Will Smith Has Avoided Slave Films But Shares Difference Between “Emancipation” & “Django”

Throughout the history of the film industry, films centered around American slavery have often caused debates. Some critics believe that we have enough films about the enslaved struggle, while others don’t think that those movies tell the truth about the actual horrors that existed. Whatever conversations may arise, tens of millions of movie fans storm theaters when a slavery feature is released, and for the better of Will Smith’s career, he has avoided acting in them.

At the moment, the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air icon is filming Emancipation where he portrays a runaway slave named Peter who flees a cruel Lousiana plantation only to return to help liberate others.

“I’ve always avoided making films about slavery,” Smith revealed to GQ. “In the early part of my career… I didn’t want to show Black people in that light. I wanted to be a superhero. So I wanted to depict Black excellence alongside my white counterparts. I wanted to play roles that you would give to Tom Cruise. And the first time I considered it was Django [Unchained]. But I didn’t want to make a slavery film about vengeance.”

Tarantino’s “Django” was portrayed by Jamie Foxx who’s incredible performance in the film is arguably one of his best. Although there was a romance storyline tied into Django’s revenge, Smith shared what separates Emancipation and Tarantino’s award-winning film.

“This was one that was about love and the power of Black love,” Smith said. “And that was something that I could rock with. We were going to make a story about how Black love makes us invincible.”

Nick Cannon Pranks Kevin Hart, Puts His Photo On His Friend’s Private Jet

We’ve heard of pranks, but Nick Cannon has taken things to another level. Cannon and his good friend Kevin Hart have often surfaced online trolling one another, but it looks as if the former has bested the latter. Last week, Hart revealed that he had a billboard erected in Los Angeles that posted Cannon’s phone number, but to up the ante, Cannon has taken over Hart’s private jet.

Cannon decided to reveal his prank on social media, showing that the plane now features a humongous photo of himself in an effort to promote his new series, The Nick Cannon Show.

“Snuck into @kevinhart4real private hanger over the weekend and personally wrapped his Leer Jet with my whole Face!” wrote Cannon in the caption. “So now everywhere he flys he will be promoting my New Show!!! Gotcha Back Byaaaach!!! [sideways laughing emojis][middle finger emojis]#PrankWars #WeDontStop #NickCannonShow ‘Kevin Rides The Cannon!!![sideways crying laughing emojis].'”

Boosie Badazz Asks Drake To Help Promote Movie: “Tell Canada F*ck With My Biopic”

The Hip Hop arena has another biopic in its midst after Boosie Badazz released his film, My Struggle. The feature is obviously largely based on Boosie’s experiences and he portrays himself in the film at various stages of his life, and recently, Boosie hosted a premiere event. As fans are celebrating the proclaimed “hood film,” Boosie is hoping that more people watch the movie, so he is calling on Drake to help promote it in Canada.

Boosie is never shy to ask the general public for help when he’s caught in a bind and he reached out to Drake, sort of, with the hopes that the OVO Sound icon would do him a solid.

“Aye Drake, I need you to tell Canada f*ck with my biopic,” Boosie said in a video. “Go f*ck with my film. Go on tell the Six go f*ck with my film. Know you go power. Help me out, n*gga.”

Drake has yet to respond to Boosie’s request, but he did surface to wish Lil Wayne a happy birthday. We know that Drizzy’s reach is global and he has a firm hand on Toronto, so hopefully, for Boosie’s sake, Drake can get the entirety of the second largest country on the planet to support Boosie’s film.

Check out Boosie’s plea below.

Lil Wayne Receives Birthday Post From Denise Bidot: “The Greatest Love Of My Life”

They’ve often fawned over one another on social media, so it does not come as a surprise that Denise Bidot highlighted Lil Wayne for his birthday. The acclaimed rapper is celebrating his birthday in style today (September 27) as he turned 39, and tens of thousands of well wishes have been shared on social media. The Rap icon has always remained relatively private about his romantic relationships, but fans are seeing much more from Wayne’s lovey-dovey side while he has been with Denise.

The pair have had some rough patches and reportedly broke up for a time, but things seem to be back on track as they once again appeared happily in love in the model’s Instagram photos.

“Happy birthday to my favorite human on this or any planet,” wrote Bidot in the caption. “You’ve been my teacher, friend and the greatest love of my life. Cheers to you @liltunechi . You truly are the goat. [birthday emoji][black heart emoji][goat emoji] (ps- these are old pics but his smile here [heart eyes emoji]).”

In Denise’s photos, she and Wayne are standing in front of near-lifesize letters of the initials to their first names. Check out Denise’s birthday post to her beau below.

Dez Bryant Sparks Debate After Calling Out Colin Kaepernick’s Activism

Activists and fans are coming forward to defend Colin Kaepernick following Dez Bryant’s recent remarks. The Dallas Cowboys wide receiver appeared on the I Am Athlete podcast where, among the discussion, Bryant called out Kaepernick for not making good on his activism. Kaepernick was blackballed from the NFL following his “Take a Knee” campaign, and while the controversy helped raise awareness about injustice, Bryant was critical that Kaepernick could have done more.

“I respect Colin Kaepernick, but it’s one thing that I don’t respect,” said Bryant. “And I said when I get the opportunity to get on the stage and say it, I would say it.”

“Love him to death, so it ain’t no hate or nothin’ like that, but brother, you had the biggest opportunity in the world to create jobs, build jobs, give jobs to people,” he continued. “The people that you were talking about, the people that you, so-called, standing up for. People that stood beside you, the people who lost they jobs because of you. Where you at? I ain’t heard from you.”

