Colman Domingo is buzzing in Hollywood after being nominated for the highest award as an actor for his Oscar-worthy performance in the civil rights drama Rustin. Now he’s setting his sights on another big role-playing the controversial patriarch Joe Jackson in the highly anticipated Michael Jackson biopic.
The Antoine Fuqua-directed feature jump-starts production this week. Domingo has been turning heads as of late and joins Jaafar, Michael Jackson’s nephew, who will play his late uncle on the big screen. Juliano Krue Valdi will play a younger MJ. Domingo is the newest major cast announcement but easily the biggest name thus far.
Here’s the official description from Lionsgate:
The film is being produced by Graham King (Bohemian Rhapsody), alongside John Branca and John McClain, co-executors of the Michael Jackson estate. Expect Michael to hit theaters on April 18, 2025.
King said “I’m so honored to tell Michael’s story. It’s been a long journey and I’m excited for the film to show audiences around the world a perspective of Michael that they’ve never seen,”
“Michael Jackson was inarguably one of the greatest entertainers of all time,” was the quote from Adam Fogelson, Chair of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group. “His impact on music, video, art, fashion, culture – and so much more – was extraordinary and is still profoundly relevant. I can’t wait for audiences to be able to see this film in theaters worldwide next year.”
