Amazon Games CEO Claims Video Games Don’t Have Acting, Enrages Striking Video Game Actors

Increasingly, AI has created tension between corporations seeking to streamline product development and trim costs and creatives seeking protections against having their contributions entirely replaced.  In July, this came to a head in the video game industry, where members of the Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) who perform in video games went on strike for protection against AI encroachment.  Against this background, Christoph Hartmann, CEO of Amazon Games, caused significant controversy last week when he stated that “[in] games, we don’t really have acting” and advocated adding AI to game development.

In an interview with IGN, a popular video game news source, Hartmann stated that he hoped that AI could lessen the lengthy development times of games because it currently takes “five years per game,” and commented further that “hopefully AI will help us to streamline processes so hand-done work will go fast.  Ideally we can get it down to three years.”  When asked about the SAG-AFTRA strike, Hartmann responded that “especially for games, we don’t really have acting . . . [t]he majority of the team sits in programming and that’s not going to go away because that’s all about innovation.”  He received heavy criticism over these comments, with people pointing to games like Baldur’s Gate 3, The Last of Us, and Cyberpunk 2077, which are extremely popular games largely because the character acting elevates them into a unique and special experience.

In response to this criticism, an Amazon spokesperson addressed the “confusion” caused by Hartmann’s comments and explained that they were intended to reference internal development teams, and that Amazon Games typically does not have actors on staff.  Amazon stated, “[a]s with any tool, we believe generative AI needs to be used responsibly and we’re carefully exploring how we can use it to help solve the technical challenges development teams face.”   Reading Hartmann’s remarks in context, these “explorations” appear to include the localization of game dialogue in different countries.  Hartmann remarked that “what could be super helpful is localization. We’re currently localizing our game into a certain set of languages. Does it commercially make sense to have it in a language, yes or no? Having AI actually will help us.”  It should be noted that using AI to directly localize voice acting by using an AI copy of an actor’s voice to generate new dialogue in a new language would likely be a violation of the AI protections that SAG-AFTRA members are currently seeking, if the actor has not granted approval or been compensated.

Sarah Elmaleh, the SAG-AFTRA Interactive Media Agreement negotiating committee chair, stated in response to Hartmann’s remarks, stating that  “[w]hether game design, localization, programming, acting, anything – these highly specialized and professionalized workers are the ones who understand whether and how AI might be assistive or detrimental in their work. And workers should have the right and the means to advocate for the proper use of this tool.”

As game developers explore new ways to use generative AI, the livelihood of artists, actors, and other creatives remains at risk until the parties can have a productive dialogue.  Negotiation of the SAG-AFTRA Interactive Media Agreement provides a framework to do this. However, Hartmann’s recent remarks and the reaction to them suggest that this dialogue is still a work in progress.

NBA 2K25 Unveils Revamped City for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC

NBA 2K25 Unveils Revamped City for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC

Today, 2K revealed major updates for NBA 2K25’s The City, available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and making its debut on PC. The redesigned City, driven by player feedback, offers a more connected and interactive experience, including a vibrant Boulevard of Stars and the return of MyCOURT and iconic MyPARKS.

The revamped City is designed to feel more intimate, with basketball at its core. It features a condensed map that eliminates empty spaces, making every building purposeful and dynamic. Centrally located is the Boulevard of Stars, an upscale street that provides easy access to all game modes and experiences, such as refreshed Pro-AM, The REC, and Ante-Up. This street also boasts a Walk of Fame, which showcases past NBA championship teams while leaving room for players to memorialize their own MyCAREER dynasties alongside NBA history.

“The City for NBA 2K25 has been redesigned with community feedback at the forefront,” said Erick Boenisch, VP of NBA Development at Visual Concepts. “We’ve built a completely new City that is significantly more intimate and accessible, brought back nostalgic fan-favorite experiences, and created new ways to compete for all skill levels. The City in NBA 2K25 provides a greater focus on basketball and a quicker entry into the experience allowing players to seamlessly connect and compete.”

Answering the community’s call, NBA 2K25 brings back the beloved MyCOURT feature. This combination of an apartment and basketball court serves as a player’s private hub to practice and experiment on the court. Players can hone their skills solo or invite friends and MyCAREER teammates for games like 1v1, 3v3, and HORSE. MyCOURT also offers customization options, allowing players to personalize their space with new wall mural art earned through Quests and Season rewards.

Proving Grounds is introduced as the new competitive hub within The City, featuring a colosseum-inspired arena designed for intense ranked play across 1v1, 2v2, 3v3, or 5v5 games. The arena employs comp-level difficulty settings and removes Shot Meters, aiming to highlight the best NBA 2K25 players with daily leaderboards. The top five players each season will receive exclusive rewards, while all competitors can tier up and earn the highest REP in The City.

Affiliations make a strong return with brand-new parks for RISE and ELITE, continuing their rivalry. ELITE players will find themselves in a pirate-themed park featuring a playable ship, while RISE offers a futuristic robot manufacturing factory. Parks within each affiliation have been redesigned to place courts closer together, ensuring players can engage in action quickly. NBA 2K25 also celebrates a decade since NBA 2K15 by remastering all four iconic MyPARKs, including Sunset Beach, Rivet City, Old Town, and the aircraft carrier-based Old Town MyPARK, integrating new-gen technology and lighting.

