benton. She handpicks every vinyl in the store and helps guide shoppers to new sounds — consider her the Spotify of vinyl records. “When I can make a recommendation that really sticks,” she says in an interview with Cleveland’s Spectrum News, “it definitely validates me, because I know I’m doing the right thing.” Brittany’s Record Shop is temporarily closed at the moment, but a reopening is planned for some point in 2022.

JB’s Record Lounge (Atlanta, GA)

Many of the biggest records in the music world today come from artists based in Atlanta. Whether it’s rappers (Lil Baby), singers (Summer Walker), or pop stars (Lil Nas X), the city has something for you. It’s also the home of JB’s Record Lounge which is far more than you’re typical record store. The company started as a quarterly crate-digging party in owner Jonathan Blanchard’s basement. What began as a collection of 1,000 records quickly grew to 13,000 records leaving all while maintaining the liveliness and community bonding that helped it grow. It also allowed Blanchard to carry a bold claim about his business. “I also will be carrying some of the best vinyl this side of the Mississippi,” he said in a GoFundMe video according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Out Of The Past Collectibles (Austin, TX)

Charlie Joe and Marie Henderson are the proud owners of Austin, TX’s Out Of The Past Collectibles store, and they have been since its opening 35 years ago back in 1986. It boasts a massive collection of jazz, blues, soul, pop, old and new school R&B, and hip-hop vinyl that span the store’s ten rooms, filled with over a million items. Out Of The Past Collectibles isn’t just limited to vinyl though. They also carry antiques, CDs, DVDs, cassette tapes, 8-tracks, and more. Long story short, as their listing on Visit Austin’s website reads, “If we don’t have it, you don’t need it!”

Fivespace (San Diego, CA)

If you happen to live or find yourself on the West Coast and want to get lost in a collection of hip-hop vinyl, San Diego’s Fivespace has just what you’re looking for. Cassettes and select vintage clothing can also be found at the North Park location as the store aims to cater to “consumers interested in vintage design and music products.” During an interview with SD Voyager, owner Sir Frederick promised that a chat with him or the other owners of Fivepsace will result in “a whole new world of styles, artists, and genres to discover that are tailored to your individual tastes.”

Offbeat (Jackson, MS)

In a few years, Phillip Rollins (aka DJ Young Venom) will celebrate the tenth anniversary of his Jackson, MS record store Offbeat. Since its opening in 2014, Offbeat has grown into a home for new and old releases, reissues, and used records that buyers can sift through and choose. A collection of collectibles, pins, apparel, and more can also be found at Offbeat. For Rollins, the store is a visual representation of his goal to “create a space that would have a lasting effect on the state of Mississippi,” and the store’s website reads. Influenced by art from all unconventional aspects of the world, Rollins is doing a great job of highlighting the overlooked corners that his store helps to bring attention to.

Aaron Rodgers Has Interesting Comments About Retirement

During the most recent NFL offseason, Aaron Rodgers toyed with the idea of retiring. It seemed like he was no longer interested in playing for the Green Bay Packers, and if he wasn’t traded, he was just going to walk away. Instead, Rodgers came back to the team and after getting blown out in the first game of the year against the Saints, Rodgers came back with a vengeance and played some of the best football of his career.

Now, the Packers are 12-3 on the season and they are probably going to end up with the bye in the NFC. There is reason to believe this team will end up going to the Super Bowl, and it is an indication that Rodgers still has plenty of gas left in the tank.

Despite all of this, Rodgers still has retirement on his mind. While speaking to reporters, Rodgers said that he has a lot to think about at the end of the season, especially since he wants to go out at the top of his game, instead of turning into a bum.

“I’m just enjoying this season for this season, and playing next year will definitely be in the thought process,” Rodgers explained.

For now, however, Packers fans can continue to enjoy this season for what it is. Hopefully for them, it will end with a Super Bowl title.

Kenneth Petty Gets Extra Month Before Sex Offender Sentencing

Nicki Minaj’s husband, Kenneth Petty, has gotten an extension with regard to his latest federal sex offender case. Back in March, Petty was arrested for failure to register as a sex offender after it was determined that he had not registered in the state of California. During a virtual hearing in September, he pleaded guilty and was expected to face up to 10 years in prison and a lifetime of supervised release. His sentencing was scheduled for January 4th, 2022.

