When Kim Kardashian hosted “SNL” last year, she was careful not to offend Kanye West.
During Thursday’s episode of “The Kardashians,” Kim documented the preparations for her “SNL” hosting gig. She revealed that most of her family was game to be joked about during the show, but one joke about her ex-husband was left on the cutting room floor.
The nixed joke was supposed to be featured in “The People’s Kourt” sketch. “SNL” cast member Chris Redd was to play Ye asking for Kim to be his lawyer in their divorce.
However, Kim worried that the joke was insensitive to West, especially since she was already set to make a joke about their split during her opening monologue.
“The divorce is so sensitive for him,” Kim said, according to PEOPLE. “I’m already saying that part in the monologue, I don’t want to like… maybe I could talk to Chris and think of something funny. I could just tell him, ‘Hey! This is super sensitive to him.’”
Kim admitted that she was “afraid of hurting people’s feelings.” “It doesn’t mean that because we didn’t work out that we don’t have a great love and respect for each other,” she said of West, who she divorced after nearly seven years of marriage.
During the monologue, Kim made a joke about their divorce. “I’ve been very blessed in this life, and I’m grateful for everything, honestly, all the ups, all the downs,” she said. “I mean, I married the best rapper of all time. Not only that, he’s the richest Black man in America, a talented, legit genius, who gave me four incredible kids.”
She continued, “So when I divorced him, you have to know it came down to just one thing: his personality. I know it sounds mean, but people keep telling me that comedy comes from truth. And if there’s one thing that I always strive to be, it’s genuine.”
West previously revealed that he was upset when Kim kissed Pete Davidson, who she started dating after “SNL,” during an Aladdin-themed skit.
“People intentionally do things to be mean and hurt you and to be playing games, and then culturally it’s OK,” Ye told Hollywood Unlocked. “How you gonna bring me to ‘SNL’ and kiss the dude you dating right in front of me? And everybody’s like, ‘Oh, that’s cool.’”