“He brought the awareness and that’s why I respect him.” Someone asked what the call to action was. “There wasn’t one. There was no call to action.” The public reacted with mixed responses, but Jemele Hill jumped in to set Bryant straight.

“With all due respect @DezBryant, this is uninformed. Colin Kaepernick has created a publishing company, a SPAC that’s raising $300M for social justice initiatives, a production company, etc. On top of founding the Know Your Rights Camp. I don’t get the point of dragging his name.”

Chlöe’s ‘Have Mercy’ Got An Epic Cover By A Historical Black College Marching Band

Chlöe has been having a wonderful 2021. Following the success of her collaborative album with her sister, Ungodly Hour, last year, she’s also found her own voice this year and recently released her debut single, “Have Mercy.” The song was hotly anticipated, and her VMA performance of the new track even sparked reactions from rappers like Gunna showing their appreciation for her finesse.

Well, rappers aren’t the only ones who can see themselves in the song’s bombastic braggadocio, and with its unpredictable rhythms it was probably only a matter of time until a swaggering marching band set the tune to orchestral mode and turned up the brass. Enter the Marching Storm from Prairie View A&M University, the marching band for this historical black college. Captured by a Chlöe stan account, who posted a clip of the band’s rendition to Twitter, the song is accompanied by a performance from the school’s dance team that is clearly inspired by Chlöe’s own moves.

Check it out below:

For her part, Chlöe saw the cover and was ecstatic about their version. “GO OFFFFFF” she wrote in all caps while sharing the original tweet to her own followers:

If someone could make a studio version of the orchestra take, though, I’d seriously listen to it quite a bit.

Jayda Cheaves & Entourage Arrested In Jamaica For Gun Possession: Report

This is a developing story, but it has been reported that Jayda Cheaves has been arrested. Jayda was already a businesswoman when she and Lil Baby first began flaunting their relationship, but her social media influencer status reached new heights when partnered with the rapper’s popularity. She often appears online promoting her brands and flexing her luxury lifestyle, but reports stated today (September 27) that Jayda was detained in the popular vacation destination.

According to Dancehall Mag, Jayda was on vacation in Jamaica to celebrate her 24th birthday. While making her way back to the States today, the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) arrested Cheaves along with others in her team.

Social media followers have been keeping track of Jayda’s Jamaican escapades as she posted about them. She reportedly snagged herself a private jet but when she was making her way home, authorities uncovered two firearms, specifically, 9mm pistols. Urban Islandz reports that the guns were licensed in America and went undetected because the group was not searched upon their arrival to Jamaica.

“We ascertain that the two weapons were license and registered in the US, but not in Jamaica which is where the problem arise,” authorities reportedly stated. Urban Islandz added, “The police confirmed that Jayda and her friends are being interviewed by the St James police in the presence of their attorneys.”

No statements have been made thus far from Lil Baby or Jayda Cheaves.

R. Kelly Makes Statement After Guilty Verdict, Fans Protest Outside Courthouse

His defense attempted to sway the jury in their favor during closing arguments by comparing R. Kelly to the likes of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Mike Pence, but the conclusion of the singer’s sex trafficking trial did not end as they’d hoped. On Monday (September 27), Kelly began his week by learning that he was found guilty of over a dozen counts relating to sex crimes, bribery, trafficking, and soon, he will learn his fate at sentencing.

After learning of the verdict, Kelly’s attorney Deveraux Cannick came forward and spoke with reporters outside of the courthouse. “Of course Mr. Kelly is disappointed,” he said.

“He was not anticipating this verdict because based on the evidence, why should he anticipate this verdict?” Cannick continued. “You saw witness after witness giving three, four, five different versions as to what they said happened here.”

“You didn’t get to see what we saw in terms of the discovery. You didn’t get to see all the inconsistencies,” he said. “We said in our summation that the government cherry-picked their version that they thought would support the continuation of the narrative.”

“Why would he expect this verdict given all the inconsistencies that we saw?” Kelly reportedly faces 10 years to life. His fans held a protest outside of the courthouse and others have taken to social media to express their discontent with the verdict. Kelly shared a post to social media maintaining his innocence and stating that he will continue to “fight for my freedom.”

Summer Walker Reposts Fan Calling Her The “Queen Of R&B Of This Generation”

Last month, Jemele Hill stirred up a discussion about “Top 5s” after she spoke about two legends who have reigned for decades. Tupac Shakur and Christopher “The Notorious B.I.G.” Wallace have been staples on top rappers lists since their deaths in the mid-1990s, but as a new generation of artists have entered GOAT chats, new names are being added with each year.

Hill suggested that eventually, Pac and Biggie will be edged out of Top 10s because that is how things go as time advances, but it isn’t just Rap that hosts these discussions. Conversations about the greatest R&B singers are also up for debate, and Summer Walker seemingly entered the chat.

We’ve heard the likes of Jacquees repeatedly declaring that he is the King of R&B, and while that kicked up dust when his remarks went viral, a recent post by Summer has done the same. Over on her Instagram Story, the singer reshared a post from someone who believed she deserves the queen title.

“Idc what y’all say @summerwalker is the QUEEN OF R&B of this generation,” the person wrote. “Don’t @ me argue with yo mama.” This has sparked a debate online as people weigh in. Walker’s fans agree with the sentiment while others suggest Jazmine Sullivan or Kehlani deserve the title. Check it all out below.