During a recent negotiation, a judge granted Petty an extension to allow him to spend time with his family on Valentine’s Day. His sentencing has now been pushed back to March 30th, 2021. Court documents reveal that he pleaded not guilty, but the prosecution will still seek a lighter sentence. His team is currently pushing for no time served behind bars and will use the additional two months to submit an “expert report” to support their request.

Petty’s case stems from the rape of Jennifer Hough on September 16th, 1994. At the time, Hough was 16 when Petty took her to a house around the corner from her bus stop and raped her at knifepoint. Hough reported the rape to security guards at John Adams High School. Petty was convicted of one count of attempted rape in the first degree, assault in the second degree, unlawful imprisonment in the second degree, and criminal possession of a weapon. He was sentenced to four years in prison.

Both Nicki Minaj and Kenneth Petty have been under fire for their alleged harassment of Hough. Earlier this year, Hough announced that she was suing the couple for emotional distress, sexual assault, sexual harassment, emotional distress, and witness intimidation.

Kanye West Tearing Down House He Bought Across Street From Kim Kardashian: Report

After photos surfaced of the home that Kanye West recently purchased in Hidden Hills, which is located directly across the street from Kim Kardashian’s home, fans are not surprised to hear that Ye is tearing down the home and building a new one on the same lot.

Kanye reportedly paid $4.5 million for the home, which was $421,000 over the asking price. Sources say that he wanted quicker access to his kids, who live in the crib across the street. Considering the home doesn’t really exactly match Ye’s minimalistic architecture style, it doesn’t come as a surprise to hear that this is a teardown project.

Brad Barket/Getty Images

“Kanye’s new house is a teardown. He only bought it for the location,” said a source to People Magazine. “It’s near Kim and the kids. He has a vision for the house and plans on starting construction ASAP. It’s just simple logistics so that he is close to his children and has access to them at the drop of a hat.”

The 44-year-old recording artist recently also purchased a home in Malibu, thirty minutes away, for $57.3 million. The house is much more his style, with stone exteriors and bunker-like construction.

The new home in the Hidden Hills was originally purchased by the previous owners in 1955 when it was fresh on the market. The 3,600-square-foot house sits on over an acre of land, so there’s no telling how large Ye could build his new mansion.

This also comes after Ye listed one of his Wyoming ranches on the market for $11 million.

Adam McKay Gushes Over Ariana Grande And Kid Cudi’s Acting Performances In ‘Don’t Look Up’

Ariana Grande and Kid Cudi’s involvement with Don’t Look Up doesn’t stop at their song “Just Look Up,” as they also have substantial parts in the film. Furthermore, Adam McKay has heaped praise on the two for their performances in the movie.

McKay said of Grande, “It made sense to have the biggest pop star in the world play the biggest pop star in the world. We got her on set for her first scene with [Leonardo DiCaprio] and [Jennifer Lawrence], and she’s improvising lines. I knew she’d nail the song, but I didn’t know she could improvise.”

He spoke more about Grande’s improvisational skills in a recent video from Netflix about the movie’s improv, starting at 4:19 into the video.

Grande also offered a quote about McKay, saying, “Adam’s one of my comedy heroes. I was jumping out of my skin when he pitched me the idea of playing this pop star in this yucky tabloid frenzy. Playing this little part and getting to work with Adam and this beyond incredible cast was such a special experience.”

McKay also had compliments for Cudi, saying, “[I] knew who Kid Cudi was, but in meeting Scott Mescudi, I was completely taken aback. He can really act. He was immediately natural on set and such a humble guy. Scott was incredibly open and collaborative.”

Of course, it makes sense that both Cudi and Grande would be comfortable on a set, as they’ve both spent plenty of time in that environment. Before music, Grande was known for playing the character Cat Valentine in two Nickelodeon series, Victorious and Sam & Cat. As for Cudi, he been in the main cast of shows like How To Make It In America, Comedy Bang! Bang!, and We Are Who We Are.
