PlayThatBoiZay’s New Album “VIP” Is Pure Delirium

PlayThatBoiZay, outside of some spot features and loose singles, has been quite inactive. However, there is a gut-wrenching/valid reason as to why that’s been the case. According to Clash Music, the Florida product nearly lost his life in 2021 due to a car accident in 2021. It was so serious that he was “unable to walk and in a state of amnesia for months”. It wouldn’t be until about June 2022 that PlayThatBoiZay would be able to return to his “normal” life. He was an opener for fellow Loma Vista Recordings label mate Denzel Curry when he was touring Melt My Eyez See Your Future. Also during that slow reintegration period, PlayThatBoiZay would go back to work on the album that now sits in front of us this weekend, VIP.

Knowing that, it’s clear that he’s been through a lot just to get to this point, physically and mentally. It’s why Zay wrote on IG recently, “I been through so much and I’ve never let my problems define me. I always put myself first. That’s what ‘VIP’ is about. It’s the acknowledgement that your existence is important and putting yourself first without anyone’s approval”. That valid “selfishness” is very prevalent all over the trim 14-track, 32-minute offering both in the performance and instrumental department. The mix of industrial, trap metal, rage, and touch of horrorcore are something that he’s been doing for years now.

There are going to be some who say that he’s ripping off JPEGMAFIA and Denzel Curry to some extent. We would argue he’s utilizing his mentors’ advice to make something that is still his own. It sort of plays Mischievous South but somehow even dirtier and more aggressive. Like Zay said, “I’ve never let my problems define me”. While he was dealing with a lot, he used all of this time to push through, which allowed him to create his best work yet.

Denzel Curry And ASAP Rocky Team Up For The First Time On ‘Hoodlumz’ With PlayThatBoiZay

Denzel Curry’s new album King Of The Mischievous South Vol. 2 is out in just a few more days, and he’s keeping the hype train running with the punishing new single “Hoodlumz,” featuring PlayThatBoiZay and ASAP Rocky. UK producer Kwes Darko provides a suitably menacing and the three MCs reciprocate with some Killer Instinct Ultra combo flows, throwing punchy rhymes almost as fast as the listener can catch them.

Rocky’s appearance is notable, given the history between him and his host’s respective rap crews back in the early blog era from which both emerged. Rocky, a member of the New York-based ASAP Mob, and Denzel, who claimed the more diffuse but ostensibly Florida-oriented Raider Klan, would have been, if not outright enemies, then at least less than cordial back then.

Both groups were heavily influenced by both the Memphis trap sound and the Houston chopped-and-screwed sound, but neither wanted to share digital space with the other. Consider it a 2010s version of the “South Bronx” battle between MC Shan and Juice Crew vs. KRS-One and Boogie Down Productions over hip-hop’s original birthplace. Apparently, whatever issue Zel and Rocky had before has since been cleared up — although it should be noted, neither is really all that tight with their old crews anymore either.

“Hoodlumz” is the third single from King Of The Mischievous South Vol. 2, following “Hot One” with TiaCorine and the former ASAP Ferg and “Black Flag Freestyle” with That Mexican OT.

Denzel Curry Announces A Fall US Tour And Delivers A Can’t-Miss ‘LA Leakers’ Freestyle

Earlier today, Kid Cudi announced that Denzel Curry would be supporting him for seven of the shows on his To The Moon World Tour. And while that’s a good look for Curry, it’s also a major flex for the rapper as he just announced his own headlining tour at the same time.

Curry — who recently called himself “the best rapper alive” — will be supporting his album, Melt My Eyez See Your Future, which came out in March and is one of Uproxx’s Best Hip-Hop Albums of 2022 so far. Meanwhile, Curry popped into Power 106 this week to drop an LA Leakers freestyle over Lil Durk’s “Ahhh Ha” & Jeezy’s “I’m Just Sayin.” “I murder everything that I’m touchin’, you feel me,” he said before shifting from one beat to the other. It’s a can’t miss flow.

Check out Denzel Curry’s tour dates below. An artist pre-sale begins on Wednesday, June 22 at 10 am local time running until Thursday, June 23 at 10 pm local time. The public sale begins on Friday, June 24 at 10 am local time here.