Streetball also returns, offering over-the-top rewards and introducing co-op mode, where players can join forces in 3v3 games to complete Streetball Quests together. To accommodate newcomers, NBA 2K25 introduces several features to make The City more accessible. HoloHelp Info kiosks outside each game mode provide breakdowns and skill level recommendations, while beginner-friendly Casual Courts in the ELITE and RISE parks allow players to learn the game in a more relaxed setting.

With these updates, NBA 2K25 promises a richer and more immersive basketball experience, inviting both new and veteran players to explore the newly revamped City.

Turkey Bans Roblox, Claims Popular Online Game Exploits Children and Shows Them Explicit Content

Turkey Bans Roblox, Claims Popular Online Game Exploits Children and Shows Them Explicit Content

By: Zachary Abbott

Increasingly, governments across the globe have focused their attention on online services that do not take sufficient precautions to protect children from harmful content.  These efforts have been aimed at social media services like Instagram and TikTok, and have been most recently aimed at online games.  One country has taken the extraordinary step of banning these services entirely.

On August 7th, the Turkish government’s Information and Communication Technologies Authority (BTK), announced that it was banning the game Roblox.  Roblox is free to play and massively popular, particularly with children and teens, with over 500 million downloads.  Roughly 40% of Roblox’s estimated 77 million daily players are under age 13.  Roblox is played entirely online and provides users with access to the Roblox Studio, where they can create their own games or play games that have been designed by other users.  Roblox consists of over 40 million user-designed games.  Many of these games offer in-game purchases using Roblox’s in-game currency, “Robux,” which can be purchased with real money outside the game.  Many of the individual games allow direct player-to-player interaction through in-game messaging, and there is an optional live voice messaging function.

The Turkish government stated in its official announcement on X (formerly Twitter) that it was banning Roblox based on prevalent reports of sexual exploitation, pedophilia, exploitation of children, and lack of content oversight.  The claims of child exploitation arise from Roblox’s model where children create content for Roblox without pay, or for “Robux,” while the company keeps the profits.

Similar accusations against Roblox have been made in the past.  Bloomberg reported recently that Roblox had reported over 13,000 in-game incidents to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, and that 24 predators have been arrested for grooming and abuse through the game.   A group of U.S. parents have filed a lawsuit against Roblox claiming inadequate safety precautions and exposure of children to explicit content.

Although Turkey has now lifted its recent Instagram ban, there has been no news about lifting the ban on Roblox. Roblox has explained that they are working with local authorities to lift the ban, and that they wish to help all of their players and developers (many of which have careers based around the app) to get back online, and back to playing.  Currently, there has not been much political interest in banning or restricting Roblox in the U.S., but this could change as further accusations come to light.

NBA 2K25 Introduces Major Innovations to MyNBA and MyGM

NBA 2K25 MyNBA Header

2K today unveiled exciting new features coming to MyNBA and MyGM in NBA 2K25 for PlayStation®5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Fans can look forward to the addition of the Steph Era in MyNBA, where they can relive or rewrite the championship-studded legacy of Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors. For the first time, MyGM will be available on new-generation consoles, allowing players to step into the role of an NBA General Manager and create the foundation of a dynasty.

The Full NBA General Manager Experience in MyGM arrives on new-generation consoles with a dynamic role-playing franchise experience. Players start by choosing their own GM backstory, such as an Ex-Player, Previous Scout, Savant of Finance, or Closer. Each backstory determines initial attributes and playstyles for running a franchise, adding depth and variety to the management role.

Dynamic Conversations & Goals are a core part of MyGM. The game introduces dynamic conversations, allowing highly customizable interactions with staff and players to manage needs and execute goals. These interactions significantly affect the team’s trajectory and outcomes, with backstory and attribute ratings influencing dialogue choices and unlocking more paths to satisfy a player’s goals.

The MyGM Building is a new addition where players can engage in in-person conversations with staff members or the Governor, providing a more authentic feel to the GM role. This free-roaming space allows players to take control of their MyGM and carry out responsibilities as the brains of the team.

NBA 2K25 also introduces a new Perk System, with 55 perks available at launch. These perks, such as Winning Culture or Data Analyst, boost specific GM skills and enhance gameplay both on and off the court, offering players additional strategies and advantages in managing their team.

The Steph Era in MyNBA allows players to start their league in 2016, immersing themselves in the legendary run of Stephen Curry and the Warriors alongside Klay Thompson, Draymond Green, and Kevin Durant. This new era lets players relive or challenge one of the greatest dynasties in professional basketball history.

The Emirates NBA Cup now features more integrations in MyNBA, with competitive group stage play and single-elimination knockout rounds testing team depth and resilience. This addition brings a new level of competition and excitement to the game.

League Expansions and Contractions give players full control over league size adjustments. This feature allows for recreating the expansion boom of the 80s and 90s or modifying the league size in the Modern Era, offering extensive customization options for shaping the MyNBA experience.
