Snoop Dogg Reflects On Working With Pharrell On “Drop It Like It’s Hot”

Audible has recently released, From the Streets, to the Suites, Snoop Dogg’s installment of their Words + Music series. The audiobook features Snoop detailing notable moments from his life and career. In it, the rapper opened up about what it was like to work alongside Pharrell Williams on the 2004 track, “Drop It Like It’s Hot.”

“[Pharrell’s] in the back with the keyboards, it’s just him and the engineer,” he revealed. “He ain’t even got the beat all the way made. This how this n***a get down, he don’t say words, he just [imitates Pharrell], so it’s my job to make that sh*t make sense!” Upon hearing Pharrell’s verse on the song, he said, “This n***a done took the bar all the way … I cannot let Pharrell out-rap me on my muthaf*ckin’ song!”

In the audiobook, Snoop also revealed how he felt upon losing a Grammy award for his song “Gin and Juice.” He was nominated for Best Rap Solo Performance at the 1995 ceremony, and says he was “hurt” when he lost to Queen Latifah. He revealed, “Queen Latifah approached me about that song,” adding, “Me and her was nominated for a Grammy for [‘Gin and Juice’] against ‘U.N.I.T.Y..’ She won and I was hurt, but she was like, ‘N***a, I love ‘Gin and Juice.’ That’s my favorite sh*t.’ So then I got unhurt fast.”

He went on to explain, “You know a motherf*cker get hurt ’cause he lose and sh*t. But I’m like, d*mn this is the Queen, n***a. Bow down. This is the muthaf*ckin’ queen, and she told me that. She said: ‘But, I love ‘Gin and Juice,’ that’s my favorite sh*t.’ So I was like you know what? I can take that L.” As of late, Snoop has been collaborating with Dr. Dre. They’re working on their upcoming album, Missionary, in celebration of the 30-year anniversary of Doggystyle. According to Snoop Dogg, the record is “coming soon.”
